2013 ANNUAL REPORT
The Cable Natural History Museum connects people to Northwoods nature through
educational experiences that inspire wonder, discovery, and responsibility.
A Message from Ron Anderson, Board Chairperson
As I pass the torch I would like to thank Deb Malesevich who leads Museum staff and
volunteers in delivering our mission. Naturalists Emily Stone and Katie Connolly continue to
drive our education effort, and everyone is supported by new Office Manager/Bookkeeper
Leslie Strapon. Volunteers, organized by Volunteer Coordinator Beda McKinney, are essential
to the level of services we provide. I especially want to thank Mimi Crandall and Judy Rowley,
co-chairs of the Gala Picnic at the Uhrenholdt Farmstead, our major fund-raising event of the
year. Though the weather didn’t cooperate, everyone attending
had a great time. Sincere thanks to our very gracious host, Bob
Olson. Others contributing to the Museum’s fund-raising
efforts include: John and Susan Hand (CNHM Golf Classic), Liz Aase and Pris Nei (Power of the
Purse), Vivianne Hanke (Garden tour) and Ralph and Carolyn Owen (Food, Friends and Fun at The
Rivers Eatery).
The Museum receives no state or local financial support. It is largely financed by memberships,
contributions, fundraisers, grants, and program fees. Especially critical is an annual operating grant
received from the Mary Livingston Griggs and Mary Griggs Burke Foundation. Thank you all for
your support.
Ron Caple and Pris Nei were elected to the Museum Board of Directors for the first time in 2013.
Jodi Kingdon and I stepped down at the end of December, having completed our second three year
terms (plus prior service). We leave Anne Miller, incoming board chair, an organization with a
dedicated staff, great volunteer base, active and diverse board, and a beautiful building!
Museum Partnerships
Just like the partnership between algae and fungus creates an
even more flexible and more durable product called lichen, the
Museum’s partnerships allow us to achieve our mission in new
and innovative ways. One of our most successful partnerships is
with the National Park Service. National Park Rangers have
presented educational programs at the Museum for many years.
Since 2012, we have also collaborated on overnight canoe trips
for teens on the Namekagon River. With the NPS providing
logistical support, camping gear, and experienced paddlers, the
Museum staff focuses on planning educational activities, buying
food, attracting participants, and leading the trips. Together, we
provide safe and fun opportunities for young teens to gain
experience canoeing, fishing, camping, and making new friends.
We talk about water quality, river history, and conservation
heroes. The kids come away with newfound respect for the
National Park, a connection to Northwoods nature, and more
confidence in themselves. Both organizations further our
missions. All of that—and more—is made possible by
partnerships.
DEER CAMP Exhibit
DEER CAMP: Northwoods Whitetails
Deer Camp has been a very successful exhibit.
The tradition of deer hunting is strong and vibrant
here in Northern Wisconsin, and it seemed fitting
to highlight this as an annual exhibit. Deer Camp
has involved the community by inviting local
residents to share their deer hunting stories,
family photographs, and even their personal
taxidermy trophies. Visitors have walked away
with new insights into the biology of the
white-tailed deer, and this animal’s unique role in
our northern ecosystem. We have received many
positive comments from our visitors, praising the
exhibit’s educational value and enlightening
displays. Several visitors and members have remarked that this
is the best exhibit the Museum has ever done, and we hope to
hear that same sentiment year after year as we continue to
produce amazing exhibitions at the Museum!

DEVELOPMENT
Year after year, the members and donors make the Cable Natural History Museum a viable and unique resource in our region. We
continue to connect all visitors to Northwoods nature. We are grateful for your support.
In 2013, the Cable Natural History Museum kept operational expenses within the budget and generated essential revenues through a
wide variety of fundraising initiatives. These fundraisers included: Gala Picnic at the Uhrenholdt Farmstead, the Garden Tour, Power
of the Purse, CNHM Golf Classic, Food, Friends and Fun at the Rivers Eatery, Treasure Sales and our Annual Year End Fund
solicitation. Generous response from our donors inspires the staff, our volunteers, and the Board to strive for even greater
achievements when planning for the future. This outpouring of support makes educational experiences that inspire wonder,
discovery, and responsibility possible.
At the core of Museum endeavors are our programs and exhibits. These elements bring visitors back again and again. The
innovative Deer Camp Exhibit: The Natural & Cultural History of the Whitetail Deer, became a new meeting ground for friends and
family to share in Wisconsin’s deer hunting tradition. Our strong visitor base grows into an active and stable membership base.
Thanks to generous membership support and an anonymous matching challenge of $10,000, the loan balance on our building as of
December 31, 2013 is now $372,160. Congratulations to all and thank you! Mid-year 2013 marked the beginning of the second year
of the Moment of Awe, a four year capital campaign focused on retiring the Museum’s building mortgage. We have ongoing yearly
pledges and will be broadening our campaign to the whole community. We are staying on target!

Two-Year Revenue Comparison
The Cable Natural History Museum experienced substantial
revenue growth in 2013. A significant amount of this increase
related to the “Moment of Awe” capital campaign. In fact, the
capital campaign contributions allowed the Museum to reduce
our long-term indebtedness from approximately $535,760 to
$372,160. Debt reduction continues to be a major financial
objective of the Museum. It is also important to note that revenue
from other sources such as memberships and fundraisers were
strong as well.

Operating expenses increased a very modest 1.4% in 2013. The
Museum board and staff work very hard to run an efficient
operation. The outstanding balance on our line of credit continues
to be zero. The Museum is focused on maintaining a healthy
working capital fund balance to help insure smooth future
financial operations.
