satisfactorily addressed by our staff, feel
free to call our Administrative Hotline. Our
Hotline can also be used to report
suspected fraud, waste and abuse in
accordance with the federal Deficit
Reduction Act of 2005. The Hotline
number is posted throughout the facility.
An Administrative Assistant will take calls,
or you can record a message when no one
is available. Please follow the instructions
when leaving a recorded message. Your
call is confidential, but you do need to
provide your name and telephone number,
in case we need to contact you for more
information, and to inform you of the action
taken. You can report Fraud, Waste, and
Abuse to the Lehigh County Ethics Hotline

Dining Services encourages residents, family
members, and staff to participate in the Recipes
from Home Program. We are always looking for
new ideas as well as those ‘old time’ favorite
recipes. Recipes can be placed in the Recipe Box
outside of the Receptionist Office. Recipes could
be as little as a dessert or as big as an entrée. Get
your name in the Hillside News, by donating a
recipe or you can choose to be an anonymous
participant. So go ahead and share some of those
wonderful recipes. You never know, your
neighbor may enjoy them as much as you do!!

Tips for Keeping Your Money and Valuables Safe
Although we discourage residents from keeping money and
valuables in their room, we realize that many of you will choose to do so.
Therefore, we would like to offer these tips to help you keep your money and
valuables safe from loss or theft. Since you have access to the money in your
account during normal business hours Monday through Friday, we suggest
that you only withdraw the amount you need for immediate use. If you need
larger sums of money for gifts or to reimburse your family members for
purchases made on your behalf, we suggest that you contact Financial
Services to arrange for payment by check. If you choose to keep money and
valuables in your room, we highly recommend that you secure such items in
the locked drawer of your bedside cabinet. Keep your key with you, or keep
your key out of sight in a safe place. As soon as you realize that your money
or property is missing, it is important to report it immediately to the Charge
Nurse. Cedarbrook will not assume responsibility for replacing missing
property kept by residents on their person or in their room. However, we will
take action to investigate, and try to recover your property if possible. Finally,
we ask that you help us maintain a current inventory of your personal
property. Any property that you purchase or receive during your stay should
be added to your Valuables Received After Admission Form, including a
description of the property. This information is essential when trying to locate
missing items.

Cedarbrook Allentown and Fountain Hill. Residents
with wireless devices such as laptops, notebooks, tablets
(Kindle, Nook, etc) may request access through their
Social Worker or Therapeutic Recreation Aide. Our
PC Specialist will assign a unique username and
password, which must be kept confidential. Visitors
may request access at the switchboard. Usernames and
passwords for visitors will automatically expire after
three days.

Every quarter each Unit (shift specific) will have the
opportunity to be gifted a free lunch by fulfilling the dreams of three residents.
Rules:
1. Inquire from a resident who has not had their dream fulfilled and complete a
Dream Discovery form (attached or on each nursing unit).
2. Talk with staff and family members on how to fulfill the dream. Connect
with a Cedarbrook Dream Catchers board members for support:
St. 1 - Zulma Alvarez; St. 2 - Nancy Hills; St. 3 - Dave McQuillen;
St. 4 - Jenn Brown; and St. 5 - Bert or Fran.
3. Submit the Dream Discovery form and dream fulfillment plan to

