Frames in Focus: Sansovino Frames
National Gallery, 1 Apr 13 Sept 2015
Take a fresh perspective on art at the National Gallery, where Frames in Focus: Sansovino Frames looks at picture
frames, not the pictures themselves, in this unexpectedly fascinating exhibition. For once, the painted canvas is not the
star of the show as visitors are presented with a history of the often overlooked frames. While early altarpieces were
generally framed, it wasn’t until the mid16th century that the frame became designed to both enhance the picture and
also to be removable. The type of frame that played the most significant part in this was the Sansovino frame.
Featuring carved overlapping scrolls, masks, broken pediments, garlands of fruit and even animals, and having been
influenced by architectural thought, they gradually became items of interest in their own right. For more information

What's new in London this spring?
At a time when Britain will be engaged in the democratic process of an election, the V&A will examine the role of public
institutions in contemporary life and what it means to be responsible for a national collection. A series of specially
commissioned interventions around the Museum will raise questions about the opportunities, obligations and limits to
participation in this national institution. The exhibition will act as a laboratory for public life and explore the role of
design and architecture in defining civic identity, technology, security, citizenship, democracy, the public realm and
urban experience. For more information contact [email protected]
The EY Exhibition: Sonia Delaunay
Tate Modern, 15 Apr 9 Aug 2015
Head to Tate Modern to witness work by one of the key figures of the Parisian avantgarde movement, as paintings by
Sonia Delaunay go on display. As one of the most respected and revered women on the European abstract scene,
Delaunay quickly made an impression with her paintings that celebrate technology, urban life and the modern world of
movement. She collaborated with her husband Robert Delaunay, and between them they came up with new and
inventive ways of exploring colour theory. Delaunay worked across a wide array of media, many examples of which
are evident in this first major retrospective in the United Kingdom. For more information contact

years. Uncover their stories through rare historic items such as shields and weapons, early indigenous art and current,
specially commissioned pieces. Many of the objects have never been on public display before and are used to show
the challenges that have been faced by the Aboriginal groups, including the time of British colonisation. For more

The Alice Look
V&A Museum of Childhood, 2 May 1 Nov 2015
Celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's much loved trip to Wonderland with The Alice Look. This
enchanting exhibition brings together a range of photographs, rare editions, garments and illustrations that show how
the Alice character became a major cultural landmark. Although many link her image with period dress, there are
many examples of Alice adopting a contemporary look. The exhibition is divided into four main areas: Beginnings
shows early editions of the books with Sir John Tenniel's illustrations alongside children's garments from the period.
Follower of Fashion shows how illustrators have kept Alice up to date, while Inspiration and Global Alice display how
Alice has inspired fashion and music and been adapted by different nations in very different ways. For more

Four people arrive to work the night shift in a meat factory. They meet for the first time. They are employed as cleaners,
by a temp agency. They are all on zerohours contracts. Every shift, they clean. Every four hours, they take a break.
They drink tea or coffee together. They read magazines. They chat. As it gets light, they go home, or to another job.
The cycle goes on. And on. Strangers. Until something stirs, until isolated people get too close to one another, too fast.
Alexander Zeldin’s brutally honest and darkly humorous play, written through devising with the company, exposes
stories of an invisible class. For more information contact [email protected]
The Audience
Apollo Theatre, from 21 Apr 2015
The smash hit production The Audience by Peter Morgan returns to the West End, starring Kristin Scott Thomas and
directed by Stephen Daldry. For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly
audience at Buckingham Palace – a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an
unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses. The Audience breaks this contract of
silence – and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From
Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a
confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. From young mother to grandmother, these private
audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of
electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister. For more information

spotlight. Unconventional, risqué and often downright rude, they are everything a respectable English family shouldn’t
be. When each member of the family invites a guest to their rural retreat, the unassuming visitors are thrown into a
living melodrama. Misjudged meetings, secret seductions and scandalous revelations proliferate during one
outrageous weekend in Berkshire. For more information contact [email protected]
