Student Recognition Please join us this Friday, March 6 for Morning Sing and Student Recognition. Primary awards will be interspersed throughout Morning Sing, which begins at 8:15am. Intermediate students will be recognized at an assembly beginning at 9:15am. Awards this month are IB Attribute Award for Reflective, IB Learner Award and IB Action Award. We are also recognizing students from each class for second trimester academic improvement and perfect attendance. If your student is receiving an award, you will receive a notice in your Wednesday Folder this week. Heritage Day Our next spirit day is this Friday, March 6. Student Leadership voted and selected Heritage Day in honor of our IB PYP. Wear something special and authentic that shows your heritage or another culture you’re interested in. It could be as simple as a necklace or t-shirt; or it could be a more ornate garment. Either way, it should be an authentic reflection of a culture rather than a costume of some sort. Student leadership is planning to highlight the day with international games at recesses. If you would like to introduce an international game to students at recess, please email Mrs. Hanson at [email protected]. New Cafeteria Systems In an effort to make lunchtime a positive experience for all, we instituted several new cafeteria systems this week. First, students are now allowed to sit by grade level, rather than by class. So tables are labeled by grade, rather than by teacher. Students may still earn Free Sit Friday during which they can sit at any table, but most days will be by grade level. Second, as often as weather allows, the tables will be moved outside so that students can enjoy their lunch in the fresh air. We will keep an eye on the forecast and stay inside if it is too cold, too wet, too windy, or too hot. Otherwise, expect to see your children dining al fresco! Little Free Library We now have a Little Free Library on Camellia Ave behind the cafeteria. What is a Little Free Library? It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering placed where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book and bring back another book to share. Please help us fill our Little Free Library good books, and come back to trade them often! Please note, this is NOT an extension of our Caleb Greenwood library, and as such, our Caleb books cannot be returned to this box! Thank you to Autumn Nguyen and her family who got this project started, collected funds from the community, built the library and provided the stand, to the Coombs and Tunnicliff families who painted it, to Zimmerman Roofing for donating roofing supplies, and to Bill Limpus and Todd Domiano for installation! In Need of Another Yard Duty! We are in urgent need of a third yard duty for the remainder of the school year. 11am-1pm daily. Please contact Mrs. Hanson if you are interested and available (without children) for those hours. Computer Lab Support? We are looking for some volunteers to get our computer lab started each morning. This job consists of starting each computer in the lab so that they are ready when teachers arrive with the their classes and then stopping by to make sure they are turned off in the afternoon. If you can commit to this one day a week, please contact Mrs. Hanson. Auction News Tickets are now on sale for the April 10th Spring Auction online or via the green folder next week. Come join our Caleb family at an old downtown Sacramento Speakeasy for cocktails and heavy appetizers. A great auction begins with great donations so what can you contribute? Ideas include: gift cards, vacation home/time share rental, lessons, artwork, professional services or be willing to host a theme party. The Learner Profile, Communicator Students who are COMMUNICATORS are able to think and communicate in more than one language. They can express their ideas by speaking, drawing and writing. They can also communicate using mathematical language and symbols. How can parents help to develop students who are Communicators at home?  Encourage your child to stay in touch with relatives and friends who live in other countries by writing letters, using the phone or sending email.  When working on mathematics homework, encourage your child to explain his/her answer to you orally or by drawing a picture.  Ask your child thought provoking questions and encourage them to discuss them with you. For example:  What would you do if you were scared of someone at school?  Is there anything you cannot buy with money?  Should you get an allowance? Why or why not? Work with your child to improve his/her listening skills. Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others. World Poetry Day is an invitation to reflect on the power of language and the full development of each person's creative abilities. Students will have the opportunity to create a Dream Flag poem during lunch recess and recite their poems at our Open Mic stage. IB Action An important component of the IB PYP is the Action Cycle: Reflect, Choose, Act. Talk with your child about the Central Ideas and Lines of Inquiry in their current IB unit. What are they interested in? What can they research and learn more about? How can they use that learning to take ACTION in our community?
