Hours of Operation Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. President’s Message By Sharon Becker I would like to thank every volunteer that donated items for auction, baked items for the bake sale, and/or volunteered their time to ensure the success of the 2014 Boo Bash. Joann With, the Boo Bash Co-Chair, and Phyllis Gannon dedicated an extraordinary amount of time to plan and execute the event. Thanks also to all of our vendors for their support of our shelter, and the members who patronized the event. As of now, we made over $1800 and we are still waiting for the final tally on the Parklane fundraiser! If you have not already had an opportunity to participate in our annual Tree of Lights fundraiser by purchasing a Christmas bulb or personalized ornament to honor or memorialize your pet(s), you still have a couple more weeks to do so. The bulbs and ornaments will be hung on one of the two trees that decorate the shelter throughout the holiday season. You can obtain information about the Tree of Lights at the shelter’s office or by calling 813-645-2273. As always, your continued support is greatly appreciated! Membership renewal letters, which we hoped to have in the mail by now, have been unavoidably delayed. 2014 members should receive their renewal reminder letters sometime this month. We apologize for the delay. The annual membership period runs January 1st through December 31st of each calendar year, and we offer two membership levels: Premium and Basic. The $50 premium membership includes a C.A.R.E. t-shirt, C.A.R.E. car magnet, and voting rights, while the $35 basic membership includes the C.A.R.E. car magnet, and voting rights. We hope all of our members will renew their memberships, as well as encourage their family and friends to join. If anyone has organizational skills that they are willing to share with C.A.R.E., we are in need of an Administrative Program Manager. For personal reasons, the current volunteer handling the position is unable to continue devoting the necessary time required by the job. She is looking for someone to assume the position’s responsibilities in a graduated manner, as she is willing to provide guidance for as long as necessary. Anyone interested, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected]. Happy Holidays and may this season bless our homeless pets with forever homes! On the Cover: Mack C.A.R.E. Pictures by Marlene Greenberg Mack is an adorable three month old terrier mix with the most heart melting eyes. Mack was found as a stray in Apollo Beach and brought to C.A.R.E. in hopes of finding him a forever family. Like most puppies, Mack is very active and will need training, but he is also very bright, affectionate and receptive to instruction. He loves playing with toys, especially if the toys are shared with people! Mack would be the perfect addition to an active family, preferably with a fenced yard as he will grow into a medium to large dog. Stop by today! 3 Tales From The Bark Side: Things to Keep in Mind Throughout the Holiday Season By Terri Latronica, APDT, CPDT-KA Try to keep your pet’s routine as normal as possible. Make sure to walk, feed and exercise your pet as close to their normal schedule as possible. If your dog is the excitable or anxious type, he might benefit from an over-the-counter remedy, such as Rescue Remedy, to help keep him calm and relaxed. Ask your veterinarian about his or her recommendations, as well as how much you should use and how often. Comfort Zone DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) can also help maintain your dog's calm demeanor. DAP mimics the effects of a pheromone emitted by nursing female dogs, thought to calm the puppies. It can be delivered through a wall diffuser (similar to an air-freshener plug-in); a special collar impregnated with the substance, or can be directly sprayed on bedding or a bandana worn by your dog. Holiday Décor - Pet Safety Issues Holiday trappings help to maintain the merry mood, but can be fraught with dangers for your dog. Here are some things to watch out for: Christmas Trees & Holiday Décor: Tinsel, popcorn strands, and other garlandlike decorations can cause serious internal injuries if ingested, and these are just the kinds of things that curious dogs can't resist. The ribbons, string, and other wrapping accessories found on gifts can be very problematic as well. These can lead to choking or strangulation for a curious puppy or kitten. All Christmas trees should be firmly anchored to the wall or ceiling to prevent it from being toppled by an inquisitive pooch. Cats and kittens love to climb your tree and find it hard to resist the ornaments. If you can't avoid all these things, try encircling your Christmas tree and gift display with an exercise pen to keep your dog away while still allowing you to enjoy your holiday cheer. Water at the base of natural trees can contain anti-freeze and other preservatives that are dangerous to your pets. The water can also contain harmful bacteria, which can cause diarrhea. Candles can be attractive because of their smell, taste and texture. Make sure they are perched on high shelves out of Rover's reach! Never leave a lit candle unsupervised as they are easily knocked over and quickly become a fire hazard. Keep wires and batteries out of your pet’s reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus. Ornaments, both glass and plastic, can cause C.A.R.E.’s Critter Chronicles potential hazards. Obviously the glass ornaments can cause minor to severe cuts and plastic ornaments