We are very excited to have Brian Brazeal from Mississippi and Elmer Roush from North Carolina as our featured demonstrators. In addition, we have seven outstanding AACB members; Mike Rose, John Williams, Dave Smucker, Lonnie Farmer, Gary Bowman, Jason Bivens, and Broadus Weatherall performing 2-3 hour demonstrations throughout the conference. This is a great opportunity to see and learn from some of the best. Show up early and enjoy the terrific tailgate sales and shop the numerous vendors including Blue Moon Press, Inksmith T-shirts, Green River Knife supplies, Iron Mountain Forge Custom Blacksmithing Tools, Big Blu Hammer, and Blacksmith Supply with Tom Tom tongs. Please bring your own tailgate items to sell or trade. During the conference you may browse the numerous Iron-In-The-Hat and Auction items to include; a ring tree of metal art, AACB quilt, treadle hammer, tool box and tools, coal forge, small gas forge, anvil, 5 inch post vice, tools, and many other musthave items. We encourage everyone to donate items for the Auction and Iron-In-TheHat. You are welcome to display your blacksmith pieces in the Show and Tell area. There will be green coal classes available as well as one on one instruction from AACB teachers. For our family programs, Cindy Hestle will have a painting on slate class and Suzanne Lebeau will have a class making pine needle coasters. The forging contest is scheduled for Friday night. We will not know what Ron Nichols has up his sleeve for the contest, but it should be a big hit. Cannonsburgh Village offers a unique experience of days gone by and is within walking distance to numerous shops, restaurants, and Murfreesboro's historic downtown square. If you enjoy history, Murfreesboro is home to numerous pre-civil war estates and is home to the Stones River National Battlefield. We are looking forward to seeing you there! Traveling in the US and Europe , Brian worked and studied with some well known smiths like Professor Alfred Habermann in Austria, Tom Clark, Bob Patrick, Bill Bostas, Darrell Nelson, Terry Carson, and Tsur Sadan to name a few. Brian was the resident blacksmith at Mission San Juan Capistrano in California for 5 years, the 3rd largest attraction in the world, with over a million visitors each year. Brian has perfected traditional blacksmithing techniques by forging nearly every day and continues to share and promote those techniques with smiths all over the World. In April of 2011, Alec Steele, a 13 year old from the UK came to study with Brian for 15 days. Alec did so well, even while having to stand on a pallet for more reach while striking, that he became Brian’s inspiration for the International Young Smiths. The 2012 International Young Smiths “Team of Four” was the first. They were the featured demonstrators at the opening ceremonies of the July 2012 ABANA conference. He was most recently a featured demonstrator at the 2013 SOFA Quadstate Conference. 4 F E AT U R E D D E M O N S T R ATO R Elmer Roush - Brasstown, NC www.elmerroush.com Blacksmith Elmer Roush makes hand-forged functional hand tools, weapons, and implements from 10th Century Viking to 18th Century American styles. During the hot forging, Elmer precisely defines the shape and proportion of the item. Then, to varying degrees, the pieces are refined with cold work at the bench using filing, chasing, and/or sanding to give extra embellishment. Elmer has been studying the skilled hand-forging and metalsmithing work of the pre-and early- industrial smiths, enabling him to recreate historically accurate hand-forged tools and equipment such as dividers, calipers, early locks, kitchen utensils and broilers, and a whole host of edged tools that vary from working tools like hewing axes, froes, and hatchets to historic replicas such as the Viking axes. 5 AACB DEMONSTRATORS Mike Rose - Layout & Design - Clinch River Forge, Knoxville, TN Mike is currently a Professor of Fine Arts at Pellissippi State College in Knoxville, TN, where he teaches Blacksmithing, Sculpture, and Design. He is well known as a master blacksmith at Dollywood Theme Park for 25 years. John Williams - Joe Humble Doorknocker Possum Trot Forge, Adams, TN He has been seriously blacksmithing for about 25 years. He studied with Bob Coogan and others at the Appalachian Center for Crafts at Smithville. He took his first formal blacksmithing class from Doyle Neely. Broadus Weatherall - Cowboy Hat, Door Pull Fiddler’s Grove Forge, Lebanon, TN He began blacksmithing about 20 years ago with two classes at the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis TN. He is active today at Fiddlers Grove Blacksmith Association. 6 AACB DEMONSTRATORS Lonnie Farmer - Frying Pan Choo Choo Forge, Chattanooga, TN Lonnie Farmer has been a smith for 30 years. He has studied under Clay Spencer, Jerry Darnell, Peter Ross, and others, and has instructed at John C. Campbell Folk School. He currently teaches at Choo Choo Forge. Dave Smucker - Metallurgy/Heat Treatment Brasstown Forge, Brasstown, NC Dave has more than 50 years of experience. He has written articles for blacksmithing news-letters and edited the Appalachian Area Chapter of Blacksmiths Newsletter for six years. Dave is widely known for his heat-treating expertise. Jason Bivens - Knife Handle Making, Warren Co. Forge, McMinnville, TN Jason has been a smith for 20 years and teaches knife making at the Appalachian Center for the Arts and Crafts. He has studied under Bob Coogan, Don Fults, Jim Batson, Ryan Johnson, and Vance Baker. Gary Bowman- Knife Handle Making, Warren County Forge, McMinnville, TN Gary began making knives in the 70s and has studied under Jim Liand Bob Loveless.
