August— August—September2014 A Place to Learn, Share & Be Creative Project Knitalong... On Wednesday afternoons from 1-3 pm we have a “Project of the Month” knitalong. For August we’re going to make the “Sundry” Shawl using 2 different colors of Madelinetosh Sock yarn and a size 6-24” circular needle. You can add a 3rd colorway if you want to add a little striping. Pattern is free with purchase of yarn for this project. Looks like a fun way to combine colors!! Come join us!! The Great Cardi Challenge… continues through August 28. Sign up when you buy your Yarn Haven yarn to make any adult-size sweater—cardigan, pullover, vest—in any weight yarn you choose. You’ll get a free TYH stitch marker at our Cardi Party! Stop by TYH each week to show your progress or post a pic on our Ravelry group forum in order to be eligible for a bi-weekly prize announced on July 11, 25, August 8 & 22. Yarn Dyeing Workshop… Summer is a great time to get outside and learn how to dye your own yarn or roving. On Saturday, August 23 from 1-3 pm we’ll be having the workshop back behind our building. (We’ll reschedule in case of rain.) For $40 you’ll get to dye a sock weight yarn or a 4 oz. ball of alpaca roving. All supplies will be furnished and you will leave with your very own color creation. Space is limited so sign up today! (Please dress in clothing suitable for being outdoors and with the possibility of dye splashes.) Market Days... On September 2—6 we will once again have our Market Days. Market Days give you the opportunity to sell yarns in your stash that you no longer want, as well as any items for knitting, crocheting, spinning or weaving. You will receive shop credit for anything that sells. Cost is only $5...no matter how many items you bring in. Go to our website and print out a sheet of market day tags to fill out. Be sure to put your initials and an item number on each tag. Then put each item in a Ziploc bag along with the tag. Bring in the items you wish to sell the week before the Market (August 25—30). On Monday, September 8 you can come by and pick up any remaining items that didn’t sell as well as your store credit certificate. Items bought during our Market Days need to be paid with cash or a check. There are always some great buys during our Market Days, so be sure to come take a look and find that special treasure. The Yarn Haven Van... Many of our customers come a long way to visit us. So starting in September, The Yarn Haven Van will begin going around to different communities in East TN bringing some of our most popular yarns to you. We can even bring special orders! If you’d like us to come to your community, email us and let us know. Fiber Friends... In August and September we have accepted the challenge from Girl Scout Troop 20577 to making chemo hats for the hat wall at the East TN Children’s Hospital. All hats on the wall are free to the patients who are undergoing chemotherapy. Hats for children and teens can be a variety of different colors and themes. Please use washable yarn that is very soft for their sensitive heads. Help us give a little extra love to these children dealing with cancer. Need knitting/crocheting help on your project? We are always more than happy to help customers with project problems and issues during regular store hours but our shop girls stay pretty busy helping customers with their selection of patterns, yarns, etc. So we now have an available knitting and crocheting help teacher. Just bring in your project and our “Stitch Doctor” will help get you back on track. Cost is $15/hr, but fee will be prorated based on the amount of time needed. For involved requests such as garment construction or learning complicated stitches, you may need to have a paid private lesson or attend one of our Weekly Classes. Need a Bag Lining? We all love to knit or crochet bags. But many times the bags would be nicer with a lining. Kelora is an excellent seamstress and would love to put a lining in your bags. Just bring by your bag for her and she will contact you with the cost of adding a lining to your creation. Blocking and Felting? Learn to Spin - 3 hours (Cost: $40) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Call and arrange a time with Kelora for your class. Come learn how to spin on a wheel. If you don’t have a wheel, we’ll let you borrow one of ours. If you want to use your own wheel, it must be complete and in good working order (no antique wheels please). We will cover all the parts of the wheel, how to treadle, how to draft, and how to ply. By the end of the class you should have a small ball of yarn you have spun up yourself and plied. (All materials included) Learn to Weave - 5 hours (Cost: $50) Instructor: Roz Yenzer Saturdays, August 16 (10 am—1 pm) & September 20 (10 am—Noon) Come learn how to weave on a rigid heddle loom. If you have your own table top loom, you are welcome to bring it. Otherwise, we will let you use one of our looms. You will learn about yarns to use, weaving terms, how to warp and weft the loom, how to end your project, and how to set up your loom with different patterns. You will make a scarf in this class. Adventures in Sweaters - 8 hours (Cost: $60) Instructor:Kelora Goethe Mondays, August 4, 11, 18, & 25 (10 am—Noon) Need help with your sweater for the Cardi Challenge? There are so many beautiful sweater designs out there, but making a garment to fit someone can be intimidating. What are all the pieces? How do I put them all together? What is “gauge”? Patterns by Knitting Pure and Simple are great ones to start with. For the more adventurous knitter, Hitofude or Charlotte would be fun to try. Supplies to be determined by the choice of pattern. Oops! - 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Monday, August 4 (10 am—Noon) Saturday, September 6 (10 am—Noon) Take control of your knitting by learning how to see your mistakes and fix them. Learn how to “read” your work, pick up dropped stitches, rip back, and put things back together. Homework: Work a 4” x 4” swatch in stockinette stitch—without binding off. Supplies: Homework swatch, yarn and needles in size used for swatch, & tapestry needle. Seaming for the faint of Heart - 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Monday, August 11 (10 am—Noon) Monday, September 22 (10 am – Noon) Don’t let putting that garment together