It is the story of the 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston Island on Sept. 8, the deadliest natural disaster in United States history. Creativity in Seniors With Dementia Dan Cohen of New York had a simple idea: Furnish people that have memory loss with an iPod loaded with their favorite music. It’s helping people reconnect with themselves by listening to their personal playlists. Cohen notes, “Residents who were formerly idle become engrossed in listening to their favorite music. They choose the songs they want to hear. They become engaged as the music triggers memories. Sometimes the experience can even make people more social.” Headphones are recommended to minimize distractions. Sit together, turn on the iPod and watch for smiles of delight. That was the largest loss of firefighters in the line of duty ever in the United States history. Our facility did not forget the lives of those men and women who served our country. GHCC, Texas City marked the anniversary by serving an appreciation breakfast to all firefighters, EMTs and law enforcement officials in our community. Why it’s Guadalupe Russo! ————————————— Resident Party On Aug. 29 our seniors celebrated Labor Day with a knock-out party that was combined with August birthdays. You had to be there to see all of the action! D.J. Latimer rocked the facility with music of the ’50s and ’60s. The music could be heard down any hall and our bed-bound residents were clapping their hands to the beat! After all that dancing, the group cooled down with a game of indoor volleyball. Our nursing staff reported that most of the residents fell asleep early that night. You don’t say! We did it again! Another trip to Isle of Capri Casino in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The minute we got off the bus, we made our way to that delicious buffet. So much to choose from! We stopped just one shrimp away from being too full. No time to nap.....Cha Ching!!! Our caregivers did a wonderful job of making sure our five residents were happy.
