March President’s Message
Dear Members,
The first day of spring is right around the corner! While we are still waiting for
more winter rains, March 20 will soon be here, hopefully bringing many spring
showers. That is not a known; we do know for sure there is much happening in the
Guild!
Our March 4 meeting is the second annual “Mixer.” Like last year it promises to be a lot of fun and also
provide information about the Guild doings, enjoying the challenge quilts and getting to know each
other better. Bring a friend as this is the meeting that is geared for Guild information, activities and
social interaction. There are also great refreshments provided by the Board, and all the recipes are
included in our soon to be published cookbook (available at the meeting for viewing proof version and
pre-ordering).
The Pine Tree Quilt Guild’s 30th year anniversary is THIS year! Founded in 1984, our quilt show is
celebrating this special event with wonderful Charter and Lifetime member quilt displays, along with a
Gala opening on Friday evening May 2 from 5:30-8:00 PM. Note that on your calendar as it is planned
to be a grand (and no cost) event! We will be viewing the quilts 5:30 until 6:30 in the main building
followed by appetizers 6:30 until 8:00 in the Ponderosa Pines Building (old senior center). There is no
charge for Guild members and one guest, and entry includes appetizers and drinks. The bonus is that
the display of the Mountain Art Quilters is on display in the Ponderosa Pines building.
More goings on - Mary Levy is presenting her wonderful potholder quilt class March 5 at Seventh Day
Adventist Church. This is a quilt as you go project project and NO stress! Call or e-mail Kathleen

March Workshop
Mary Levy is again presenting her potholder quilt class. For those who
learned the technique at the Jamboree in September, you can come and
make another quilt in a day! Or maybe you can come and finish the one
you started in September....oh, those UFOs! Mine is hanging at my
sister’s house in San Jose. That may have been one of the few I finished last year!
Mary is delightful and so patient, you’ll love her and appreciate her skills.

Junior Quilters
The Junior Quilters are learning that once you have the top of your quilt done, you still have a long
way to go before your quilt can be called finished. They are now making their 3 layer "sandwich" and
are learning about different ways to "quilt" their gorgeous creations. Our February meeting was
devoted to the mentors giving demonstrations on various ways to stitch that sandwich
together….
Heidi Cook showed how to
"stitch in the ditch" using
a walking foot.
Dianne Rockwell discussed hand
quilting and the use of stencils
Eleanor Sagely introduced paper
designs and transfer techniques.
Sandra Bruce demonstrated
the ease of using a wash away
pen.

Quilt Show News..........The Quilt Show is a little over two months away.
I
hope you are hard at work making those beautiful quilts to hang in the show. We
have a great group of committee volunteers who are hard at work to put together a
fantastic 30th anniversary show! We are in need of donations for the raffle baskets
as well as the silent auction. Please consider donating some fabric or quilting
supplies or a completed quilt or wall hanging to these two committees. We are also in need of
volunteers to work the show. We will be at the March Mixer with sign-up sheets for all the different
areas that will need your help. Thank you, in advance, for volunteering your time. We cannot put the
show on without you!

Quilt Judging is not just competition. It’s about more than
(to borrow from the Olympics) the “thrill of victory and the
agony of defeat”. It’s a unique opportunity to have your
work evaluated by an experienced, professional judge who
will encourage you in the areas that are well executed and
help to identify areas that need improvement. This is your
chance – enter your quilt for judging!
AND ..attend judging day (May 1) – even better, get a front
row seat by being a “holder” or “scribe “ for a session.

Silent Auction
The donations for Silent Auction are pouring in!!! Actually, we have four items with a definite
promise for three more. You and I both know it's going to take a LOT!!! more than this.
The Silent Auction is one of the big money makers of the show and I would love to give
the Baskets and the Opportunity Quilt a real run for their money. At the March meeting
my co-chair, Ginni DeThomas, and I will be on stage showing all the donations to date.
We would love for your offerings to be among them. Please look us up at the March Mixer
and give us your donations or tell us what you are working on for the booth.

Basket Committee
The basket committee is searching for a few
good donations. We are accepting items that
are related to to sewing, quilting. Examples
are as follows: fabrics ( fat quarters work best), quilting books,
patterns and notions that would be used by quilters.
The winning basket group or individual will be treated to a
Carriage Ride and Lunch provided by Empire Carriage! Sounds
like a delightful time to be had with friends or family.
A note about the mini groups. The ladies from Uncommon
Threads have removed themselves from the competition due to
their multiple wins.

Quilt Show Programs
I would appreciate programs from any Guild shows that you attend
this year. I am always looking for ways to better our own programs.
It is very helpful to see what other Guilds are putting in or leaving
out of their show programs. For example – how many are including
advertising, and if so what kind. How do they list the quilt entries?
Etc.

