A RECENT SUCCESS
Our member Ernie Scoggins is recovering
from an emergency quintuple bypass surgery
that was performed as soon as the Doc saw
the plaque miners in Ernie’s arteries going on
strike. Seems the little buggers didn’t care for
the working conditions and new openings
were made available by hospital management. More news on Ernie and his recovery
will be known after this is published.

you can. In the past month many of us have been
working for the weekend and others have gone out
to celebrate special occasions with our families,
while others got to do some vacationing.
Nancy and I got to celebrate and attend the graduation of our daughter Sasha from the Disney endowed California Institute for the Arts. She received
a Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Film School in Character Animation. You might remember her as the
little girl that drew pictures during our Sunday Chapter Meetings. We have our fingers crossed as she

may have a job with a well-known TV cartoon show
meanwhile she will be an assistant teacher in the
Summer Program at the University.
Another one of the little girls that grew up in the
chapter got married last weekend in Southern California. Heather Chipman, the daughter of our Chip
was married in a small ceremony with lots of family
and friends in attendance. Heather is currently has
enlisted in the U. S. Navy and it looks like it is a career move for her. Now Chip only needs to find a girl
for his son AJ. We first met AJ when Chip used an
old belt and some duct tape to strap him to his
Goldwing to make sure he didn’t lose him on one of
his favorite Napa rides.
Chip was busy with the wedding plans as he became caterer and planner as Charli was under the
weather all weekend. We were busy spending time
with the goings on with Sasha and even though only
miles apart we both missed out on the others celebrations.
If you had something going on this last month or
event next month put a note together for the newsletter. You never know who may read it and have
some good memories return or best wishes to send.

Thank You—California!
T
hank You, California for coming out and supporting the Region F Convention! Not only did
you come out and play, but over 31 people volunteered to sell tickets this year. We would not
be able to meet our obligation if you, California, didn’t
support us. When that many people come together to
sell tickets, the burden is lighter on each and every one
of us. Again, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank
you for all that you do for our fabulous state. For those
who didn’t have the opportunity of visiting Tucson this
year at the Region F convention, you will have another
opportunity to see Tucson in November when Arizona
will be having their state convention.
Tucson has many sites to see and it is a very beautiful
location. Just a few thing to see while visiting Tucson:
 Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum
 Mission San Xavier del Bac
 Saguaro National Park
 Tucson Mountain Park
 Old Tucson Studios
 El Presidio Historic District
 Pima Air and Space Museum
 University of Arizona
 St. Augustine Cathedral
 Reid Park Zoo
 International Wildlife Museum
And let’s not forget the infamous Tombstone!
In the southeastern corner of Arizona is Tombstone, the
famous Wild West town of the silver boom. The town
has preserved many of the original buildings and in fact,
restored them to the point that they no longer look historical. Actors dressed in Western style clothing walk
through town and staged gunfights break out in the
streets. Tombstone is known for its history, but today it
has a much more commercial feel, rather than historical.
Nonetheless, Tombstone is a fun day trip from Tucson
and the surrounding areas.
So, mark your calendars for October 30, 31 and November 1st when we’ll be back in Tucson for Arizona’s
state convention.
Speaking of conventions, we are now finalizing a lot of
our plans for our state convention this year over Labor
day Weekend. The dates: September 4th – 6th. The location: The DoubleTree Hotel in lovely downtown Bakersfield. We are excited and know this convention will be a
lot of fun! Our theme this year is “the Sixties”. How fun
is that, an era most of us lived through in our younger
days and for many who don’t even remember it. Can you
say “Woodstock”? All kidding aside, we are looking forward to creating a fun atmosphere for all of us to get
together again and have some fun as we always do.
From the Kern County Museum to the Fox Theater,
there are many things to do in Bakersfield, plus riding.
Yes, this is riding in the surrounding areas of Bakersfield.
