PM, or by appointment.
Sacrament of Baptism - Congratulations! In co-operation with
God’s creative love, you have given your child breath and now you
wish to give them Real Life through the sacrament of Baptism. You
will be your child’s first teacher in the ways of the Faith. To help you
prepare for this responsibility, you are expected to participate in:
Pre-Jordan Baptismal Preparation Classes, held monthy on
Sundays at 12:15 PM in the Rectory — Prior registration required.
Please call or visit the website.
Baptisms are the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month by prior
arrangement. Contact the Parish Office or visit the Parish website.
Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick - Please notify the Parish Office
when a relative is sick or hospitalized, or going to the hospital for
surgery, and Fr. Gary can arrange an Anointing.
Sacrament of Marriage - To assist couples to enter this sacrament,
the Archdiocese of Philadelphia requires at least six months of formation prior to the reception of the sacrament. Please call the Parish Office to make an appointment to see Fr. Gary to begin your
sacramental preparation. Congratulations for responding to God’s
call to Love.
Sacrament of Holy Orders - Jesus said that we are to pray to the
Lord of the harvest, that workers will be sent at harvest time. The
best way to promote vocations to the diaconate and priesthood is
to invite those men whom you would consider would make a good
priest or deacon. If you feel the Lord might be asking you to be a
priest or deacon, Fr. Gary will always be available to answer your
questions and give direction.

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Boundaries again. From breaking the Sabbath with
a spiritual healing in the “sacred” space of the synagogue, Jesus moves to a “secular” space, Simon’s house,
and continues breaking boundaries. Though still the
Sabbath, Jesus “grasps the hand” of a woman not his
blood relative, perhaps even ritually unclean because
of illness. Boundaries broken, the fever “leaves” the
woman’s body, as the unclean spirit had “come out”
of the afflicted man’s soul.
Raised to serve. Jesus “helped Simon’s mother-in-law
up.” The Greek translated “helped up” here is translated “raised” in Mark’s account of Jesus’ resurrection.
Raised by Jesus, Simon’s mother-in-law “waited on
them.” The Greek translated “waited on” here is translated “serve” in Jesus’ self-description, “I have come not
to be served but to serve.” The same Greek word gives us
diaconate, the ordained ministry of word, liturgy, and
charity. Each of us, raised by Jesus in baptism, is called
to hear the word, participate in the liturgy, serve others in charity. Indeed, Paul proudly declares his service
to be freely-chosen “slavery.” Pope Saint John Paul II
described such discipleship as “moving from Mass to
mission,” sanctifying the whole week in the everyday
world as we have sanctified Sunday in church.
Job, Jesus, us. What a contrast between Job’s ceaseless anxiety and Jesus’ peaceful balance of contemplation and compassionate activity. A wonderful invitation to prepare for Lent by recapturing our “balance,”
that a deeper relationship with God in prayer can empower us to be, in Paul’s expression, “all things to all”
our neighbors.
Question of the Week
With Lent less than two weeks away, how will my
renewed commitment to baptized discipleship express
itself in service to others? Does my daily schedule resemble at all Jesus’ balance of serious prayer and compassionate work on behalf of others?
A PRAYER TO ST. VALENTINE
Saint Valentine of Rome is patron of engaged couples, bee-keepers,
happy marriages, love, lovers, young people, and travelers, and is the patron
saint against fainting, epilepsy, and plague.
Dear Saint and glorious martyr: Teach us to love unselfishly and
to find great joy in giving. Enable all true lovers to bring out the best
in each other in God, and God in each other.
Love is Patient and Kind. It doesn’t envy or Boast and it’s never
proud. Love is not rude or selfish. It doesn’t get angry easily or keep
track of wrongs. Love doesn’t delight in bad things. But it rejoices
in the truth.
Love always protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres. Love never fails.
--- St. Paul to the Corinthians

Catholic Charities Appeal
We’re called to create hope by the love we bring to others. Our
privilege as disciples is to give freely; to share our gifts unselfishly.
The poor, the elderly, the sick, the disabled — they all count on us.
God asks us to care for the less fortunate so that persons in need
can steady themselves and pass the spirit of hope along to others.
Now more than ever, many persons face family and economic
hardships. They need help; they look for hope. Jesus Christ remains
the source of that hope for the poor, the hungry, the disadvantaged.
And as his disciples, we’re called to follow his example of love and
service. Give Hope to those who need it most. For more information, visit www.catholiccharitiesappeal.org
ST. BASIL’S SCHOOL NEWS
This past week, I was notified by the
Connelly Foundation that one of SBG’s
eighth grade students was a Neumann Scholarship winner. This honor went to Maggie
Dougherty daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Dougherty of Chester Springs. Maggie is the 6th of the Dougherty’s
eight children to attend St. Basil the Great School. She will
continue her education at Bishop Shanahan High School in
Downingtown as her older siblings have done. Through this
scholarship, the cost of attending BSHS for 4 years will be
virtually paid for.
In order to sit for the Neumann Scholars test, a student
must meet certain criteria. His/ her CSI score must be in
the 120 range; he/ she must have a National Percentile Total
Score of 90 or above on the Terra Nova test; and he/ she
must have an average of 92 or above in 7th and 8th grades.
This year, 897 Archdiocesan students qualified, included in
this number was half of our 8th grade class. Of the students
who took the scholarship test, only 40 received scholarships.
St. Basil the Great is very proud of Maggie and her accomplishments. Congratulations, Maggie, on this great honor!
Please pray for our second graders as they make their
First Reconciliation on Monday, February 9th. Since September, they have been spent many hours in preparation for
this event. It is an exciting time for them and a time of celebration for us as a faith-filled community.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 8, 2015
Greetings St. Basil’s!
Every 3 years since 1994, the universal Catholic
Church has held the World Meeting of Families– the
largest meeting of families in the world. This year the
city of Philadelphia has been given the once in a lifetime opportunity to host this event.
Started by St. Pope John Paul II, the intent behind
the meeting is to bring families from all over the globe
together to pray together, learn the faith together and
celebrate the great gift of family. This is what makes the
event appealing for both the young and the old.
As your parish liaison, my goal is
to provide you with general information regarding this event but also to
walk with you as we continue to work
to make Christ the center of our families. Please keep your eyes and ears
peeled for on-going catechesis opportunities, holy hours and other family gatherings.
Please prayerfully consider attending this event. In
the words of Archbishop Chaput, “I believe that this
event has the power to transform in deeply positive
ways, not just the Catholic Church, but our entire community.”
God Bless,
Cathy Dakuginow
