Convertible Chemo Cap
Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn*
Size 7 (4.5mm) - 16” circular needles
Size G (4mm) crochet hook
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
CO – Cast On
Sts - stitches
K – Knit
P – Purl
K2P2 – Knit two, Purl two
Rep - repeat
YO – Yarn Over
K2Tog – Knit the next two stitches together
BO – Bind Off
HDC – Half Double Crochet
Instructions:
*When choosing yarn for chemo caps, please keep in mind that cancer patients' heads can be very
sensitive due to the effects of chemotherapy. Yarns that are next-to-the-skin soft are best, such as
Berroco “Comfort” or Dark Horse “Fantasy”
CO 96 sts. Join for knitting in the round, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker.

K2P2 rib for 2 rows
K 1 row
K2P2 rib for 2 rows
Continue in stocking stitch (K all rows) until hat measures 7.5” from CO edge.
*YO, K2tog, K2*, rep this set of sts all around (you should have an even number of YO's)
K 7 rows
BO, weave in all ends.
With the crochet hook, chain enough chains to weave through YO's. Make it long enough to thread
through YO holes, with enough left over to tie. If you want to stop here, fasten off chain.
If you want to make the drawstring a little sturdier, HDC 3 times into each of the next 10 or so
chains. Slip stitch back until 10 (or so) chains remain. At this point you'll need to thread the
drawstring through the YO holes. Otherwise it'll be too difficult with the bulk of the end of the
drawstring. HDC 3 times into each of the remaining chains and fasten off.
Alternatively you could just crochet a chain and just slip stitch all the way back, eliminating the
spiral ends.
