COMING INTO FASHION
A Century of Photography at Condé Nast
15 June – 8 September 2013, Floor 3 and 4
Fashion photography – glamorous,
provocative, beautiful, accomplished and
magical – has been associated with some
of the most famous names in the history of
the medium since the early years of the 20th
century. The great American photographer
Edward Steichen took what were probably
the first fashion photographs in 1911. Since
then it has become a unique platform for
experimentation, balanced between commerce
and creativity, recording the Zeitgeist and
capturing individual dreams and desires.
a unique opportunity to see the work of over
eighty photographers right at the outset of
their careers.
This exhibition has been organised by the
Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography,
Minneapolis/Paris/Lausanne, in collaboration
with City Art Centre, Edinburgh.
The legendary publisher Condé Nast
recognised this very early on and created
a distinctive style for his magazines,
elevating haute couture and turning fashion
photography into an art form. With his keen
sense for discovering new talents, he found
the best photographers and promoted their
careers, a tradition continued by subsequent
editors and art directors at Condé Nast.
The exhibition shows early work by such
luminaries as Cecil Beaton, Erwin Blumenfeld,
Helmut Newton, David Bailey, Guy Bourdin,
Corinne Day, Mario Testino and Sølve Sundsbø
as it appeared in the pages of Vogue, Glamour
and other Condé Nast publications.
With unprecedented access to the Condé
Nast archives in New York, Paris, London and
Milan, the curator Nathalie Herschdorfer has
gathered original prints, as well as pages from
the actual magazines. The exhibition provides

Fashion, Costume and Dress in Scottish Art
15 June – 29 September 2013, Floor 1 and 2
Dressed to Kill showcases how Scottish artists
have captured fashion, costume and dress
over the years, from the late 17th century
to the present day. The exhibition includes
portrayals of a whole range of different types
of costume, from mundane everyday working
clothes to the most elaborate fashionable
dress. There is an inevitable focus on the
depiction of women and women’s costume but
the exhibition will also look at men’s clothing,
children’s costume, headgear, working clothes
and uniforms.
Central to the exhibition are the City Art
Centre’s two iconic Colourist portraits, J.D.
Fergusson’s The Blue Hat and F.C.B. Cadell’s
The Black Hat, both showing young women
dressed up to the nines in the height of
Edwardian fashion. The exhibition will
also include works by Allan Ramsay, Henry
Raeburn, E.A. Hornel, John Lavery, J.H. Lorimer,
John Duncan, Stanley Cursiter, John Bellany,
Adrian Wiszniewski, David Williams and
Moyna Flannigan.

Fashion Show: An exciting
collaboration by two of the coolest
Scottish designers.
Participants will enjoy a beer and a special tour
of Coming into Fashion and Dressed to Kill.
Howie Nicholsby’s 21st Century Kilts offer a
unique take, and are a fitting homage, to a
traditional Scottish style. A pioneer in the
modern interpretation of the iconic traditional
Scottish garment – the kilt. Original textiles,
ranging from leather, gold and purple denim,
Harris Tweed, camouflage, to Savile Row
suiting fabrics offer something different to
those fond of this age old item taking it away
from a formal piece of clothing and bringing
it into everyday clothing alternative. Howie
launched in 1999 at London Men’s Fashion
Week gathering press and celebrity attention.
Featured in many publications such as V Man,
Condé Nast Traveler, The Herald clients include
– Robbie Williams, Sir Chris Hoy, Lenny Kravitz,
Vin Diesel, Alan Cummings, Brian Cox, Tom
Kitchen and Richard Branson.
Renowned for innovative and intricate garment
structure fused with trademark tailoring, the
Iona Crawford collections are unashamedly
elegant. Silhouette exaggeration, experimental
pattern cutting, contrasting fabric textures,
unorthodox tailoring and masculine style
influences, all create an inimitable, avantgarde yet wearable look. While Iona Crawford
collections are directional and cement a
unique design identity, they consist of earthy
and tonal fabrics of Scottish origin including
cashmere, linen and leather, as well as silks
printed with Iona’s painterly artwork. The
combination and contrast of each element
results in distinctive, innovative collections
which transcend fashions and epitomise
timeless, contemporary style. From Summer
2013, Gleneagles will join the label’s portfolio
of international stockists.

Lectures and Talks
Saturday 3 August at 2pm
Antique Clothes: From the Mundane
to the Glamorous
The history of clothes is a fascinating subject.
Bertha Walker will look at why certain styles
were popular and discuss their embellishment.
This talk will concentrate on ladies costume
from a private collection of costume that
contains pieces from late Victorian to the
70s. From day wear, evening wear, wedding
dresses, underwear and a few accessories to
match. Bring along something to discuss – or
even better, wear it!
The handbag has been one of the most useful
accessories. Like costume it has evolved
over the years according to fashion and its
use. Bertha Walker will discuss her personal
handbag collection, evolved over about ten
years, from the Georgian period to the present
day. People are welcome to bring along their
own vintage bags!
