Aboriginal Youth Outreach Worker Full time, full benefit position - 37.5 hours/week The Agency The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a community-based charitable organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of crime and increasing community safety through preventative and restorative justice practices. To accomplish these ends, we provide direct services to individuals at risk, advocacy for effective responses to crime with the individuals involved and education for youth and adults in the community. The Program The Aboriginal Youth Outreach Program (AYOP) supports multi-barriered youth aged 12 to 24 who may have been involved with, or are at-risk of involvement with the criminal justice system. Aboriginal youth who participate in AYOP are likely in unstable or unsafe housing and are at risk of becoming homeless are in a shelter situation. AYOP offers one to one support, family mediation, crisis resolution, counselling, goal setting, assistance with securing affordable and safe housing, advocating on behalf of the youth for funding with bands, assistance finding and maintaining employment and/or further education. The Position The Aboriginal Youth Outreach Worker will work in an integrated and collaborative way with the existing program staff, Youth Services Team, wider CJHS Team and the community to ensure clients are supported, connected to appropriate services and successfully achieve their goals. They will strive to establish and maintain a strong professional network, deal with routine and crisis situations, and maintain a creative and sensitive approach in meeting the needs and acting as a positive role model for Aboriginal youth. Roles and Responsibilities will include: Client centred case management; Build supportive community relationships; Complete casework documentation; Establish positive working relationships with community resources; Work collaboratively with the existing Outreach Worker; Actively participate in the Youth Services Team. This position will end March 31, 2016 with the possibility of an extension. The successful candidate will have postsecondary education in a relevant discipline (ie. Human services, social work, etc.) and will have a minimum of 3 years of experience working with the target population. Knowledge of Aboriginal culture, unique barriers, and community resources is required.