Ask anyone in Bakersfield about Highway 58 to San
Luis Obispo and they’ll tell you there’s no such thing and
then direct you to the super-slab Highway 46. Don’t listen! Beginning about a dozen miles west of Bakersfield,
Hwy 58 is a roller-coaster all the way to the coast. Giant
sweepers with giddying changes in elevation run
through pastoral farmland for more than an hour. Then
suddenly the road tightens down into twisting loops as
you dive into canyon country. Just as suddenly, it all
stops and you find you’ve arrived at San Luis Obispo’s
back door.
Lake Isabella
Welcome to Lake Isabella, heart of the Kern river Valley, California’s best kept secret. With many activities,
including fishing, hiking, camping, windsurfing, skiing, or
just relaxing, the lake itself has much to offer. Don’t miss
one of California’s largest ‘Wild West’ celebrations,
4
Whiskey Flat Days – four days of fun for the entire family. The area is in the southern end of the Sierra Nevada
range and the lake itself is located in low mountains at
an elevation of approximately 2,500 feet. Also, some of
the Isabella Lake Fishing Derby, one of the country’s largest trout derbies. With the “wild and scenic” Kern river
flowing into and out of Lake Isabella Lake, there are
amazing sights and great times to be had by all.
We know that you all have choices to make as to
where to spend not only your time, but your money. We
thank you in advance for choosing to spend your Labor
Day Holiday with us and 300+ of your closest friends.
activities, but they are limited so you can take Sunday
and just relax by the pool, fora ride or go sight-seeing
around town. The Gold Angels will be performing in the
morning (location pending), with the PLP Facilitator class
and then our Dinner with a Show at 5pm. The closing
ceremonies will be at 7:30pm.
Remember to pre-register by August 15th to be eligible
to win a set of tires from Dunlop. Grand prizes will include a chance to wing a $1,250.—Best Buy gift card donated by Kevin Griffith, as well as another opportunity to
win another $1,250.00 gift card for those attending the
dinner on Sunday evening. Remember, there will be en-

We will have 7 Rider Education classes, plus CPR/First
Aid with both full class and re-certifications. An ARC class
(space is very limited – only 3 spots left), a TRC class (12
spots available) and we are also having a PLP facilitator
class. On the Leadership training side, we will have classes available. We’ve attached the list of classes being
offered this year. Please remember that the ARC, TRC
and First Aid classes have a cost for attending. We ask
that you please sign up for the PLP facilitator class so we
klnow how many students to plan for.
As well as all of the educational opportunities, we are
planning a great schedule. The IOY and COY selection
process is on Friday, stage interviews are set for 3:004:00 so you can come and cheer on your chapter’s honorees. Opening ceremonies are on Friday at 7:00 pm
when we will announce our new District IOY and COY for
2015-2016. Saturday is chock full of activities. Starting
early Saturday morning, the Masters Breakfast at 7am
($15 and you must pre-register) where you will have a
chance to win a new set of tires donated by Sky Med.
After breakfast there will be classes and vendors. Chapter games will be from 1-4pm. Bingo is from 4-6:30pm
followed by ice cream at 6:30 and the day ending with
the Light Parade starting at 8pm. Sunday will also have
tertainment at the dinner and again, you will have an
awesome time, all for $28.00 each. Where else can you
go for dinner, entertainment and a chance to win a
$1,250.00 Best buy gift card for that low price? Also,
there will be a cash award for those dressed in costume
– 60’s style! Prizes for Best Chapter, Best Male and Best
Female. And don’t forget convention T-shirts! Ruth Burke
is busy creating, designing and drawing yet another awesome T-Shirt this year. This will be “Dude” the turtle’s
third appearance and will definitely have that ‘60’s look.
Let’s not forget our upcoming chapter rallies in June.
Starting off on June 6th – CA-1L’s Pirate ride. Also a great
event and the riding is absolutely gorgeous in their neck
of the woods. Follow that up with CA-1D celebrating our
Flag on June 14th. They put on a great rally with an awesome breakfast hosed by the Elks Lodge. Last, but not
least is CA-2N, “Fun with the Frogs” on June 27th. The
frogs” always put on a great rally and Angels Camp has
some of the best riding in the entire state. So mark your
calendars for our June events!
