Sacrament of Baptism - Congratulations! In co-operation with
God’s creative love, you have given your child breath and now you
wish to give them Real Life through the sacrament of Baptism. You
will be your child’s first teacher in the ways of the Faith. To help you
prepare for this responsibility, you are expected to participate in:
Pre-Jordan Baptismal Preparation Classes, held monthy on
Sundays at 12:15 PM in the Rectory — Prior registration required.
Please call or visit the website.
Baptisms are the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month by prior
arrangement. Contact the Parish Office or visit the Parish website.
Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick - Please notify the Parish Office
when a relative is sick or hospitalized, or going to the hospital for
surgery, and Fr. Gary can arrange an Anointing.
Sacrament of Marriage - To assist couples to enter this sacrament,
the Archdiocese of Philadelphia requires at least six months of formation prior to the reception of the sacrament. Please call the Parish Office to make an appointment to see Fr. Gary to begin your
sacramental preparation. Congratulations for responding to God’s
call to Love.
Sacrament of Holy Orders - Jesus said that we are to pray to the
Lord of the harvest, that workers will be sent at harvest time. The
best way to promote vocations to the diaconate and priesthood is
to invite those men whom you would consider would make a good
priest or deacon. If you feel the Lord might be asking you to be a
priest or deacon, Fr. Gary will always be available to answer your
questions and give direction.

2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Abide with me. The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time always features John’s Gospel, extending Epiphany (“divine manifestation”) and
reminding us that discipleship requires baptism
into Jesus’ paschal mystery. John the Baptist
“manifests” Jesus as “the Lamb of God.” When
John’s two disciples follow Jesus, Jesus’ first words
challenge them (us): “What are you looking for?”
The disciples ask, “Where are you staying?” “They
went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they
stayed with him.” The Greek is more intense: not
just “stay” but abide or remain with. At the Last
Supper, Jesus will command his disciples (us):
“Abide in me, abide in my love.” After abiding
with Jesus, Andrew hastens to do what all who
abide with Jesus should do; he tells and brings
someone else to abide with Jesus.
Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. Today’s
Gospel insists that faith sharing is more personal
encounter than intellectual experience. Disciples
come to abide with Jesus through an engaging
preacher or inspiring mentor (John the Baptist); through their own direct encounter with
Jesus (two disciples); through a family member
or friend who “dares to share” (Andrew). In Ordinary Time, the first reading always anticipates
the Gospel message. Samuel’s “call” reminds us
that to respond, we must hear; to hear, we must
first listen. We must be Samuel before we can be
Andrew!
Glorify God in your body. During Ordinary
Time, the second reading, though not coordinated with the Old Testament or Gospel readings,
often “matches.” Today, Paul reminds the Corinthians (us) that authentic discipleship requires
personal integrity.
Question of the Week
What character will I be in this week’s re-enactment of the Gospel: John the Baptist pointing
someone to Jesus? One of the two disciples encountering Jesus personally? Or Andrew bringing
a family member or friend to Jesus?
While we continue to pray for all the people of our
Parish, the Prayer List in the bulletin is ever-growing.
We respectfully ask that if your prayer intentions
have been answered that you contact the Parish Office to have your name removed from the Prayer List.
Thank you.

Next Sunday is the beginning of Catholic
Schools Week; the theme of the week for
this year is “A Year of Faith – Love It, Live It,
Learn It”. As it has been done in the past, we
will celebrate the start of the week on Sunday,
January 25th. Throughout the week, the faculty and the Home
and School Board members have planned many great activities
to acknowledge the students and staff of St. Basil the Great
Catholic School.
On Thursday, January 22nd, we will again host a Pre
School Story Hour in the school library beginning at 10:00
AM. Mrs. Grzybowski, our librarian, will read to the children;
afterward, light refreshments will be served. Please join us if
you can.
Friday, January 23rd, is the date of judging for the Science
Fair. The awards assembly will begin at 7:00 PM in the lower
level of the school.
Finally, this past week, I received a letter from the president
of Pope John Paul II High School stating that eighth grader,
Zach Murtaugh, has been awarded an academic scholarship
to that school. Zach received this award based upon his excellent academic performance on the scholarship exam as well a
favorable interview with the scholarship committee. The letter
goes on to state, “The caliber of student that we have had the
pleasure to meet from your school is clearly a tribute to the
administration, teachers, and staff. All of the students that
we have met have been a credit to the mission and vision of a
great Catholic education.” In school, we have always known
the quality of the education that we offer, but it is great to
be reaffirmed.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE DESK OF THE DRE
There is nothing “ordinary” about Ordinary Time! We can use this time to celebrate and live our faith. Let us all pause
to reflect on the grace that God bestows upon us each and every day
and give Him thanks for his loving presence.
An important reminder about PREP arrival on Sunday mornings: Car traffic flows ONE-WAY DOWN the driveway between the
convent and gym. Please stop near the stairway on the right before the
gym and drop students off along the inside curb nearest the staircase.
This area is marked by signs and volunteers are stationed here. Please
leave the far lane of the driveway open for reasons of safety.
Upcoming PREP Sundays with NO CLASS:
January 18- MLK Jr. Day holiday
February 1- Pay-It-Forward Day; watch for details coming soon
February 15- President’s Day holiday
Confirmation Class News:
The Confirmation class retreat with Fr. Stephen DeLacy will be
held on Saturday January 24 in the church from 9 am to 4 pm. All

throughout the day; please contact [email protected] for more information or to sign up.
The next PREP Confirmation classes will be held on Sun. Jan. 25
