20 Tips to Improve All of Your Sewing

This is a 1 hour presentation of techniques and ideas that will help
sewers to achieve professional results. It covers areas such as
choosing and preparing patterns, pre-shrinking suitable fabrics and
selecting appropriate interfacings. There will be suggestions for
streamlining the sewing process and obtaining a professional finish,
using good pressing techniques and tools. A list of references and
resources will be provided at the end of the workshop.

A fun way of designing your own ‘patch’.
No drawing or design skills are required.
Use 4 or 5 simple stitches to create a
garden patch worked on a hand painted
silk background. Your finished piece can be
mounted in a frame, used as the centre of
a cushion or presented as a birthday card.

An Introduction to Rag Rugging

Association
Learn how to make a simple rag rug, including how to plan and draw
your design. The original form of recycling which uses fabrics from old
clothes, blankets etc, you will make a small sample piece which can
be turned into a mat or used as a panel on a bag or cushion. Suitable
for all levels including children aged 10+

You will appliqué tiny hexagons onto a fabric
background and hand stitch into a sweet
little pincushion. During the workshop
you will learn the techniques of English
Paper Piecing and appliqué, some simple
embroidery stitches and be given lots of
ideas for more hexagon projects. Suitable
for Beginners.

Take French Knitting to a new level by
learning 3 beading techniques developed
by Freda. These can be applied to design 8
different basic necklaces and also be adapted
for fashion and furnishing embellishment –
after that, the sky’s the limit! Have fun and be

will be available from the Braidmakers Workshop stand. Suitable for all

Stitch a beautiful beaded motif on to canvas. Learn the basic
technique and see how the gorgeous “bead soups” kick up your
colourwork and how the textures add scrunch! You will be able to
use your work to embellish jeans, totes, cushions, bags, anything. It is
glamorous, sassy and simple. All levels welcome, including children
aged 12+

Beyond the Basic Pattern: 20 More Sewing Tips
Celia Banks
This 1-hour presentation and demonstration of handy tips and
processes will cover topics such as moving and shaping darts and
fitting waistbands and contoured yokes. There will be overview of
how to quickly attach zips, how to prevent some common sewing
mishaps and things to consider beyond the basic pattern. The session
will include suggestions for making the most of a pattern and ideas for
developing your fashion sewing skills. Celia is an Associate Educator
with the Palmer Pletsch company and specialises in teaching people
to get the best fit from commercial patterns.

Braid some Christmas cheer - decorations to
hang from your tree, a cord to hang a bauble
in your window or to embellish a special
card. Or make a unique napkin ring. In this
class we will start three small projects using
round, flat and spiral braids. The class kit
will include braiding discs, full instructions
and some Christmassy yarns to take home. All levels welcome,
including children.

This is a 2 hour practical workshop during which you will make
samples of a centred, a lapped and an invisible zip. A zipped bag kit
will be provided, together with handouts for future reference. We’ll
be using a fast and foolproof method, without pins or tacking, using
basting tape and Scotch Magic 3M tape. Attendees do need to be
able to use a sewing machine for straight stitching. 2-hour workshop

Craftivism: Make A Mini Protest

A spoonful of craft helps the activism go
down. Hosted by Founder of the Craftivist
Collective, Sarah Corbett who is seen as
the one of the leading spokespeople in the
renaissance of the Craftivism movement.
Craftivism combines activism and craft
and provides a create outlet for people to express their thoughts and
concerns on social injustices in a non-threatening way, provocative
way whilst at the same time ‘Making Change’ one stitch at a time
through their actions! You will learn how to make a Mini Protest
Banner using cross-stitch and hand embroidery methods, explore
and discuss the benefits of craftivism for the maker and viewers
and how it can create change. All participants will take home in a
small bag to continue your craftivism piece at home and become a
craftivist! Practical Project
Create a Winter Scene

Start to make a small picture using a selection of fabrics and my
special piecing technique for making small landscapes. You will learn
how to both piece the picture using flat and textured foundation
piecing and add detail with quilting and embroidery. The picture

this versatile medium, building surfaces and

co-author of ‘How to Be Creative in Textile
Art’ – a popular Batsford title. Suitable for all levels of ability.

doodle your own design then learn how to
transfer your creation to fabric and stitch it
with simple embroidery stitches. You will be
enjoying yourself so much you will forget
that you are learning important design skills
and releasing your creativity. Suitable for
beginners.