Until next month, ride well and ride often.

Corbin Seats
How to keep your
customers happy!
Tom Whitson
Assistant Chapter Director
A
couple of years ago the chapter took
a tour of Corbin Seats factory in Hollister. After the tour I decided to buy
a Corbin seat. My stock seat was so
uncomfortable that after 50 miles I would have
butt ‘burn’ that was unbearable and got worse
as the ride continued.
I started to start checking around on other
motorcycle seat builders and found most were
mail order while the others used your seat pan
and just recovered your old seat for just about
the same price as the Corbin. I chose the Corbin
because I was able to ride to the factory and be
fitted in height and riding position along with
my choice of material and design on the seat at
no extra charge. And it only took one day! I was
in by 8AM out by 5PM due to the design I chosen for my seat. What a ride home! I didn’t
think that this seat could get any more comfortable and I was wrong. In about 1,000 miles
this seat really got comfortable. After this
‘break-in’ period of being on this seat, I could
tell the difference and it was like melting into
the seat.
All went well for about six months and I
started to notice that my wonderful seat wasn’t
as comfortable as it once was. My legs started
to ache after about 100 miles and my butt
started to hurt. I just couldn’t figure it out until
one day I discovered a couple of lumps devel-
oping in my seat. It felt like the seat was breaking down.
I called Corbin and was told to bring in the
motorcycle so I made an appointment and Ken
Knox and I were off to Corbin. We arrived
around 8AM and the seat mechanics went to
work. They said it would be couple of hours and
30 minutes later said that the seat and cover
would have to be rebuilt. Ken then said he
would have to leave no later than 2PM. While
we were at the factory we were told to go
ahead and look around so Ken and I went all
over the factory and had a wonderful time.
Around 1:15PM my seat rebuilt and was
mounted on my Goldwing. Paper work was
done and we were on our way home - at no
charge.
Corbin is one company that really believes in
customer service that includes everyone working for the company, from the office to everyone in the factory… and best of all, Corbin seats
are made in the USA.

Interesting Concept…
And tasty, too!
Rick McCusker
I
n CA-C, we do a LOT of
dinner rides and for the
most part each and
every one of them is
enjoyable. We can look at
the calendar and see where the chapter has chosen for
the meal and if it sounds interesting, we go. But, would
you go somewhere on a dinner ride and you DIDN’T
know where we were going, would you still go?
That was the idea behind April 30th dinner ride. When
a call went out for someone to lead the ride, I readily
volunteered. Almost everyone at the meeting wanted to
know, “Where we going?” Rather than say, “Beats me!” I
The location was entered into the GPS and off we
went to:
Smack Pie Pizza, Lodi
Interesting concept…. Smack Pie Pizza is located in the
downtown section of Lodi and is unlike any pizza place
you’ve ever seen. Your first stop, just inside the door is to
order your personal pizza. They only sell one size and it’s
about 10”. When you order, you tell them what toppings
you want and they get busy. First ‘stage’ is preparing the
crust. A ball of pizza dough is placed on what looks like a
giant pancake grill. The top is brought down and by
‘armstrong’ power, your crust is perfectly formed. As you
move down the front of the counter, your pizza is assembled before your eyes from the many, many possible toppings on display in front of you. You reach the end of the
replied, “You’ll have to show up to find out”
A couple of days before the ride, Fearless Leader, (aka
Bob Harris) called and tried to influence the destination
by telling me about this great place he and his lovely
bride, Nancy had recently visited. Let me say it now… If
you are going to try to influence my decision, there had
better be large sums of cash involved (or a really cool
Goldwing accessory I don’t already have). A phone call?
How cute!
At the appointed time, CA-C members met at the
Chevron station (L2) in Elk Grove to head out to the
“Mystery Dinner Ride.” I gathered everyone together
and instructed those present to write down the name of
their favorite dining place and please make sure it can
handle this crowd. Now drop the slip of paper in the hat.
