Cutting Instructions: Fabric A - African Safari Panel (24883-Mul1) 1. Fussy cut panel to 17 1/2" x 24 1/2". (quilt center) Fabric B –African Safari Shelf (24885-Mul1) 1. Fussy cut (4) 6 3/4" x the width of the fabric. Begin cutting 1/4" below the stripe with the circles and ending 1/4" above the orange band. (outer border) 3. Cut (2) 4 1/2” x 4 1/2" squares; then cut each square in half on the diagonal to yield 4 half square triangles. (inner border corner blocks) 4. Cut (2) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles. (inner side border connector) Fabric E – (backing fabric) (#24886-Mul1) 1. Cut (1) 42” x 40” piece. Using a scrap from fabric B, cut (1) 4 1/2” x 40” piece. Sew the two pieces together to make (1) 40” x 46” piece (backing). Piecing Instructions: Fabric C – Background (24889-Mul1) 1. Cut (3) strips 4” x the width of the fabric. Then cut (40) 3 1/4" x 4” rectangles from the strips. With the right side of the fabric facing up, cut (20) of the rectangles in half on the diagonal, from the lower left corner to the upper right corner, to yield 40 triangles. (Left triangle - geese background) Cut the remaining rectangles, with the fabric right side up, cutting from the lower right corner to the upper left corner, to yield 40 opposite triangles. (right triangle - geese background) 2. Cut (2) 4 1/2” x 4 1/2" squares; then cut each square in half on the diagonal to yield 4 half square triangles. (inner border corner blocks) Fabric D – Panel Background (24890-Mul1) 1. Cut (4) strips 2 1/4" x wof for the binding. 2. Cut (3) strips 4” x the width of the fabric; then cut (36) 3” x 4” rectangles from the strips. (geese) 2 Block 1: This block is foundation pieced. Print four sheets of “African Safari Block 1” making sure that you print at 100%, and that “scale” is not selected. 1. The geese are made up of the fabric D rectangles and the background is from the fabric C left and right triangles. Complete to make 8 blocks as seen here. 2. Trim the blocks down to 3 1/2" x 8 1/2", (Trim 1/4" past the SOLID line.) Block 2: This block is also foundation pieced. Print one sheet of “African Safari Block 2” making sure that you print at 100%, and that “scale” is not selected. 1. Make 2 “A” units and 2 “B” units as in block 1; then sew an “A” unit to a “B” unit so that the points of the geese, point towards the center. Repeat to yield 2 blocks. 2. Trim the blocks down to 3 1/2" x 8 1/2". (Trim 1/4" past the SOLID line.) SPX style # 4473 “African Safari” fabric collection by Kathleen Francour for SPX Fbrics. Block 3: 1. Sew a fabric C half square triangle to a fabric D half square triangle. Repeat to yield 4 blocks. 7. Repeat on the remaining two sides of the quilt. 8. Miter the corners, then trim off the excess fabric to complete the outer border. Finishing: 2. Trim blocks to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2". Assembly: 1. Sew one block 1 to each end of a block 2, pointing the geese of block 1 towards block 2. Repeat to yield 2. 2. Sew one to the top and one to the bottom edge of the center panel. 3. Sew one block 1 unit to each long edge of the fabric D 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangle, so that the geese point towards the rectangle. 1. Layer the quilt top with the batting and backing and quilt as desired. 2. Trim the backing and batting even with the quilt top. 3. Sew the binding strips end to end with diagonal (bias) seams to form one long strip. 4. Press the strip in half, lengthwise, wrong sides together. 5. Sew to the quilt front, using a 1/4" seam allowance, matching the raw edges of the binding with the edge of the quilt top, mitering the corners. 6. Turn the binding to the back and stitch in place. Enjoy your quilt! 4. Sew one block 3 to each end of the unit made in step 3, making sure to align them as in the picture below. Repeat to yield 2. 5. Sew one of the units made in step 4 to each side edge of the center panel to complete the inner border. Refer to the quilt image to correctly align these strips. 6. Center and sew a fabric B strip to opposite sides of the quilt aligning the strip so that the feet of the animals face towards the panel. Begin sewing the seam 1/4" in from the beginning and ending 1/4" before the end. Do NOT trim off excess fabric. *Please note that the instructions for this quilt were written for the sole purpose of using the “African Safari” fabric line from SPX Fabrics.
