/ Introduction
The European Patchwork Meeting
Sainte Marie-aux-Mines, a village located in the heart of the Val d’Argent, has a
rich cultural heritage: it is the cradle of the
Amish movement as well as an old center
of mining exploitation and a textile valley
which has been hosting the EPM (European Patchwork Meeting) for 21 years.
Each year the EPM organizes also an
international contest which attracts more
and more world-renowned artists. It is
the EPM’s showcase and travels as such
around the world in prestigious venues as
for example the “National Quilt Museum in
Paducah (USA).
This international renowned event and its
unique concept has unquestionably become the not to be missed event in the traditional and modern quilt world as well as
for art quilts.
If we mention also the classes, lectures
and a large area dedicated to shops specialized in everything related to this art, it is
not a surprise that this event meets such a
large success year after year..
The 4 villages of the Val d’Argent turn at
this occasion into art galleries dedicated
to quilts and textile art. It is for the great
pleasure of its 22 000 visitors that between
1200 and 1500 works from world-renowned artists are exhibited during this event.

Guests of honor countries
Traditionally the European Patchwork Meeting invites one European and one extra European country
to present the works of their quilters. This year you will discover Austria and South Korea.

sponsored by Clover
“Textile Impressions from Austria”
This exhibition is an opportunity to see some of
the outstanding work of Austrian quilters.
The artists while developing their own distinctive
style, are united by a passion in the expressive
possibilities of fabric, stitch and special surface
design techniques.
Some of the quilts are in a traditional style, pieced or appliqued, machine or hand quilted. Others
show landscapes that capture nature´s diversity
throughout the seasons.
It is a colourful, striking and diverse collection of
Austrian quilts !

« Bounce Bounce Korea Quilt »
35 young Korean artists are preparing to join
forces for «Bounce Bounce Korea Quilt»
After getting inspired by indigenous Korean
traditions, the artists involved are creating traditional quilts as well as contemporary ones
made with modern techniques.
It is in the Korean people temperament to like
changes and to be curious about all kind of
new things.

This is why you will also discover the original
and personal work of some art quilters.
Korean Quilt is proud to be exhibited at the
European Patchwork Meeting and is looking
forward to establish a link with European artists in order to raise the interest of Korean
quilters on what goes on outside their country.

The 2013 Quilt National is the 18th biennial
exhibition of art quilts.
In 1979, Quilt National was the first show of
its kind that specifically targeted the art quilt
niche and moved the art/craft of quilt making
from the bed to the wall.
Quilt National has grown with every biennial
presentation through 2005 and has since stabilized at between 500 and 600 entries (1100
1500 individual pieces of original work) from
which they choose their biennial show.
The 2013 juried exhibition was chosen from
a group of entries representing artists from
48 states, the District of Columbia, and 28
foreign countries.
The jurors for the 2013 exhibition were quilt
artists Linda Colsh (Middletown, MD), Judith
Content (Palo Alto, California), and art historian Penny McMorris (Bowling Green, Ohio).
The 2013 exhibition featured 87 works.
The exhibition at EPM features 24 works from
the original exhibition.
SAQA : « Redirecting the Ordinary »
sponsored by APQS
We often miss the essential and forget that
we can make our routines so much more vibrant and interesting.
Turning things around, upside down, inside
out, backwards or maybe even just a minuscule course correction can turn the common
into the uncommon, and make the expected
unexpected.
We asked the artists of SAQA to pick out an
object or a phenomenon, something they see
all the time but don’t really notice, and create
a work of art with this as the feature.

“Log Cabin: between tradition and modernity”
sponsored by Les Editions de Saxe
10 contemporary artists are giving their
own free interpretation of antic Log Cabin quilts.. Colors, patterns and color
harmony are their only constraints;
they are otherwise free to use their
own imagination.
A unique exhibition which mixes the
beauty of antic quilts with the subtle
transition towards contemporary quilts.

Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)
Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) represents 1/5
part of whole Russia. Most of Yakutia is located
in the permafrost. Needless to say that under
such circumstances, Yakut people worship
horses and consider them as sacred; another
reason to have the horse trappings made by
the best craftsmen.
Yakut patchwork is hand made using a unique
technique «kybytyy» (kantirovanie).
The ancient craftsmen combined different
colors and textures in the making of national
costumes. Nowadays, many modern craftsmen continue this tradition. They use a variety
of texture and color: fur, cloth, jacquard, rovduga (moose or deer hides), beads, metal and
others.
Tatiana Bushkova - Saddle Blanket 82x102
This exhibition will feature art works of modern
patchwork craftsmen, Yakut horse trappings
and national clothes from this particular region.

“The Best of QuiltCon 2015”
sponsored by Aurifil
The Modern Quilt Guild presents the
Best of QuiltCon 2015 from the guild’s
international conference and show. This
inspiring collection showcases the best
work of some amazing modern quilters.
Graphic and hip, these quilts represent
the top of what is coming out of today’s
modern quilting movement.

« De paires en paires et quelques autres »
(From Pairs to Pairs and Some Others)
In the exhibition «De paires en paires et quelques autres»
(From Pairs to Pairs and Some Others), Geneviève ATTINGER presents a retrospective of her textile works in which
she interpreted some themes from a woman’s stand point.
Their 2 by 2 association is based on a «contradiction» but
not just that.. a «likeness» but not just that.. a «chronology» but not just that.. and it shows a 15 year art journey
full of statements, revolts or more simply life stories.

« Un monde presque parfait »
(An almost perfect world)
The artist casts a look full of awe at the perfection of nature. There is so much beauty to preserve !
That however does not prevent her to be aware of the real
not so nice world around it. The exhibition «Un monde
Presque parfait» is the interpretation of her sensitive perception of her environment. Between happiness and sadness she wants to give her quilts a touch of cheerfulness
and hope. She likes to explore the unlimited field of techniques and the huge variety of the color range.

FRAMPTON
COOPER
Sheila (US)
« Spontaneous Abstraction »
Sheila Frampton-Cooper’s art quilts are bold and graphic and bursting with color and movement.
She is inspired by her subconscious fantasies and each
creation begins with the willingness to let it unfold and
reveal itself. The outcome is a mystery and she considers each piece as a gift given to her.
Intensely bright dynamic designs flow freely from Sheila
but she also has a softer side and is awed by the gentle
beauty of the natural world. Both sides are reflected in
this exhibit.

LANGE
Barbara (DE)
« The Color of Life »
Sponsored by Bernina
The evolution of life, forcing species to adapt again and
again is the overall theme of Barbara’s work.
One part of her work focuses on insects, the most successful creatures on earth when it comes to evolution,
while the other part concentrates on the changes in
human behavior and relationships over time.
Color gradations are a key element in her pieces, just
as meticulous quilting and an elaborate use of machine
embroidery.

/ Commercial Area and
the Country Village
EPM welcomes vendors from all around
the world. Most of them attend this exceptional event for 21 years, eager to present their new fabric collections as well as
demonstrate some new tools. Sewing and
long arm machines attract an increasing
number of quilters interested by the modern way of stitching.
For its third year, the « Country village »
aims to follow the “country trail” and to
inspire our international visitors in a warm
and friendly atmosphere.