can cause choking hazards, as well as the possibility of an intestinal blockage. While many snow globes are still made of glass, others can be found in chewable plastic with plastic bases. Chewed plastic shards from broken globes can be life threatening. Many globes also add an anti-freeze-like substance to the water inside to slow the movement of the snow inside, so presents a double danger! Holly when ingested can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal and cardiovascular problems. Many lilies can cause kidney failure in cats if ingested. Opt instead for silk or plastic flowers. Toys: Be sure to pick toys that are basically indestructible. Kongs and Nylabones are good options for your dog. Cats can enjoy balls (select one that is too big to swallow) and catnip toys. Do not use yarn or string as they may ingest these causing a blockage and possible surgery. Other interactive cat toys are fun for your pet and you to play together! days. Move their bed, crate, and water bowls to a quiet location where your pet can retreat to its own safe haven. No guests allowed! Have a SAFE and HAPPY HOLIDAY! Terri Latronica is the owner, operator of Tender Touch Training, one of the Tampa Bay’s most successful dog training schools, with over 30 years of training experience. The Tender Touch way focuses on positive reinforcement, giving you and your dog a rewarding and happy learning experience. For additional information or class schedules, call Boyette Animal Hospital at 813-671-3400. Bree, Cooper, & Tucker Dogs and kids don't always mix! Holiday gatherings can be very over-stimulating for dogs and kids alike, so never leave the dog alone with any little people, even his own kids. An adult who knows when your dog needs a break should strictly supervise interactions between the dog and kids. Guests: Make sure your guests know not to feed your dog from the table. Lots of fatty tidbits handed out by well-meaning visitors can also lead to a dangerous bout of pancreatitis or intestinal upset. If your friends can't help but offer your dog a treat (who can resist), have a portioned supply of his special treats or even his kibble on hand that guests can use instead. Be sure to keep unattended alcoholic drinks where pets cannot get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill or may even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure. Be sure to keep chocolate and anything with xylitol away from your dog, as these are harmful if ingested. Make sure all medications are stored out of reach of your pets at ALL times as they can pose a health risk. Be sure to remind guests staying with you to keep their meds sealed and packed away! A Quiet Retreat: Give your pet a space of their own where they can get away from the hubbub of the holi- KIWI’s Quotes May your days be merry, Your heart be light, Your holiday happy, And your season bright! ~ Author Unknown Maybe Christmas he thought, doesn’t come from a store, Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more. ~ The Grinch, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” by Dr. Seuss Celebrate the happiness that friends are always giving, Make everyday a holiday and celebrate just living. ~ Amanda Bradley 4 Grape and Raisin Poisoning in Dogs By Sarah Hilario, DVM Growing up with a dog and several cats, I never considered grapes or raisins to be a threat to our pets’ health. My family’s dog loved vacuuming everything off the kitchen floor, and she never developed any health problems from the occasional grape ingestion. It wasn’t until veterinary school that I learned of the potential threat for poisoning from grapes and raisins. Cats generally will not eat these fruits, and therefore their risk of toxicity is much lower. Some dogs can eat them with no ill effects, while others will go into sudden kidney failure that can be fatal. Unfortunately, there is no test to detect whether or not a dog will be poisoned by consuming grapes. Because of this risk it is recommended to never let your dog consume grapes, raisins or even grape juice. We don’t know which dogs are susceptible to poisoning or how many grapes are needed to cause kidney failure. Seek veterinary care immediately if you suspect that your dog has consumed any grapes or raisins. If early intervention is not performed, the prognosis for survival is lower for dogs that are vulnerable to grape poisoning. Over time these symptoms may develop: vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. Their kidneys may be irreversibly damaged by the time illness occurs and treatment is pursued. The decision on whether or not to treat a dog for grape poisoning can be difficult due to so many unknowns. However, this decision is best made with your veterinarian and it is always better to err on the side of caution. Typically your veterinarian will first administer a drug to cause your dog to vomit. This will remove any grapes still in the stomach. Second, activated charcoal will be given in an attempt to bind with any remaining toxin to prevent its absorption into the body. Third, an intravenous catheter will be placed in your dog’s forearm and fluids will be given for up to three days to help protect and flush the kidneys. Blood work is performed periodically to check on how the kidneys are functioning. If kidney values are normal after three days, no further treatment is required and the chance of continued illness is very low. Remember that just because a food is safe for people it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is safe for our