HALL COUNTY QUILT GUILD
The President’s Corner
Hello everyone,
I would like to say" Thank you " again to Lisa Reichenberg and her committee for a
wonderful picnic. Plus big "Thank you" to all that attended and brought such wonderful
dishes to share.
We had an absolutely beautiful day for our annual Eagle Ranch picnic!! At the picnic, I
made a suggestion that we could possibly start a "Wool Group" using the free pattern
available on Lisa Bongean's blog. She is the designer/owner of Primitive Gatherings.
She is currently celebrating her 10th year as a quilt store owner/designer and is making
available a free pattern which I believe she is making available every 2 weeks or there
about on her blog.
There has been interest discussed previously about a wool group but not sure what
pattern to use. What a great way to get started. So this is what I purpose, if you have an
interest, please reply to me using this email and also suggest a day that works for you.
Such as "the third Wednesday of the month". etc. (you get the idea). Now, as my
disclaimer, If you could reply by Friday this week, I will do my best to see what works for
the majority that is interested. Also, for the first meeting, we can meet at my house and
then discuss future locations.
Also, for those who have never worked with wool and are interested in learning. this is a
good way to see if you like the technique. The best part about getting together as a
group is that each of us has something to teach and share.
I would like to point out how remarkable our guild is. When I joined in
September 2009 and given the new member information, the membership was
around 30 give or take. Currently, we have 92 members on our roster! How
impressive!!
We have so many opportunities for members to be involved in the guild. Just
to name a few, you can participate in making Eagle Ranch quilts, Quilts 4
Kids, Wheelchair Lap Cozies, Project Day, Fat Quarter Swap, Retreats, Bees,
and Lost Socks! I'm sure there are some I am forgetting but as you can see,
there is much to do.
Have a safe 4th of July and see all of you at our meeting on July 7th.

In-House “Yard Sale” Coming February 2015
We are planning an In-House “Yard Sale” at our February 2015
guild meeting. Start collecting, organizing and pricing your once
loved quilting, sewing and handwork supplies for the sale.
To sell the above named type items:
1.Be a guild member.
2.Reserve a table or tables in fellowship hall at $5.00 per table at
any guild meeting prior to the February sale and guild meeting.
Mary Ann Cox and Mary Colley will accept money for the table(s)
you want to reserve and give you a receipt.
3.Bring plenty of small bills and change to buy items from others
and to aid in your sale transactions.
If you don’t want to sell items but have items you wish to part with,
please donate them to the Guild Table. All proceeds from this table
will be given to the guild treasury.
Suggestion Box
Just a reminder that there is a suggestion box for your thoughts and ideas. If
there is something you see that can be done better, let us know. If there is a
problem, let us know. Also, if there is a speaker or workshop you know
would be fun and interesting, let us know. You get the picture, Let us know! I
do ask one thing, this is a SUGGESTION Box not a COMPLAINT Box. With
that being said, I do want to hear complaints but only in person not behind
the scenes.
Thanks so much for your input!

Lap Cozy Challenge
Purpose: to provide a safe quilt for wheel chair bound
patients.
Place: Bell Minor Home
2200 Old Hamilton Place, NE Gainesville
Timing: To be delivered after our December meeting.
Judging will be at our November meeting.
The Challenge: Use 5 inch squares to create a unique
cozy.
36 squares will complete the 28" by 28" main part with a trapezoid
bottom measuring 28" by 13" by 10" by 13" (patterns available or select
a precut piece) Backing is at least 38" long by 30" wide (select from
precut pieces). Use your own batting (a great way to use up odd pieced
together batting). You can finish by turning the backing to make a
binding, add your own binding or pillowcase backing to top and batting.
Of course, you are free to use your own fabrics, but it will be fun to
share 5" squares.
We will work on cutting and preparing cozies at work days. We will add
labels identifying the cozies from Hall County Quilt Guild. Also add a
paper label with your name on it for judging.
Needed: lots of 5" squares, quilters to create 80 lap cozies. (That's
about one apiece for all our members.) Prizes to be announced in June.

Fall Festival at the Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum
We are very excited to announce our upcoming Fall Festival featuring guest speaker Marti
Michell! The festival will include the grand opening of the Marti Michell Exhibit, several classes
led by Marti and two lectures.
THURSDAY
October 2, 2014
Half day class:
Seven Sisters Simplified - No Set-in Seams! The traditional Seven Sisters is a well-loved, but
seldom made, quilt pattern. That should change with this simplified version which has
4/22/14 (1246 unread) - make1quilt - Yahoo Mail https://usmg6.mail.yahoo.com/neo/launch?retry_ssl=1#8783976455 2/3 completely eliminated set-in
seams. Instead of being entirely made with 60 degree diamonds and dot-to-dot seams, it is all
straight line, edge to edge sewing. The class will include setting the quilt together and a pair of
bonus blocks that use similar techniques.
Lecture:
The Quilt Made Me Buy It!
In this lecture/slide show Marti shares some of the personal stories behind the quilts in the
Michells' antique quilt collection. This lecture is perfect for those people who simply can't see
enough quilts.
FRIDAY
October 3, 2014
Full day class:
Fat Quarter Log Cabin
Unlike scrap Log Cabin quilts that feature a different fabric in every strip of a block, this scrap Log
Cabin quilt depends on orderly repetition of fabrics within each block. Learn a great method for
cutting and sewing that makes these blocks fast and, better yet, square. The four blocks you
make in class can be the start of a big quilt or a very satisfactory wallhanging approximately 30"
square.
SATURDAY
October 4, 2014
Grand Opening of Marti Michell Exhibit
Lecture:
Short Cuts, Top Tips & Secrets This is a lively lecture-demo filled with information about a lot of
different subjects and liberally illustrated with quilts. The topics vary with every lecture, as a new
hot tip pushes an old one out. Further information about times and class costs is coming soon!

About Marti: It is no wonder that Marti Michell, the 2004 Silver Star Honoree at the Houston
International Quilt Festival, is often introduced as a pioneer in the current quilt revival. In fact, in
1972 when Marti and her husband Richard started Yours Truly, Inc., a patchwork kit company,
there was no quilt industry. Since then, she has contributed in almost every capacity. Whether
she is participating as a teacher, quilter, author, publisher, manufacturer, designer, consultant,
judge or quilt collector, her enthusiasm for and love of quilting is always evident. Since 1995
the Michells have manufactured the From Marti Michell line of acrylic templates and specialty
rulers for rotary cutting. The 2004 Silver Star is a prestigious "lifetime achievement" award. In
1991 she also received the first Michael Kile award given for commitment to creativity
and excellence in the quilting industry. Marti lives in Atlanta, GA, but was born and raised in Iowa.
She received a B.S. in Textiles and Clothing and Home Ec Journalism from Iowa State
University.
