MindPlus March 2015 2015 brings some changes to our one-day programme and we hope this update will help with any queries you may currently have. Our classes have started for the year and have only a couple of weeks left before we close entries for this term however we have options for new referrals throughout 2015. INFORMATION PACKS: If you’d like to find out more about what we offer please email us on [email protected] for an information pack. PROGRAMME ENTRY: Students who have previously attended or been accepted for Gifted Kids or One Day School receive automatic entry in 2015. Prospective students have two ways of entering in 2015: a) Compete a selection workshop (no cost) in March for a term 2 start. b) Complete an individual assessment (parent cost) at any stage to start at the closest appropriate term. START DATES: To maximise the benefit for students and minimize class disruption, MindPlus will have 3 entry dates for 2015. Entry is only guaranteed at this time if an appropriate place is available for the student. th th Term 1: the week beginning 9 or 16 February 2015 th Term 2: the week beginning 20 April 2015 th Term 3: the week beginning 20 July 2015. Referrals after this date will begin the following year. Gifted learners who attend MindPlus attend 38 one-day sessions per year. Our specialist staff strongly recommend full year attendance to truly benefit from the programme and for this reason we ask that families do commit to the full year. We advocate inclusion in the programme for at least two years for children to derive maximum benefit. Our expectation is that children will attend and participate for as long as they are benefitting from the programme. For some children this may mean participation in MindPlus for three, four or even five years on the programme. CURRICULUM: MindPlus is a one-day programme that provides intellectual, creative, social and emotional support and replaces the existing One Day School and Gifted Kids classes. The programme brings together like-minded individuals who appreciate the support to discover what it means to be gifted and who thrive on intellectual and creative challenge. The programme is delivered via the NZCGE curriculum which focuses on conceptual development, personal development and talent development and is supported by developing processes relating to research, complex thinking and communication. Students will have choice, they will be able to be creative, and they will be learning about a universal concept, in 2015 the concept is CHANGE. A ‘topic’ unit will spread across several weeks, allowing for greater depth in understanding, and the universal concept will be the focus of the year’s learning in conceptual development. There will also be time spent each day on developing individual children’s talents and in explicitly teaching aspects of personal development related to giftedness, with the end goal that students understand what giftedness is, how it relates to them and how they can manage issues connected to their giftedness, and self-advocate. Infused through all of this will be what we are calling learning processes - skills in research, in thinking, and in communicating which will be taught explicitly when needed and then integrated through content.
