These services include home-delivered and congregate meals, caregiver support, communitybased assistance, preventive health services, elder abuse prevention, and much more. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Get into the Act,” to focus on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive difference in the lives of others. The theme also reflects on the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Older Americans Act into law in July 1965. Since that time, the Act has provided a nationwide aging services network and funding that helps older adults live By promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and inclusivity, more Americans than ever before can “Get into the Act.” While CASA of Madison County provides needed volunteer services to older adults yearround, Older Americans Month offers an opportunity to emphasize how older adults can access the home-and community-based services they need to live independently in their communities. Be a part and “Get into the Act” today with CASA’s multiple volunteer opportunities. Call Jessica at 256-533-7775 or email [email protected] to learn about CASA’s current needs. CASA Community Garden MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! The garden is in need of volunteers to help plant, to help weed, and to help keep the garden growing. The hours have been extended and more days and times will be added for the upcoming summer months. You can check our calendar on our website at casamadisoncty.org. These days, you will find lots of materials for building a number of new raised beds. You Made a Difference! Information Below is from 2013-2014 Frequently Asked Question #13 What kind of home repairs do CASA volunteers provide? Answer: We provide very minor home repairs, and it all depends on volunteers’ skills and availability. As requests are made by clients, CASA staff track the requests and send out the needs to interested volunteers. If we have a volunteer able to provide the service, the staff member will notify the client and set up the work to be done. However, many of the needs go un-met due to the limited number of volunteers. Loneliness and social isolation may be as much of a threat to living a long life as obesity, according to a new study. Researchers identified more than 3 million people who took part in a variety of trials that looked at the association between social factors and mortality. The average age of the participants was 66. Objective and subjective data about loneliness, social isolation and living alone were collected. Participants were then followed for about seven years. The results showed the likelihood of death increased by 26% for reported loneliness, 29% for social isolation, and 32% for living alone. The lead author says the effect of these social factors is comparable to obesity, which public health takes very seriously.