Double Knitting for Beginners
Chrissie Day
Double knitting is a technique that enables
the knitter to produce 2 layers of knitting in
1 piece. The technique can produce tubes,
and self-lined accessories, garments. In
this 1.5 hour session, you will learn special
2-colour cast -ons as well as edge stitches
and reversing the designs in the colours
chosen whilst learning how to hold the wools and the working
principles of hidden stranding. Join Chrissie in the first lesson of
Double Knit for Starters with full written instruction to take home and
a charted design written for the Exhibition covering the techniques
you will master in our time together.

Learn the art of free hand machine
embroidery using a lovely Janome sewing
machine and all the equipment and
materials needed to get you started. You
will take home a 5” x 5” square/s that can
be used within a patchwork or used as a patch pocket. Suitable for all
levels of ability.

Illustration techniques can be applied not only to paper but also to fabrics
Using fashion illustration techniques, hand stitching and textile layering
processes and simple tools, you will create a fashion portrait. You will
utilise a range of techniques to build a stylised fashion portrait. You will be
shown how the skills acquired in the workshop can be adapted for other
genre, such as landscapes, cityscapes, animals. Suitable for any level of
ability and children aged 14+

Easy & Fun Sketchbook Skills

You will be given clear and accessible,
step by step instructions of how to create
effective and instant designs, working
directly into a sketchbook using a variety
of media. You will go away with your
sketchbook full of ideas and a head buzzing
with possibilities for personal interpretation. This makes this short
course a must whether your interest is in drawing, designing or in
any aspect of textiles. Suitable for the complete beginner through to
experienced artists.

Digital by Design
Rose Sinclair
How do you transfer designs to fabric, Digital by design, shows
you how you can develop creative designs, using textiles software,
that can then be printed directly to fabrics using a sublimation
printer. You will then transfer the designs using a heat press to
fabrics. Demonstrations and hands on activities will also include
how you can combine textile techniques, using transfer paints with
digital technology. Suitable for intermediate level this is a 1.15 hour
workshop.

Embellishing Quilts

This workshop will give the chance to use different stitches to
decorate crazy patchwork block. You will be able to use traditional
ribbons, buttons, beads, charms, threads, lace as well as non
traditional washers, bolts etc to embellish as much or as little as you
wish. This would be suitable for hand stitching or machine stitching.
To save time the patchwork will be created using fusible wadding as
a base. This means you get to play with the embellishment longer.
Suitable for all skill levels and for children aged 10+. Practical Project

applique techniques using simple stitches
to apply toadstool motifs to a background.
Using upcycled cotton fabrics, felt and

will be precut ready for you to arrange on to the backing fabric, the
whole picture will be lightly padded giving a slightly raised effect.

Ideal for beginners, Jacobean Crewelwork
uses a range of stitches and elements of
shading using wool on linen. Jacobean-style
designs, developed in the 17th Century

on imported Indian chintzes but work
equally well with contemporary designs. This workshop offers an
introduction to this traditional technique and is an excellent starting
point for those who want to go on to develop other techniques.

Jacobean crewel embroidery is an easily
recognisable style of embroidery dating
from the early seventeenth century,
characterised by its Tree of Life designs and
naïve interpretations of fantasy animals,
flowers and fruit. A wide variety of stitches
are used so it is a great way to learn new
stitches. Crewel wool is a lovely thread to use and gives instant
results. Using traditional crewel wools on a neutral fabric, stitch a
sampler of four fundamental stitches in a miniature Jacobean leaf
design. Suitable for beginners and children aged 10+

Make a Funky Felt Brooch

Make a retro inspired “Make do and Mend”
felt brooch using reclaimed and upcycled
vintage fabrics and felt. Decorate the top of
the brooch using felt offcuts and coloured
threads to create your own unique design.
On the bottom layer your will sew a safety
brooch pin. The two layers are then sewn
together incorporating a circle of padding to add rigidity and depth.
During the workshop you will choose the level at which you work,
using simply running stitch or for the more adventurous, blanket
stitch, whip stitch and French knots which you will be taught. An
inspiring selection of brooches will be on display to stimulate your

Masterclass in Double Knitting

In this class we will master reverse
stocking stitch technique which interlocks
your design together because we have
specifically reversed colours on each side
of the piece giving a mirror image. You will
also learn the self colouring edge technique,
different cast on methods, look at dualcoloured work with differing designs on either side, ie Spots and
Strips. You will be shown how to use the technique to give pockets in
garments, learning how to cast off and re-cast on for differing layers.
We’ll also cover reversed stocking stitch a Double Knitting technique
when knitting Fairisle designs with a backing layer. A Fairisle Double
Knitted ski band design written and charted for the Exhibition and
will be yours to take home. To take this Masterclass knitters must
be proficient in dual yarn handling and preferably have done some

