Dear Parents and Caregivers
Thank you so much to Blake from the Studio who has donated his old
scooter to school, so someone who does not have a scooter now has one to
play on. That is very kind and thoughtful of you Blake. You are showing our
3Rs - respecting others.
Scooter days will now have to be Monday, Thursday and
Friday, NOT Wednesday, as we found they are interfering with the
basketball and netball practices which we have to have on
Wednesday lunchtimes!
The number of digital devices in schools around the world are growing, as
Boards of Trustees, teachers and families realise the potential they bring for
engaged learning. Our long term aim is for our students to have access to a
device whenever it suits what they are learning - and this can be a lot of a
day. Sharing devices (lap tops, Chromebooks, iPads etc) is sometimes
frustrating for children (and teachers!) This year our BOT have committed to
trialing a class where every child has access to a device whenever they
need it (R11, our 1 to 1 Chromebook class). The Board have bought enough
Chromebooks for this class, and they remain school property (so cannot be
taken home.) Some families have purchased a Chromebook that their child
can use in class but also take home. Our Year 1 and 2s are using iPads in
class. While we do not have a policy yet of everyone needing a device for
their learning we are able to give our families the opportunity to purchase a
device to be used at school - when it is paid for it can come home too.
FAQ...What is a Chromebook? A Chromebook links to the internet through
the Google Chrome operating system and does not save
documents as a 'microsoft office' like programme. Everything is
stored in the cloud. A range of fabulous apps are accessed
from the Google cloud too. You have access to your documents
from any computer. Our students are using their Chromebooks
to write, design and share documents to learn, create and share the aspect
of the curriculum they are studying.
Why an iPad? iPads address a variety of learning styles and create
interactive classroom environments, they engage the children, are very
portable and open up the world of learning from anywhere - not just in the
classroom. They are more suited to younger children with their 'swipe'
features.
This term we are able to offer parents the same purchase price for a
Chromebook or iPad that the school has access to. (The price does not
include a cover or insurance). When full payment has been made the device
can go home in the evenings and weekends.

come in and see Raewyn Harnden and her class in room 11.
SWSWAG hui (South Wairarapa Super Whanau Advisory Group)
In 2014 Ngati Kahungunu launched their iwi education plan for the
Wairarapa. Since then the iwi has hosted two hui per term for schools and
whānau in the South Wairarapa.
These SWSWAG hui (South Wairarapa Super Whanau Advisory Group)
have included teachers and whānau from all of the early childhood, primary
and secondary schools in the region.
They have all been a great chance to get together to hear from iwi leaders
such as Lynette Bradnam and Maxine Hemi and just to talk together about
how we can work together to support the learning of all Māori students.
The next hui is on the 2nd of June at the Hurunui-O-Rangi Marae in
Gladstone. We have been invited to be part of the Tangata Whenua, and
for us and the tamariki of Ākonga Māori to help and be part of the pōwhiri.
This is our ‘school marae’...we state this in our school pepeha, so our
support and involvement in the pōwhiri and hui is very important to us. The
pōwhiri starts at 5.30pm, so the tamariki/ whanau would need to be at the
marae at 4.30pm….more details to follow.
To help the marae with the pōwhiri and catering I need to let them know the
numbers of whānau who will be coming. Could you let me know that you
are coming either by returning the slip below, or replying to this by emailing,
or phoning me by the end of this week. At some of the hui, there has been a
competition to see which school brings along the most whanau – wouldn’t it

We have begun Pacific Island Dance at school, on Monday lunchtimes,
with the expertise of Maryanne Gulliver. All students are welcome to
attend. A big thank you to Maryanne for volunteering her time.

your iPad / iPod / tablet. If you want to be first to get updates from school

YUMMY FRUIT. We are collecting stickers and bar codes from YUMMY
fruit. All stickers go towards helping us get free sports gear for our school.

BOT meeting tonight Tuesday 26 May in the staffroom 7pm.
Do you know we have a brilliant After School Care facility at our school
hall 3-6pm every day? Irene and Dolly run 'Hart 4 Kids', a very well
organised and structured programme to keep your children safe and
occupied when school has finished. Subsidies are available. Contact them
on 379 7821 or 027 716 5652 or pop in after school to see them and find
out more.
Do you have any unwanted, old but usable (and safe)
tools which we could use as set up for our planned 'Man
Shed'? This is going to be a space where our senior boys
can go to make items while being supervised. Anything
gratefully received! Please bring any donations to the office
or to Lesley Kennedy, the co ordinator.
SPORTS ROUND UP!
Carterton School Cross Country - This annual event is being held next
week, Wednesday 3 June. The postponement date is Friday 5 June. The
course runs through our school grounds and also through our east side
neighbours' property, The Pattersons' field. The event will start at 10.00am.
Students are advised to run in shoes and to wear house colours. Those
runners(Years 3-8) finishing in the first 12-15 places,(depending on time
between places ) will then compete in the South Wairarapa Cross Country
event held out at Kahutara School on Wednesday 17 June.
Come along next Wednesday and support our tamariki, demonstrating their
strength, endurance and determination in our Cross Country race.
Some of our senior cross country runners will be lucky enough to have
the opportunity for some off site cross country training with PC Dean
Adams in the week between our school and inter school cross country
events. They will go to Fensham Reserve for two sessions, Mon 8th &
Thurs 11th June 1.45-3pm. If you are able to come along with a car (and
join in the run if you would like to!) please contact us at the office.
Thursday next week we are taking part in a Yr 7&8 Ki-o-rahi tournament.
We have had training sessions over the past few weeks. Good luck team!
Basketball Results: The Year 8’s won by more than 20 points against St
Mary’s. On court play was a-mazing! The Year 7’s had a hard game
against the top team of the league. Adults commented they played right to
the end of the game with heart and showed great fair play. Special thanks
to Jane Cadwallader and Josh Hunter for your help with training and all of
our wonderful supporters.
School Lunches – available again from today Tuesday 26
May. Welcome back Francelle, Margaret & the team! Lunches can be
ordered each Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.
Friday is sausage sizzle day - $1.50 per sausage in bread.
Robi Combs – The school is missing two Robi combs. If you have them
at home please return them to the school office.
No Music Lessons this week. Mrs Ashby will be back next week.

COMMUNITY NEWS:
Makoura College open evening – Wednesday 17 June at 5.30 pm in the
Makoura College Library. Year 7 & 8 students, caregivers and community
members welcome!
WAIConnect is a joint project between the three Wairarapa District Councils
to bid for new government funding for extending the broadband and mobile
network across the Wairarapa. The WAIConnect project team, made up of
staff from the three District Councils, has until 3 July to pull together the
Wairarapa bids. The government is prioritising funding for those areas
where there will be social and economic gains for the region, as well as
maximising the number of people who will benefit from the extended
network.
As part of the bid process the WAIConnect Team is very keen to find out
just how bad (or good!) internet connections are in homes and businesses
around the region, and so have designed a website to test internet
connection speeds. We would like to invite your pupils, and their families, to
use the internet test site to register internet speeds during different times of
the day and week, so we can gain a more accurate picture of the robustness
of the current telecommunications network.