beloved pets. If you are unsure about what human foods can be safely given as snacks, ask your veterinarian. C.A.R.E.’s Critter Chronicles 6 We have Forever Homes! C.A.R.E. Adoption News Cats During October, four of our C.A.R.E. cats found their forever homes! First to leave us was Mollie, the mostly white (with a little black) Minx mommy to four kittens. She did a great job raising her brood and deserved a home of her own. Next out the door was Dory, one of Nellie's black and white lap cats. Two days later, he was followed out the door by his brother, Lenny, another black and white lap cat who sported a cute little black goatee. We know they are keeping laps warm in their own homes now. Last but definitely not least to leave was Pretty Boy, the “Critter Chronicles” cover boy for August. This 6-year-old male model had been returned to C.A.R.E. due to his previous owner's move to assisted living, where he was not allowed. He now has received another forever home of his own. Congratulations to all of you. Enjoy the holidays in your new homes!! Dogs During October eight of our canine residents found forever homes. What a great way to celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! Although we will miss each of them, we are ecstatic that they have forever families. Socks, the soft and cuddly Shih Tzu that would do back flips for belly rubs has found a forever home where he will always have a lap to cuddle into. Lucy, the Papillon mix, who doubled as the shelter’s kiss monster, now has a forever family to shower her affection upon. Weim, the beautiful gray Weimaraner, now has a family and home she shares with five other Weimaraners! Big Mike, the boxer mix, was adopted by a loving couple who adore big dogs and their sloppy dog kisses. Big Mike, whose name is now Boots, lives in the same neighborhood as one of the CARE volunteers who promises to say “hi” periodically for us. Diesel, the loveable Rottweiler, was also adopted by a couple who love rambunctious big guys that give sloppy dog kisses! Diesel and his new forever family won an adoption basket donated by Dog Gone Holistic, filled with goodies in celebration of National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Diesel’s new mom said that they never won anything. Guess Diesel is their new good luck charm. Frankie, aka Mr. Zoom Zoom, the sweet, playful and highly energetic miniature Pug Chihuahua mix, was adopted by volunteers who are looking forward to years of cuddles. Herbie the Love Bug, the Shih Tzu Poodle mix, was adopted by a family who could not wait to lavish belly rubs on him and be covered in messy doggie kisses! And last, but not least, on October 31st, Squeaky the 40 lb. black Lab Terrier mix, who thought he was a lap puppy, now has a family to cuddle and play with. Squeaky was adopted by Tina and Dusty Ashton, who won the other National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month adoption basket. We would like to thank Dog Gone Holistic and all of the individual donors that made it possible to provide special adoption bags for each dog adopted during October in honor of National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Dog Gone Holistic sponsored the event and provided holistic food, treats and discount coupons for each adoption bag, as well as a large gift basket, which was part of the month-end prize drawing for all dog adopters. Although National Adopt a Shelter Dog and Cat Months only occur once a year, please try to spread the word about the plight of homeless dogs and cats year round. C.A.R.E.’s Critter Chronicles 14 Dog Etiquette Tips to Help Dog Owners By Joanne Rice Making sure our canine companions mind their manners at home and in public is our responsibility as pet parents. By observing these guidelines, you and your dog will avoid unsafe and unsavory situations. The following tips offer basic principles for dog and owner etiquette. At Home • For the safety and security of your dog, neighbors and passersby, your unsupervised dog should always stay on your property. If your dog is left alone, keep him in a safe location where he can neither do harm nor be harmed. • Encourage your dog to toilet in designated areas. If he leaves a mess on your neighbor’s lawn, clean it up right away. • Do not allow your dog to bark uncontrollably at or jump on visitors. • If your dog is a nuisance barker, keep him indoors when you’re not at home. If he barks when you are at home, learn ways to manage his barking to help you enjoy a quieter home. • Keep your dog off of tables or countertops where food is prepared or served. Besides the risk of his getting sick from eating foods that are not good for him (such as chocolate), you run the risk of picking up germs his paws may have left behind. In Public • Keep your dog under control when outdoors by keeping him on a leash or under voice control. Even if your dog is off leash in an approved area, supervise his whereabouts and behavior at all times. • Always supervise your dog when around children. If you are unable to watch him, put him in his crate or another safe place away from the children. Children are three times more likely than adults to be bitten by a dog (of any breed); kids under the age of 15 are the most at risk of being bitten. • Pick up after your dog. Keep clean-up bags with you at all times for doggy messes, no matter where they occur. • If you have a dog that drools, keep a towel handy to clean up his slobber on people or things. • When meeting hikers or runners on a trail, step to the side to give them space to get by you. • Make sure your dog is invited by the host before bringing him to a party, an outdoor gathering or even a picnic. • Supervise greetings between your dog and another dog or a person: o Even if your dog is very friendly, do not let him approach every person you meet. Not everyone likes or is comfortable with dogs. o When meeting a stranger, avoid putting tension on the leash, which may put your dog on alert to be wary. Keep an eye on your dog’s body language, but stay relaxed. o If a stranger wants to pet your dog, tell him to let your dog approach him, rather than having him approach your dog. o If your dog seems uncomfortable with greeting another dog or person, never force the meeting. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Practicing proper dog etiquette is always appreciated by everyone you and your dog encounter. Not only does it make you and your dog look good, but neighbors and guests will more readily enjoy his company knowing you have your dog under control. You can plan now for the care of your family pet by dealing with the possibility that you may not always be available to provide for them. C.A.R.E. has prepared a booklet entitled “Just In Case” which is available free to pet owners who want to assure themselves that they have planned ahead. We also recognize that the future needs of C.A.R.E. need to be considered. Accordingly, we established The Legacy Circle for those who want to assure that our facility will always be here to assist. We would be pleased to work with you and your legal representative to help put in place the best ways to accomplish your goals. Please stop in or call for a copy of the booklet, Tuesday – Saturday 10 am to 3 pm or we can be reached at 813-645-2273. Maybe that's why she likes to sleep in high places like on the high boy dresser or the top of the fridge. Ashton came a week later to be a friend. Katie was not amused. So they didn't get along for a few days. Just when I was ready to give up, I saw them sitting together watching a gecko on the patio. Now Katie they get along fine. Ashton has a new name, "Quincy". It fits him as he is quizzical and explores everything. He has his favorite rag rug which he rolls around on, as well as sleeps on. He "helps" open the vertical blinds by pulling on the cords with me, then rolling around under the blinds as they open or close. He has a cloth ball he carries around for security. Katie helps me make the bed by jumping at the sheets and spread as I try to get them in place. Both do their job of stalking the chameleons and geckos that climb on the windows in the sun room, as well as keeping an eye on the water birds by the lake. When I'm watching TV on the recliner Quincy lays on the foot rest while Katie sits on top of the recliner back. I don't need an alarm clock as they both remind me when it is time for breakfast. They have added a lot of joy and excitement to the house! Thank you ~ Patrick Frye P.S. that's Quincy's rug and ball behind Katie. She seems secure enough without such things. Lucy is doing great. We adopted her in June and she's 7.5 months old now. She loves all people and really loves playing with her cat big sister (adopted from CARE six years ago!). One of her favorite things is to lie in a chair on the screenedin lanai and watch birds, as well as wait for unsuspecting lizards. She is truly a joy and we love her very much! I have included a picture I took today, of her cuddled up with me on the couch. Thanks for all you all do at CARE, you guys are the best!! ~ Sarah Gauta Lark We are quite happy. I changed Deja’s name to Lark as in “happy as a lark.” Lark has a new best friend - an albino Siberian husky named Babe. I think they are going to start their own Diesel is doing GREAT. You will see excavating business. he loves his new yard and especially ~ Stephen Sawyer the couch! In the second picture, he is actually watching TV. We love him very Have you adopted one of our rescues? If you would like to submit an update on a C.A.R.E. rescue, please send the much and are so happy we were able to pictures and update to [email protected]. Be sure to include contact information so that we can follow-up adopt him. Thanks! ~ Kristen Tanner with you, if necessary. C.A.R.E.’s Critter Chronicles 18 Cat Chat By Eileen Dunnington Pictures by Judy Martin Torti (pictured at right) says that she loves to perch up high and watch the other cats playing. Sometimes she likes to come down and join in the fun, and will definitely come down from her lofty abode when she hears the crinkle sound made by a bag of treats! Ollie wants everyone Jenny joins her brother, Ollie, in a request for a forever home. She says she knows that she acts somewhat shy, but told me that she would try her best to change if given the op-purr-tunity of a new home! to know that he would love to find a forever home like his mom and most of his siblings have done, and thinks that a new home would be a great holiday present. 2 P 2 Or 813-657-9797 GBCC 2014 Small Business of the Year Cat Litter Box Service Waste is Double-Bagged & Hauled Away C.A.R.E.’s Critter Chronicles Licensed, Insured One Time, Weekly and Bi- Weekly Service “Dooing” Business Since 2003 19 PRSRT STD US POSTAGE PAID TAMPA FL PERMIT 1741 1528 27th Street S.E. We have adopted over 2000 animals and have spayed and neutered over 4000 in our discount clinic. We are unique in the sheltering world as our animals do not spend their time at C.A.R.E. living in cages. Dogs are outside during the day and cats live in three open bays.