Unbeknownst to me, Fearless Leader had dropped SEVERAL votes in the hat and SURPRISE – one of his slips was
drawn.
line and pay for your pie, drink and anything else your
little heart desires…
Your pizza goes into an oven in front of you and because the crust is very, very thin is ready to eat in less
than 10 minutes. And it’s an interesting pie. The crust is
very crispy, almost cracker-like. Fresh toppings really
make this a delicious pizza. The location is interesting,
too. Right in the heart of downtown Lodi, somewhere I
had never been.
Bottom line is always, even though it’s a distance from
home, is it good enough to go back? In this case, yes, it
is!!!

What About YOUR ‘TCLOCK’?
Gordon Flowers
CA-C Rider Educator
T
here is a GWRRA form for checking your bike
over using the acronym ‘TCLOCK’. This time
though, we're not talking about a mechanical
check of the bike, its tires and controls. We're
talking about you! That's right, you, the person that is
about to straddle the beast and head off to wherever the
GPS takes you (hopefully you want to go there)!
Wow, does this sound too much like WebMD? Perhaps we could go through a list of symptoms and/or conditions for you to affirm or deny on your own. Nah, that’s
too much "nanny state" for me. I prefer to mention a
few things that may be most common and urge you to
take personal responsibility for handling them.
Had a physical lately, or perhaps an annual checkup? I'm due for one myself and just got an automated
phone message from the doc reminding me to go to the
lab and get a full blood workup. Kind of like testing the oil
on a big rig (yea, I wish) to see if the level of contaminants is high enough to warrant an oil change. In my
case, the doc and I are watching blood sugar and cholesterol, and managing them with a few meds, diet (ugh!)
and exercise (ouch!).
What about some stretching and walking to get the
blood circulating and improve muscle tone? You can even
REALLY get some cardiovascular benefit just from walking. Based on your fitness level and your doc's advice,
you could start with a few laps around the dining room
table (without using it!), down the hall and back to the
kitchen for another swig of water. Seriously, some of our
group could start with a small number of steps and greatly improve with time and practice. Before long, you could
be walking around the block(s) and eventually down to
the local market instead of driving. Give it a try. After my
hip replacement, the physical therapist said that walking
was the single best exercise for me to get back my muscle
tone and keep fit.
How about that medicine cabinet? Are there compounds in there that are no longer needed...really, or are
you continuing to self-medicate. Most of us are old
enough to not have teens living at home, but grandchildren may be tempted to experiment with Grandpa's neat
selection of pain "killers", muscle relaxers, etc. If you
have items in your medicine cabinet that are no longer
needed, dispose of them properly. The Drug Enforcement
Administration (there I go with nanny state again!) advertises on TV when they have disposal days. You could
check their website at www.dea.gov and with your local
county hazardous waste folks.
What about the fridge, freezer and kitchen counter? My beautiful wife Cathy has helped me make better
choices of what I put in my mouth (get your mind out of
the gutter!). I used to be able to hear the ice cream yelling for me to rescue it from the freezer when I walked
by! I could not control my addiction and would actually
sit in front of the TV eating from the carton. Talk about a
double whammy. Cookies and chips on the counter don't
yell quite as loudly as the ice cream used to, but they can
be nags. So, we do not buy ice cream any more unless
there is a family celebration that warrants something to
go with the pie! Or cake! If we (mostly me) have a craving, we'll go over to the local McD's and have a soft
cone. Actually, it is within walking range, so next time a
craving arises, I'll measure it against having to walk to get
the cone.
We all have things in our lives that we choose to do
that we know are not the best for us. Heck, we sometimes do things that are downright harmful. Each of us is
only going to do what we want to do. No amount of nagging, research, or cajoling will make us do anything--we
have to choose or decide to do it ourselves.
So take AT LEAST as good care of yourself as you do of
your faithful iron horse. That way, you will both be able
to have many, many happy miles together!
8
A VERY Unusual ride...
Rick McCusker
W
hat an interesting ride most of
you missed! On May 3rd, four
members of CA-C met at the
West Sacramento departure
spot, Chevron, at the appointed time for a very
unusual ride to Santa Rosa. Our intended first
stop was the Black Bear Diner in Napa for breakfast. It didn’t work out that way.
