Getting There: Considerations for becoming - and staying - licensed as a pharmacy technician Sue Sampson BScPharm, Med, Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists Sue Sampson graduated with her pharmacy degree from Dalhousie University in 1986 and Masters in Education from Mount Saint Vincent University in 2009. Throughout her pharmacy career, she has worked in a variety of practice settings including community, hospital, academia, continuing pharmacy education, and now currently holds a position at the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists as Project Director/Lead Pharmacy Technician Regulation. 2. Navigating Change- The Challenges and Opportunities of a new profession in New Brunswick George Murray, Deputy Registrar, New Brunswick College of Pharmacists After obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Dalhousie University, George’s pharmacy career kicked off in the community retail pharmacy setting as pharmacist manager of Lawton’s Drugs in Riverview NB, then as pharmacist/owner of Shoppers Drug Mart stores in Woodstock N.B and finally opening and owning Tantramar Pharmacy, which he operated in Sackville N.B. for more than 20 years. In 2013, George completed his Masters of Public Administration Degree from Leiden University in The Netherlands. Prior to joining the College he worked as a consultant for his company PharMur C Consulting. As Deputy Registrar, George works to promote the health and well-being of the public, in collaboration with other provincial regulatory authorities and health disciplines, through regulation and development of the pharmacy profession. Over the years, George has been involved with various pharmacy organizations, including: -the Canadian Pharmacist’s Association where he served as President in 2005 - 2006 -the New Brunswick Pharmacist’s Association -the Canadian Council on Continuing Education in Pharmacy -Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada George has been an active member of his communities, serving on boards of local Chambers of Commerce, Community Development and Economic Development, as well as serving as a Councilor and Deputy Mayor for the Town of Sackville. Outside of work, George plays golf and curls (neither as often nor as well as he would like). He and his wife Minous live in Riverview N.B. and are very thankful for and proud of their six children. 3. Professionalism Comes with a Price Gary McCaslin, CAIB, Registered Insurance Broker, McCaslin Horne Insurance Brokers Biography to come 2015 SPEAKERS 10:30 AM Baronet Ballroom Stacey Smith, Pharmacist and Certified Diabetes Educator Stacey graduated from Dalhousie college of pharmacy in 2008 and began working in retail pharmacy. Shortly after she began her career she took an interest in diabetes management and decided to become a certified diabetes educator, which involves writing and passing a national, board certified, exam. After receiving her CDE designation in 2011 she began working for 3 doctors as their in house CDE. This has now become her passion and has evolved to 4 clinics with 10+ doctors. Additionally, Stacey enjoys educating her colleagues on diabetes and recently delivered a series of talks to pharmacists all over Nova Scotia. When Stacey isn't in the pharmacy or diabetes clinic, you can find her enjoying time with her husband, Ryan, and two children, Lucas and Lilah. 1:00 PM Baronet Ballroom 1. Louise Lapensée R.PhT, Pharmacy Technician Supervisor/Pharmaceutical Contracting Authority, CF Health Services (Atlantic) Louise Lapensée graduated in 1991 from the Algonquin College as a pharmacy technician. In 1996 became a certified pharmacy technician from the Ontario College of Pharmacist. In 2012 became a registered pharmacy technician from the Ontario College of Pharmacist. Louise started at the National Defence Medical Center in 1991 in Ottawa and in 1995 became the Senior Pharmacy Technician until 2002. She also briefly work at the QE2 in Halifax before a pharmacy technician supervisor position became available in 2003 at the Halifax Base. She also works at the Shearwater base. 3:00 PM Logan Renner Baronet Ballroom Logan received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Alberta in Biological Sciences and Chemistry. The main focus of his studies was Immunology and Infection, which gave him a well‐rounded understanding of aseptic technique and sterility. He also received a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Trials Research and completed a University of Florida College of Pharmacy accredited Sterile Preparation Course. Logan spent three years running a pharmacy sterile lab in Ontario before relocating to Moncton to become the Sterile Compounding Manager at Mapleton Pharmacy. 