As you look forward to summer, take the time to reflect back on your cherished
memories of summers gone by. Think about the fun you have had and how you
might be able to share those experiences with our residents. Maybe it will be
fishing in our well-stocked pond or helping residents enjoy one of the outdoor
concerts, or even just taking residents outside to enjoy the nice weather on the
patio. There are so many ways you can spend an hour or two and make a
difference in the life of a resident; while making a new memory for you to
cherish. There are opportunities to help in the evenings or on the weekends at both locations. Helping
others is one of the best fits you can give yourself. To quote Helen Keller: “The unselfish effort to bring
cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves.”
Here are some ways you can help:
Do you like to play bingo or dominos? We ar e looking for a bingo helper on Tuesday mor nings at
10:30 a.m. at the Fountain Hill site or Allentown on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Allentown is also looking for
someone to run dominos on Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. Each games lasts about 1 hour and is certainly tons of
fun for our residents.
We are looking for Fishing volunteers! We will be holding our Annual Fishing Event
June 8 - June 19th. Experience is required and the desire to have some good old fashioned fun! Sign up
for a 2-hour morning and/or afternoon shift. Any one who volunteers will be invited to the Fish Fry that
will be held later in the month. This is a Fountain Hill and Allentown event. Fountain Hill residents will
be bused to our Allentown Campus where fishing will take place in our well-stocked stream.
Transport volunteers are needed. We ar e star ting the outdoor concer ts, J une thr u September .
Many residents attend, so we will need volunteers to transport from the Allentown facility over to the
Cedarview Apartment where the concerts are held. There is also a great need for volunteers to transport
residents to in-house appointments and activities at both locations, days, evenings, and weekends. This
can be done for any amount of time you have available to give and will be greatly appreciated.
Like to garden? Have landscape experience? We ar e looking for individuals or gr oups who would
like to help with keeping the outside of Cedarbrook looking its best. We need helpers at both locations.
Do you know a High School student who would like to volunteer/do community service hours? We
offer opportunities for students at both Cedarbrook locations. The summer is a great time to work on
getting those hours done, while helping others.
Bazaar and Yard Sale help is needed. On Fr iday, J une 5th Cedar br ook Fountain Hill will be having
it’s Spring Bazaar and Yard Sale. We are in need of some helpers for set-up, transporting residents around
the bazaar, working at tables, or baked goods. Volunteers can sign up for any time between 8:30 a.m. to
3:00 p.m.
Check your calendar; see if you have a few hours you
could volunteer to help at Cedarbrook. Our residents
and staff would love to have your help.

Calling all Dream Catchers…
Who: CBFH staff, family members and friends of the residents
What: Complete Dream Catcher form for a resident
Where: Dream Catchers forms located in reception area or nursing units
When a dream unfolds, the resident experiences a deeper sense of self-worth,
connection and joy. The effect lingers in the heart of the resident and creates
an uplifting ripple effect throughout Cedarbrook.
Please feel free to use the following Dream Discovery form (attached)
to help us discover our residents’ dreams. Please submit form either
to Mary Hazzard, Administration or Zulma Alvarez.
Award Winning Volunteers
On April 16th Cedarbrook volunteers Ed and
Emily Folland were celebrated at the Breakfast for
Champions event held by the Volunteer Center of the
Lehigh Valley. This special event is held annually for
local agencies to honor some of their hardworking
volunteers.
Emily and Ed began their relationship with Cedarbrook
when Emily’s mother and sister were residents. They
could see the benefits of keeping residents engaged
mentally, physically, and socially. It was obvious they
understood the positive and lasting impact this has on the resident’s quality of life. They wanted to be a part of that
endeavor.
Ed and Emily began volunteering for Cedarbrook Nursing Home in 2013. Most often volunteering 100 to 150 hours
a month. Last year, Emily lovingly gave over 1,453 hours to the residents at Cedarbrook. This is the highest number
of volunteer hours for the year; and her husband Ed is right there with 1,406. Together they have blessed
Cedarbrook with 4,358 hours in just two years!! One might wonder how someone could give that number of hours.
For Emily, it is her zest for making someone’s day brighter and her dedication to assisting the staff at Cedarbrook.
Emily does office support, transports residents to activities, helps residents make craft projects, she also spends
many, many hours at home creating craft items for sale at our annual bazaar. She takes great care doing the laundry
of one of our residents. This is just the tip of the iceberg, Emily often gathers residents who want to play cards or
games. We have a regularly scheduled pinochle game on Thursdays and Fridays, however, Emily is happy to
accommodate residents who want to play any day of the week. She has also taken time to learn dominos and other
games at the request of the residents. Her goal is to improve the quality of life for everyone around her.
Ed enjoys volunteering at Cedarbrook too. He also volunteers 100-150 hours a month. He visits many of our
residents daily, trying to create a meaningful relationship with each of them. Some residents have no family or are
unable to attend the scheduled activities in our auditorium. He often spends many hours in the family room, where
residents know they can find him nearly every day. It gives them a chance to reminisce about the old days or chat
about current events. Many of the residents look forward to spending time with their good buddy, Ed. They are a
wonderfully dedicated couple and their enthusiasm is boundless. We are honored to have this wonderful couple as a
part of Cedarbrook’s volunteer corps.
