Dear Manhattan CB6 Health and Education Committee and honored guests,
We are pleased to introduce Bellevue Hospital’s Trauma and Injury Prevention Program.
Currently, Bellevue is a Level 1 regional trauma center and treats many of New York City’s injured. The designation
process for trauma centers in New York State is changing and, moving forward, will be based on a verification process
conducted by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Bellevue is seeking a Level I trauma verification status within this
new system. We are currently in the middle of this verification process, which is designed to assist hospitals in the
evaluation and improvement of trauma care and to provide an objective, external review of institutional capability and
performance.
An important part of this process involves community injury prevention initiatives and community outreach with a focus
on the types of injuries we see most. Based on Bellevue’s trauma registry, our goal is to advance three initiatives:
(1) falls – about 45% of all our trauma admissions are falls…
a. falls from standing in older adults
b. falls related to intoxication
c. falls from heights that are work-related (e.g., construction)
(2) traffic-related injuries – 30-35% of our hospital admissions are traffic-related injuries…
a. pedestrians struck by cars or bikes
b. bicyclists struck by cars
c. motor vehicles collisions
(3) alcohol-related injuries
We invite you to help us meet these goals and to assist us in these initiatives. Please email me at
[email protected] about possible partnerships within the community, or call me at
(212) 562-3928 if you know of other ways to assist us with our goals.
Kind Regards,
Dekeya R. Slaughter, BSc(Hons)