Instead of Black Bear Diner, we spotted the
Butter and Cream Bakery and Diner close to downtown Napa. None of us had ever been there, so a quick U-turn later
and we were there. The place looks very interesting from
the outside and once you step through the door, you are
not disappointed. There is a full-service bakery as well as a
diner at this ‘50’s style place. There is a full counter that
seats about 20 customers and 8 tables.
Our arrival was timed perfectly as we were seated within
5 minutes. Those arriving after us had to wait – and from
what we heard, this place is so popular and the food so
good, the wait can be up to an hour on the weekends. The
food was very good, with very nice sized servings and not a
complaint was heard from our small group.
Charles Shulz Museum
Back in the saddle again and it was off to Santa Rosa via
Highway 12 through Sonoma and Kenwood. We arrived
at our destination, the Charles Shulz Museum in Santa Rosa
by 11 AM.
9
Does the name sound familiar? It Should! Charles Shulz is
the creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip and was a longterm resident of Santa Rosa, California. At this facility,
there are three different buildings – The Peanuts Gift Shop,
the Redwood Empire Ice Rink and the Charles Shulz Museum – our destination.
We checked out the gift shop and found it full of everything you could imagine from the Peanuts characters.
There were lots of stuffed Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy,
Schroeder dolls and the other characters as well as many,
many more items adorned with the Peanuts characters images.
Across the street is the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, built
by Charles Shulz in 1969. Why did he build it? Well, he grew
up in Minnesota and missed his ice skating and hockey
days. So he built this NHL-sized Arena not only for himself,
but with the idea the youngsters would love to come here
and learn to skate – and play ice hockey! During the winter
in Minnesota, his dad would carve out a rink for Charles
and the neighborhood kids to play ice hockey. He also started an adult ice hockey league and played for well over 30
years. One of the honors bestowed on Charles Shulz was
his inclusion in the Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. Now you know
where Snoopy’s love of ice hockey and his skills driving the
“Zamboni” ice conditioner come from!
A little further on is the Charles Shulz Museum. Inside
there is a theater showing a LOT of the Peanuts TV programs on a continuous basis. There are literally hundreds of
his Peanuts comic panels throughout the museum. In fact,
on wall is decorated with 8,200 panels made of ceramic
tile! This wall is magnificent and is about 25 feet wide by 30
feet high.
Upstairs on the second floor is an exact replica of his
studio where he drew the strip on a daily basis. There is
also a replica of the famous Snoopy doghouse (aka Zamboni ice rink resurfacer and Sopwith Camel).
We had lived in the area for years (Joyce – most of her
traffic on this 2-lane road.
She continued to scream about her “baby”
and her “dog”, so I opened the back door and
searched the rear seat looking for her “baby.” It
turned out her “baby” was her dog and it had
already been rescued. I then reached up and put
the car in park (the engine was still running) and
reached for the key to turn off the ignition. It
life) and had never been here. We waited way too long!
We will be back!
It gets better…!
The ride home had its moments, too. Coming back on
Hwy 12, I was leading our group of 3 bikes and had a couple of cages in front of me just south of Kenwood. The
cage 2 in front of me suddenly got sideways on the road
and wound up on its passenger side, almost upside down
in the roadside ditch. We parked our bikes and went to
help out the driver of the car. She was climbing out the
drivers’ side window, screaming about her “baby.” A couple of other drivers and myself managed to get the car
back on its wheels after we got her out of the car. Carl
Blattenberg and Tom Jefferies were busy controlling
turned out there was no ignition and
the car had been ‘hot-wired’. A police
officer had arrived (he was passing by,
not his jurisdiction) and assisted with
traffic control. Shortly thereafter, firefighters arrived to take over. We remounted our bikes and departed. I really wanted to hang around and wait
for CHP to arrive so I could hear her
explain the lack of an ignition, but it
was getting late and we needed to
move on…. What an interesting interruption to our ride!
This just “goes to show ya” – you
never know WHAT is going to happen
on one of our rides!!!