4:00 PM Baronet Ballroom Cindy Maloney, BScPharm Biography to come 2015 SPEAKERS 9:00 AM Baronet Ballroom Mark Barnes BSc. Pharm; RPhc, Director of Pharmacy Services /VP of Marketing & Business Development, Respect Rx Pharmasave, Centre of Excellence for the Treatment of Addiction and Mental Health, Ottawa Ontario, Owner/Pharmacist Manager, Westboro Pharmasave, Ottawa Ontario Mark Barnes graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1998 and graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 2001. Since graduation Mark has enjoyed working in community pharmacy management with several companies before joining Westboro Pharmasave in 2008. As the managing partner and co-owner of Westboro Pharmasave along with his passion for the profession, he enjoys being an advocate for pharmacy and helping the community wherever and whenever possible. This helped Westboro Pharmasave be recognized with Pharmasave Ontario’s 2010 “Best Managed Pharmacy Award” and with Pharmasave Ontario’s 2013 “People Leadership Award”. Mark is also heavily involved in continuing education for pharmacy and other medical professions. He lectures as a consultant for the pharmaceutical industry and other community groups speaking on a wide range of pharmacy and medical related topics. All of Mark’s work outside of the pharmacy was recognized by being awarded the “Health is a Community Affair Award” in 2013 and being named Memorial University School of Pharmacy’s 2014 “Alumni of the Year”. Most recently Mark has become a vocal advocate on the dangers of fentanyl abuse and other opioid addiction. At Westboro Pharmasave he has developed and implemented a program of fentanyl patch return to help curve diversion of this deadly drug to the streets which has received significant local and national attention. Mark’s “respect first” approach to addiction treatment has lead him and his team to open Respect Rx Pharmasave, in conjunction with Recovery Ottawa a newly formed Centre of Excellence for the Treatment of Addiction and Mental Health. Mark continues to treat addiction at the ground level at his pharmacies and as a newly appointed member of the National Advisory Council on Prescription Drug Misuse through the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse and serves on an Overdose Task Force with Ottawa Public Health. All of this work in addiction prevention and treatment lead to Mark winning a prestigious national pharmacy “Commitment to Care” award in 2014. 10:00 AM Baronet Ballroom Speaker’s name Biography to come 11:15 AM Baronet Ballroom Kamran Nizar, BScPharm Kamran Nisar graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in 1995 with a Pharmacy Degree and began his community practice in small rural community, Meteghan, Nova Scotia. In 1997, Kamran joined Walmart pharmacy as a staff pharmacist in New Glasgow. Since then, Kamran has held different roles at Walmart including Pharmacy Manager, District Manager of Professional Services, Special Projects Manager and Talent Sourcing Manager for Eastern Canada. In 2012, Kamran joined Target as a franchise Field Operations Leader for Atlantic Canada and the Ottawa Region. Kamran has been an active board member for the Pharmacy Association of Nova Scotia (PANS) since 2002 and has served as PastPresident. In the fall of 2006, Kamran was appointed to the Canadian Pharmacists Association’s task force on the Blueprint for Pharmacy and in 2007 was appointed to the Financial Viability & Sustainability working group. In 2008, Kamran was awarded the PANS Distinguished Service Award. In 2008, he was appointed to the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists methadone working group. Since 2011, Kamran has been a Council Member on the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists and is currently serving as President. 2015 SPEAKERS 12:00 PM Baronet Ballroom Warren Meek , BScPharm, RPh, FFIP, President C7 Consulting Limited Warren Meek is a practicing community pharmacist in Nova Scotia Canada, an Executive Committee member for the Community Pharmacy Section of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and an experienced member of the Boards of provincial, national and international pharmacy organizations. He has participated in various inter-professional, pharmacy practice, and pharmacy policy research, from cardiovascular health, to pharmaceutical care and collaborative pharmacy practice. Warren is well traveled and has a comprehensive understanding of pharmacy practice issues in different countries, gained through his participation in FIP, and his volunteer activities in Africa. He has presented to and chaired the " Finding the humanitarian face of pharmacy " breakfast sessions at the FIP Congress for several years.
