Florence
Materials:
There are four choices of yarn for the strawberries.
Oddments of Rowan yarn in:
• Cotton glace in shade 741 ‘poppy’, and 812 ‘ivy’
• 4ply cotton shade 132 ‘bloom’ and 135 ‘fennel’
• 4ply soft shade 374 ‘honk’ and 367 ‘leafy’
• Cashcotton 4 ply shades 920 ‘red hot’ and shade
914 ‘watermelon’.
Pair 3.25mm needles
Pair 3mm needles
You can also knit the strawberries in red or green
DK yarn using 4mm needles, for a bigger strawberry!
Big Strawberry
Using red in your chosen yarn and 3.25mm needles (4mm if using DK), cast on 3sts.
Row 1: kfb, kfb, k1 (5sts)
Row 2: (p1, k1) twice, p1
Row 3: (kfb) to end (10sts)
Row 4: (p1, k1) to end.
Row 5: (k1, p1) to end.
Row 6: as row 4
Row 7: as row 5
Row 8: as row 3 (20sts)
Row 9: as row 4
Row 10: as row 5
Row 11: as row 3 (40 sts)
Row 12: as row 4
Row 13: as row 5
Row 14: as row 4
Row 15: as row 5
Row 16: (k2tog, p2tog, k2tog, p1, k1) repeat to
end.
Row 17: k1, (p1, k1, p1, sl 1, k1, psso) to last 4 sts,
(p1, k1) twice (21 sts)
Row 18: (k1, p1) to last st, k1
Row 19: (k2tog, p2tog, k1, p1) repeat to last 3 sts,
k2tog, p1.
Cut yarn leaving a long thread for sewing up, and
thread yarn through remaining stitches, draw up
and fasten off. Sew side seam up using flat stitch
or mattress stitch, leaving an opening for stuffing.
Stuff and then sew up opening.
Green top:
Using green in your chosen yarn and 3mm needles,
cast on 6 sts
Cast off 5 sts
Turn and cast on 8 sts, cast off 8 sts
Turn and cast on 4 sts, cast off 4 sts
Turn and cast on 3 sts, cast off 3 sts
Turn and cast on 6 sts, cast off 6 sts
Turn and cast on 9 sts, cast off 9 sts
Turn and cast on 5 sts, cast off 5 sts
Fasten off remaining st.
Join first leaf to last leaf to make a circle. There
will be a hole in the centre. To close the hole,
oversew around the circle and pull tight.
Make the centre spikey bit:
Pick up and knit a st in the centre of the top by
inserting needle into a loop from both sides of the
top and knit together to make one st. Cast on 5 sts.
Then cast off and fasten off. Join cast on and cast
off edges by over-sewing and pull tight to make a
firm spike. Fasten off.
Sew the top onto the strawberry.
If you wish, you can embellish the strawberry by
sewing tiny stitches all over using thin golden
thread.
Abbreviations:
k2tog=knit 2 sts together
psso=pass slipped stitch over
Kfb=knit into the front and back of stitch (thus making one
extra stitch)

Florence tea cosy
Materials:
5mm needles (tension 17-19sts/23-25 rows to 10cm sq)
One ball of Aran weight pure wool yarn in red
Oddments of Aran weight pure wool yarn in green
Oddments of Aran weight yarn in mustard
To fit: 50cm diameter teapot, height 17cm to top of lid
Abbreviations:
k2tog=knit 2 sts together
skpo=slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over
Ss (slip stitch) = Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over
and draw up through both loops on your hook.
Sc (single crochet) = insert hook into indicated stitch.
Yarn over and draw up a loop. There will be two loops on
your hook. Yarn over and draw through both loops on
your hook.
Tea cosy (make 2 pieces: A and B)
Leaves (make 10):
Cast on 42sts using 5mm needles and red Aran yarn. Knit Make a chain 9 stitches long. Turn and work ss into first
one row. Starting with a knit row (RS), work 34 rows in
2 loops, sc into next 5 loops and ss into final 2 loops.

Turn and repeat. Fasten off. One end will be thinner than
the other. This is the point of the leaf. Attach leaves

evenly around the edge of the top of the strawberry,
where green area and red area meet.
Row 1: k5, (k2tog, skpo) to last 5sts, k5
Row 2: p5, cast off centre 16sts, p5
Leave stitches on a holder.
Embroider four rows of mustard yellow pips onto the tea
cosy using French knots (spaced about 5 stitches apart),
and sew the two bottom 3cm of the sides of the tea cosy
together using mattress stitch
To make up
Graft the 5sts from left hand
side of piece A to 5sts from right hand side of piece B.
Then repeat for the other side. This joins the pieces together, leaving a large hole in the centre to crochet the
top into.
French Knots: Bring the thread out at the required position, hold the
thread down where it emerges with the left thumb and encircle the
thread twice with the needle (see A). Still holding the thread firmly with
your thumb, twist the needle back to the starting point and insert it
close to where the thread first emerged (not in the exact place or it will
simply pull back through). Pull the needle through to the back, leaving a
small knot on the surface, as shown, or pass on to the position of the
next stitch as at B.
Using a 4mm crochet hook and green yarn, pick up and sc
along inside of top of tea cosy pieces. Work one round.
For the next round, sc into two out of every three loops.
On the following round sc into every other loop. Continue in this way, until the circle is practically joined, then
work into every stitch for the next three rounds, creating
a small tube to represent the stalk of the strawberry.
Join at the top and fasten off.
