Cam girls are pioneering the first real change to the world’s oldest profession by using the safety and intimacy of internet chat rooms to develop their own unique sexual personas and performances that keep men returning to their screens and “tipping” generously. A cam girl is part entertainer, part therapist, and part sex worker. These women approach their cam “jobs” with creativity and joy. And can make a lot of money doing it. Watch them perform. Listen to their stories. And be prepared to have your beliefs about sex work challenged. ! SEAN DUNNE BIO: ! Sean Dunne made his feature-film-directing debut with OXYANA, a portrait of a small coal-mining town caught in the grips of the Oxycontin epidemic. OXYANA premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2013 where Dunne won the award for Best New Documentary Director as well as a received a Special Jury Mention for Best Documentary.! Dunne has directed five previous short documentaries including: THE ARCHIVE (nominated for an Emmy in 2011), MAN IN VAN, THE BOWLER, STRAY DAWG, BLACK BIKE WEEK and AMERICAN JUGGALO (named documentary of the year for 2011 by the website, Short of the Week). Most recently Dunne released the micro-feature FLORIDA MAN.! Hailed as the “master of fringe Americana” for his ability to realistically capture half-mythical corners of the country, Dunne’s approach to documentary is to give his subjects the ease and opportunity to find their own voice and his viewers the freedom to form their own conclusions.! ! ! ! CAMGIRLZDOC.COM 2 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:! This all started with a simple pop-up advertisement. Nothing crazy, just what normally pops up in the background if you’re watching porn on the internet – a naked woman broadcasting live from what appears to be her bedroom, she’s having fun, and she’s being real. That’s when the questions started, who is she? Where is she? Is she making money? And, eventually, what type of person does this type of work? What leads them to this? Once I heard her refer to herself as a “cam girl” I immediately thought to myself this is my next film.! Following my first feature length documentary, OXYANA, I was interested in making a film about women, specifically women who challenged the establishment. When I began to research and speak with some of the women I was blown away by how intelligent, well-rounded and business savvy they were. It felt unexpected, they were very much empowered by this work. To me, cam girls are doing essentially the same thing that I do, they just do it naked. They are artists who conceive, create, market and distribute their own content. The only difference between a cam girl and myself is that I have societies blessing and they don’t. For those reasons, and many more as I would later learn, they inspired me.! So we raised a modest budget of $69,000 on Kickstarter and hit the road. Our subjects ran the gamut in terms of backgrounds, locations, ages, body types and motivations but one thing seemed to ring true, they all felt strong and empowered by this work and were growing as people and gaining independence by sharing themselves with the internet. We took a meticulous approach to properly depicting the world of camming. I conducted no oncamera interviews in fear that it would intimidate them and instead sat with the girls for a series of audio-only conversations which we layered over footage of the girls camming to bring the audience into as intimate a space as we possibly could. The women we featured in Cam Girlz represent a cross-section of a growing industry where the girl next door is transforming into a fearless entrepreneur whose tools are her sexuality, her creativity and a good internet connection.! To me this is ultimately a film about connection; camming is where love and technology intersect. Cam Girlz is my attempt to capture the essence of this community, the energy of the women involved and the experience of being immersed in their world.
