T
he Summer season will officially be upon us
soon. As a child, summer time was my favorite
time of year. Beginning with Memorial Day, and
ending with Labor Day, summer to me was a welcome
break from school, and a time to be a “park rat” to
play, visit new places, swim, play ball, read for fun,
bike, fish, learn a new art or craft, and meet new
people. To offer Boca Raton residents these same
opportunities, the Recreation Services staff have
been busy planning activities and programs to keep
you and your children active until school is back in session. In July, we have the
traditional mid-Summer 4th celebration to enjoy the freedoms, which we enjoy as
a nation.
With 40 different camp offerings and our Library reading program, the summer
in Boca Raton has a variety of activities to entice children to keep their minds and
bodies active. We offer traditional, environmental, spy, and even surf camps. Your
children can develop their creative talents by writing and directing a movie, or see
how our new 3-D printer works. I believe we are offering an unparalleled array of
opportunities.
I am also excited about having online registration available for all camps, for the
very first time. I trust that this process will go smoothly.
Since 1956, July has been designated as Recreation and Parks Month by the
National Recreation and Parks Association which advocates for parks, recreation
and environmental conservation that enhance your quality of life. The City of Boca
Raton joins in this national celebration. Our goal is to touch the lives of everyone in
the community and for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the “City within a Park”.

daytime auto burglaries are beaches,
parks, gyms, and daycare.
Here are a few reminders
• Always lock your vehicle and roll
up the windows, no matter how long
you will be away.
• Limit what you bring to our
beaches & parks; an empty vehicle
deters thieves.
• Don’t leave purses, wallets,
electronics, money, sunglasses,
diaper bags, gym bags, or keys in
your vehicle.
• Please watch out for subjects
who loiter, appear to be lifting door
handles or are looking into windows.
Report these people immediately to
police by calling 561-368-6201, 911,
or alert a nearby park ranger.
• Thieves are always watching!
Placing your
belongings in the
trunk or under
your seat does not
safeguard them.

Futsal is indoor soccer. Futsal is a great skill developer for children
as it demands quick reflexes, fast thinking and pinpoint passing. The

a deposit for use of the chair.
What is it? Ocean bathers report red welts and blotches, which are
concentrated under the swimsuit and other parts of the body after
swimming in the ocean. Itching and redness usually occur several
hours after ocean bathing. Some experience a slight “prickling”
sensation while they are in the water. This occurs mostly from April
to July.
Symptoms: Itching -- usually lasts 2-4 days, but it can last as long
as 2 weeks. Some people have more severe reactions, including
headache, fever, nausea and infected blisters. Children may develop
high fever.
Prevention: Make sure you change out of your bathing suit
before showering. This may reduce your risk for sea bather’s
eruption by half.
Treatment: An oral antihistamine may help to relieve the itching.
Also, an over-the-counter topical 1% cortisone cream or sting aid
may be helpful. With severe reactions or complications, call your
physician immediately. For more information, call (561) 514-5369,
HRS-Palm Beach County Public Health Unit.