intimidate you any more! Learn the basics of seaming pieces together and watch the magic as you produce neat, invisible seams. We’ll tackle both stockinette and garter stitch seams and you’ll walk out with new confidence! Homework: With light-colored worsted weight yarn, work two swatches as follows: CO 32 sts; Work in stockinette stitch for 2”, then work in garter stitch for 2”. BO all sts. Supplies: Homework swatches, waste yarn for seaming, tapestry needle, & scissors. Felted Clogs - 4 hours (Cost: $40) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Thursdays, September 4 & 18 (10 am—Noon) These are great house shoes for chilly days. The two layers of felted wool make for a comfy warm sole. Although this pattern is intimidating at first glance, it is not hard to put together. Start making these up for Christmas next year! Supplies: pattern by Fiber Trends, 2 skeins of Galway or Cascade 220 for the soles and 1 skein for the top of the shoe, and size 13-24” needles. CLASSES… Beginning Lace Shawl - 6 hours (Cost: $55) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Fridays, September 5, 12 & 19 (10 am—Noon) Are you scared to death of knitting lace? Well, Evelyn Clark’s Flower Basket Shawl is the perfect pattern for beginning lace knitters. Come learn how to increase and decrease in a pattern that makes beautiful eyelets. You’ll soon be ready to take the next step in lace knitting. Supplies: Flower Basket Shawl pattern, size 5-32” needles and 3 skeins of Alpaca Silk yarn. Cast-ons and Bind-offs—The How and When- 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Monday, September 8 (10 am—Noon) Have you ever needed a stretchy bind-off and weren’t sure what to use? How about casting on stitches in the middle of your work—which technique is the best? This class will give you both the how-to techniques and the knowledge about when and where to use them. Homework: Cast on 14 sts in a light-colored, worsted weight yarn on size 7-8 needles and knit a few rows. Supplies: Homework swatch, extra pair of 7-8 needles, & crochet hook size F-G. Turkish Bed Socks - 3 hours (Cost: $30) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Monday, September 15 (10 am—1 pm) Get some Christmas knitting done now, making these adorable footlets. Using just one skein of Koigu, they make up in a jiffy and when you finish one pair, it only remains to pick out yarn for the next pair! Mimi’s revised pattern is included which eliminates the seaming and adds some short rows for a more refined fit. Come learn all the tips and tricks to this great project. Supplies: size 2 circular needle with 24” cable or size 2 double-pointed needles, 1 skein of Koigu, pattern, a tapestry needle, & a small crochet hook Advent Calendar Scarf—2 hours (Cost: $10/week) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Monday mornings (10 am—Noon) starting September 8 We all love the anticipation of Christmas. Designer Kristin Benecken has provided a set of fun knits with 24 parts in each to count down the days of Advent. Each Advent Calendar Scarf pattern has 24 different stitch designs with spacers of lace and beads between each. The patterns are free on Ravelry. There are 3 different sets to choose from. Come and learn new stitch designs that can enhance many other projects. Each scarf takes approximately 1000 yards of lace weight yarn. Fingering weight may be used, but not all the stitch designs will fit in 1000 yards. Size 4 needle is recommended for lace weight, size 6 for fingering. Beads with a pop of color are a nice addition. Supplies: bring the printed pattern you want to do, yarn & appropriate size needle. Beads and Buttons—a Polymer Clay Workshop—3 hours w/ lunch break (Cost:$30) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Saturday, September 20 (10 am—2 pm) Learn how to embellish your knitwear with beautiful beads and buttons which are simple, fun, and economical to make. We will supply all the tools you need to create a plethora of designs from basic to funky. Critter Workshop - 2 hours (Cost: $10/ wk) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Saturday, September 13 (10 am—Noon) Just darling! That’s all that can be said to describe these beautiful bunnies, adorable foxes & cute elephants. Come along with us as we start a journey of making these precious knitted animals. We’ll learn all the tips and techniques of knitting, seaming, stuffing, and embroidering as we go along. Class fees are non-refundable, but can be used for a future class if notified the day before the class. Classes start promptly, so please be on time. Please put your cell phone on silent during the class so you don’t disturb your classmates or other customers in the shop. All yarns used in the classes must have been purchased at The Yarn Haven unless the class is set up to use yarn from your stash. This helps everyone in class to be on the same page. Class size is limited and will not usually be canceled as long as one person has signed up. Space in classes is limited to registered students. This means no guests (adult or child). Classes may need to be rescheduled in case of bad weather or illness. Weekly Class make-ups must be done within the month of the class. Birthday Policy... Birthdays are times to celebrate. So at The Yarn Haven, you get a birthday discount!! Come to the shop during the week of your birthday and receive a one-time 10% discount on your purchases as my birthday gift to you. Discount does not include special orders or classes. Returns... No return on needles, hooks, patterns or books. No cash or credit card refunds will be given. Store credit will be given on items returned with receipt, in original condition, within 60 days and if we still stock that item. Sale Bin items and Special Orders are not returnable. Our “Go Green” Program… If you bring your own bag to put your purchases in...or don’t take a paper bag...then you get a ticket for our monthly drawing for a $10 gift certificate. The winning ticket numbers will be posted on our website on the first day of each month. If you have one of the tickets, simply come to the shop by the end of the month and claim your prize. Hopefully, this will get us all in the habit of bringing our own bags everywhere. We love to socialize… It’s always great to get together with other crafters while you work on a project.
