You're joining a community of athletes and families that are passionate about keeping fit and pursuing athletic success through canoeing and kayaking. Whether you're new to paddling or an experienced athlete at any level and age, Burloak will provide you the opportunity to have fun, physically test yourself and meet new friends. You’ll also benefit from some of the best coaches and programs in our sport. The past year saw members of our club compete at all levels, from elementary programs to the highest national and international competitions. As a club, we celebrated the amazing success of members, including our team’s second place finish at the Canadian National Sprint Canoe Kayak Championships in Regina. 50 Burloak athletes (7% of total competitors) won medals in 30% of the races! Our senior paddlers, including Olympians like Adam Van Koeverden, Mark Oldershaw, Brady Reardon and others, continue to inspire many of our younger paddlers to improve their skills and fitness! Along with our top-notch programs, our friendly atmosphere and welcoming members, we want to provide a chance to form lasting friendships. We invite you to join us. In this booklet, you’ll find information on our programs, membership details, costs, expectations, ways to learn and contribute, volunteer opportunities, and details on regattas, social activities and our plans for the year. Volunteer Commitment What does it mean to be a member of the Burloak Canoe Club? When you join the Burloak Canoe Club, you join a community of athletes and families that are passionate about keeping fit by canoeing and kayaking. Not only do you benefit from top quality coaching and programs, but you also have the opportunity to form lasting friendships. The best way to quickly become a part of the Burloak community is to get involved. Working together through volunteering, fundraising, clubhouse maintenance and social events keeps the Club healthy and viable. We've been able to keep our membership fees competitive by relying once again on Fundraising and Sponsorship. The Board of Directors has studied the Budget and the Summer Fee Schedule in accordance with our Vision 2018 Strategic Plan, which states: Conduct a review of BCC’s fee structure and develop a proposal for future fee adjustment. Despite our best efforts to balance fundraising with social activities, we struggle to meet our budgeted fundraising goals. To offset this shortfall, rather than raise our fees, we have decided to collect a $100 fundraising fee per family at time of Registration. Each family will receive ten $10 Burloak Raffle tickets, which can be sold to family, friends and neighbours to recoup this $100 fee. 8 prizes totaling $4,000 cash will be drawn July 26th. As a bonus, each family will automatically be entered into the raffle draw.
