As chairs of the 2013 McAuley Gala, we wish to welcome you to
this special event. Since being selected as chairs, we have had the
pleasure of working with an extraordinary group of talented individuals dedicated to the mission of Mount Mercy Academy. The
efforts of every individual have contributed to making the Gala an
enjoyable experience for you.
The mission of Mount Mercy Academy is alive and well and the
Gala is your opportunity to share in the continued success of
our school. The spirit of Catherine McAuley was felt by all who
attended gift gathering events for many months leading up to the
Gala. We hope that you will feel the spirit of Catherine McAuley
this evening as you make your own contribution to the continued
success of Mount Mercy Academy. Many individuals worked countless hours to insure the success
of the Gala. Support for our school has come from a long list of
businesses, friends of Mercy, students, parents and alumnae. We
wish to thank every one of you for your endless energy, talent and
contributions in making tonight a success.
We also wish to extend a special thank you to the faculty and staff
of Mount Mercy Academy. Our daughters have benefited a great
deal from your wisdom and dedication. You have furthered that
which we have sought to instill in our daughters at home and,

MASTER OF CEREMONIES
Mike Randall, WKBW Channel 7
Chief Meteorologist Mike Randall covers the weather duties, and he brings you the Exclusive AccuWeather Forecast
every weekday on “Eyewitness News This Morning” from
5-7am and “Eyewitness News At Noon.” Mike has been
with WKBW-TV since August 1983. He is also an AP and
UPI award-winning feature reporter, prior to coming to
WKBW-TV, Mike worked as a Co-Host of “PM Magazine”
at WFSB-TV in Hartford, Connecticut and at WDBJ-TV in
Roanoke, Virginia.
A native of Western New York, Mike is also a professional
actor. He has performed a variety of roles in theatres
around the country and he continues to perform his critically acclaimed, one-man portrayals of Mark Twain &
Charles Dickens. An avid supporter of the Variety Club of
Buffalo, you can see Mike each year on The Variety Club
Telethon for Children’s Hospital. You may also catch Mike
making appearances all year round at fashion shows, auctions, and fund-raisers for numerous charitable organizations across Western New York.
Mike received his Certificate In Broadcast Meteorology
from Mississippi State University. He has earned the Seal
of Approval from The American Meteorological Society
as well as the National Weather Association. A career
highlight for Mike was filling in on ABC’s “Good Morning
America”. Mike and his wife, Kathy, have three sons and
live in North Boston.
Mistress of Ceremonies
Ms. Elizabeth (Starkey ’73) Owens
Elizabeth (Betty) Owens (Starkey ’73), A Certified Oncology Nurse from the Oncology Nurses Certification Corporation, received her BSN from D’Youville College and
her MSN as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Oncology from
University at Buffalo. Recently retired after 33 years, Betty
spent her entire professional career as an oncology nurse at
Roswell Park Cancer Institute where she served most of her
time as the Director of Nursing Education.
Cancer patient care has also extended to Betty’s private life
as well as a 28+ year volunteer for the American Cancer
Society (ACS). Betty has served the ACS in many capacities
over the years, most recently as the Second Vice President
for the Eastern Division for New York & New Jersey and
as a member of the National Volunteerism Business Group
in Atlanta. Betty was awarded the prestigious St. George
National Award from the American Cancer Society in
recognition of outstanding contributions to the Control of
Cancer.
A life- long South Buffalo resident Betty resides with her
husband Bill and since her retirement has returned to
quilting and traveling. You can view her handiwork in a
donated quilt featured as a super silent item for the auction
this evening.

The Rules
general auction
All sales are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on
items except where specified.
To remove items the evening of the auction, you must show a
validated receipt at the door at the time of departure.
Value of items auctioned are donor-stated and are not warranted by Mount Mercy for tax purposes or for general value.
The IRS advises that donations are tax-deductible only for the
amount of the bid in excess of fair market value.
Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services must
be used within one (1) year, on or before April 13, 2014.
All auction items not taken home the night of the McAuley
Gala must be picked up at the Development Office on Monday,
April 15, 2013 between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.
The school will not be open on Sunday, April 14, 2013.
All auction items have been assembled for display and may not
be repackaged in original packaging.
Payment by the successful bidder may be made immediately
following the auction in the form of cash, check, Visa or
MasterCard. Payment in full is required on Saturday, April 13,
2013.

The live auction will begin during dinner and will continue
without interruption until all items have been auctioned.
Doors will open at 5:00 pm in order to give guests the
opportunity to view the items prior to the bidding.
Persons wishing to bid should display his/her bid number
when the auctioneer requests bids.
Certain items will require a minimum starting bid. Mount
Mercy officials reserve the right to withdraw these items from
the auction if the minimum bid is not received.
In the event of a dispute, the auctioneer will act as the final
authority and determine the winning bidder.

SILENT auction
The silent auction will open to bidding at 5:00 pm and end at
7:30 pm. The closing bid circled by the McAuley Gala official
constitutes the winning bid.
All items in the silent auction have bid sheets affixed nearby.
Persons wishing to bid must do so by writing his/her bid number
on the bid sheets. Please press down hard when entering your
bid on the triplicate bid sheets.
Bids are made using the Bidder Identification number printed
on your Auction Night bidder paddle. You may only bid with
the number assigned to you. This number matches your
name in the Auction database for all bidding and purchases
throughout the evening.
Each item in the silent auction has a bid sheet. Each sheet is
divided into a series of incremental bidding steps. Place a bid
by printing your assigned bid number on the appropriate line.
PLEASE PRINT CLEARLY, as illegible bids will be discarded.
Under no circumstances may a bid sheet be removed or earlier
bids crossed out.
Each opening bid must equal or exceed the minimum bid indicated on the bid sheet and you must increase the bid by at least
the next minimum raise indicated.
An item is closed when a bid is placed in the “Guaranteed
Purchase Box” or an Auction official closes the bidding area at
the posted closing time. No further bids will be accepted at that
time. No exceptions allowed!
In the event of a dispute, a Mount Mercy official will act as
the final authority and determine the winning bidder. Such
a decision will be final.
Any bids entered after official closing of an area will not be
recognized.
express check-out
McAuley Gala is pleased to utilize express check-out. Minimize
your wait time at the end of the evening by registering for
Express Check Out. Fill out the express check-out form and
provide a signed blank check made payable to Mount Mercy
Academy or list your credit card information. At the end of the
evening, head to the Express Check-Out table in the dining
hall. Review your final purchase total and then head directly
to Gift Pick-up for your item(s).
Following the Gala you will be mailed a final purchase
statement summarizing your total purchases and any tax
deductible amounts.