We will be using double knitting wool on 4mm needles. To get the
most out of the class you should be able to cast on and work in
stocking stitch i.e. knit a row purl a row. You will leave the class with a
sample of your own.

own birdie brooch, using a great variety of
fabrics! Use the pre-cut design template to
cut out your fabrics, and learn how to stitch
these together to make up your birdie using
a Janome Sewing Machine. We will also
learn a few decorative stitches to finish your birds, and it is then up to
you, if you desire to add any bead etc embellishments…..just let your
bird brains fly! Materials included to make two birdie brooches, with
written instructions to take away with you. The result? Gorgeous
cheery bird brooches, to keep or use as a gift!

The aim of this workshop will be to explore
the creation of hand-stitched, lacy, structured
surfaces without the need for a background
fabric. Different possibilities will be discussed,
explained and demonstrated, using a
selection of embroidery stitches and a method
that Jean has developed in her own recent
work. Students will have the opportunity to experiment and then begin
making a small piece of work that can be finished at home. This workshop
is experimental, but for all levels of ability.

Stumpwork, or raised embroidery, lifts
simple embroidery stitches into three
dimensions. Stumpwork was at its height
during the seventeenth century, but now
we can bring it into the modern world!
Learn how to stitch wire edges onto fabric
to create a cute 3D butterfly with a button
body. The finished project works perfectly added to a picture, or
creates a charming brooch. Suitable for beginners and children aged

Stitch a beaded bezel around a Swarovski
Rivoli using pretty seed beads that enhance
the fancy stone. This technique uses Peyote
stitch and herringbone stitch, and although
no prior knowledge of bead stitching
is required, it will help if you have. Also

Swarovski Crystal Crocheted Cuff
Bracelet

During this half day workshop you will learn
to crochet with beads to make a stunning
cuff-style bracelet that is then further
embellished with Swarovski Crystals. The
bracelet is crocheted using double and
treble crochet and a knowledge of how
to crochet these to stitches is required. You’ll learn how to turn and
keep sides straight to create a rectangle piece, adding bicone crystals
every few rows. The cuff is crocheted with S-Lon thread and further
embellished by sewing on Swarovski Fancy stones, mini-beads and
bicones. Finally a slider fastening is stitched in place. Suitable for
Intermediate level.

dangles to create a pretty design, finishing with an earring fitment

and take home not just a tassel, but the

Tatting: Beaded Scissor Keep Barbara Murdock
This 1.5 hour session will enable tatters,
who have already mastered the original
stitch and can make a ring, to develop new
techniques. A tatted piece is made up of
double stitches each one a larks-head knot.
The stitches are placed in intricate patterns
of chains and rings to make the lace effect
you see. Traditional tatting is done using one shuttle and a ball of
thread, but we will use two shuttles which increases the possibilities
in both form and pattern design. You will make a small motif which
can be used as a scissor keeper using Perle thread. You will learn how
to incorporate beads into the design and how to make split rings thus
avoid having to cut thread and re-join onto work to start a new row.
Suitable for intermediate level.

The Shibori Blues

The patterns achieved through stitching,
clamping, folding and pleating fabric–
combined with the magical blues of a
natural fermentation natural Indigo vat are
endless and the resulting fabrics are to ‘dye
for’, making your work totally unique! This
workshop is suitable for all levels of student,
who will be taught in a structured way. You will prepare and dye 2
sample fabrics (one cotton and one silk) with SHIBORI (the inventive
art of Japanese shaped resist dyeing) and Vivien will share her
knowledge of preparation and maintenance of a natural fermentation
Indigo vat, offering you a sound knowledge and provide a solid
foundation upon which future developments could be made.

Tissue Fitting - Better Fit for Busy People

This is a one-hour practical demonstration and explanation of the
principles and techniques of tissue-fitting commercial sewing patterns
for the best results, using the Palmer Pletsch system. You will be
shown how to measure effectively so that the correct size of pattern is
chosen and then be given an overview of the process, using a specific
fitting pattern, gingham bodices and fashion patterns. There will be
demonstrations of the most common alterations and examples of
many useful tools. The session is suitable for all abilities and will help
you gain confidence in altering patterns.