Quilt Show flyers and bookmarks
are in and will be available for
you to pick up at the March
general meeting. The Quilt Show
publicity team has been working
very hard to prepare packets of
flyers and bookmarks which will
be distributed locally as well as
all over northern California. We
all know though that the best
way to encourage greater
attendance at our show is
through word of mouth and
personal contact. Please pick up
some flyers and bookmarks and
send them along to family,
friends, and neighbors along with
a note to join us for a fun day
at the show. Better yet, hand
one to someone, along with your
personal invitation to join us for
a day of fun and inspiration!

“Highlights of Guild Positions”
EDUCATION OUTREACH
The Education Outreach Committee was started in 1996 to provide help in local classrooms where
quilt related projects were going on and to make programs available to community organizations as
needed. We began with trunk shows and quickly added hands-on help as needed by teachers. In 1997
the Scrapbaggers mini group “adopted” us and made many beautiful quilts for our trunk. That year
Guild member Donna Foote wrote an original play for us titled “Road to California” which we have
presented to third, fourth and fifth graders. Pine Tree Players, under the direction of Joy Waggener,
perform the play in costume, tell about their trip across the plains, the wonderful things they saw, and
show their quilt blocks made to record the great adventure. The play is followed by a trunk show. Our
Guild March Mixer will include a performance of the play and display of all the things we make
available to the classrooms.
Robin Mello has taken on the classroom project part of the committee’s work, along with her faithful
group of helpers who go into schools with their machines and their patience to help children make
pillows, wall hangings, quilts and flags. Robin will provide a display of their work at the mixer.
Carolyn Christensen is in charge of a large box of children’s books and teacher materials related to
quilting which can be checked out by any classroom for a two week period. The trunk show, play,
books and classroom projects are often all used together to provide a solid addition to social studies, art
or math curriculum.
In addition to helping children learn about the history and art of quilting, we are often asked to go to
assisted living facilities, church groups, or other community groups needing an interesting program.
We not only educate but also provide good PR for the Guild!
We hope you will enjoy our play and displays at the Mixer.

Guild Challenge
Guild Challenge quilts are due at the March Guild meeting. Please bring your challenge quilt a lile early. We will be
taking in quilts from 5:50 to 6:30. Please print the name of the quilt, your color, shape and noun on a piece of
paper and pin it the to the front boom right corner of your quilt. NO names please. We will sign in your quilt and
it will be hung for viewing and voting. Quilt may be picked up at the end of the meeting. Ribbons will be awarded in
the following categories. 1) Best Use Of Theme; 2) Best Appliqué; 3) Best Art; 4) Most Humorous; 5) Favorite
Quilt.

Community Services and Drop In and Sew
March Mixer Special! ! ! There will be a drawing for two gift bags. Donate one-quarter yard of fabric and receive one
ticket, donate one yard of fabric and receive five tickets.
CS and Nevada County Reads and Writes met to discuss a book themed quilt. There was not enough time for us to make
this happen this year however they are looking for volunteers for their March 21 “Craft In” event – they need people to
provide help and advice on sewing, knitting, crocheting. The event will be held at the Madelyn Helling Library, 11:00 –
4:00. If you want to help out let me know and I will pass the word on to the event organizer.
CS quilts are not made just for the December distribution. If you know anyone who needs a quilt, we distribute throughout
the year. CS and DIS meet on Thursday, March 20, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Grass Valley, 9:00 – 3:00; 2014
calendar dates below. We will be working on a variety of easy quilts, assembling quilt kits, matching tops to backs, and
working on the baby quilts for Nicaragua and the graduation quilts for foster youth. I have received a few for both
programs so please let me know if you are also working on one. Small and large quilt tops are also available for you to
practice your free motion quilting – stitch in the ditch, sew from corner to corner, stipple, meander, or whatever you want
to try. Let me know – I will bring quilts to guild meeting, meet you, or you can work on one at Community Services.
Community Services continues to make good use of your donations of scrap batting, thread, plastic zipper bags, and
fabric. All of these items go into making or storing quilts.
Please join us for an hour or for the day – we have a project to fit your time constraints.
Remember – chocolate, homemade cookies, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and lots of fun and
laughter. Do bring a lunch or a snack. If you cannot attend CS but would like to help, please
contact me. No need to bring supplies – we also have sewing machines, rulers and rotary
cutters, fabric, and thread.

HOME WORKSHOPS
We are excited to have Home Workshops within our guild. These workshops, (classes) will be offered
on the third Thursday of each month at the Seventh Day Adventist Church. We will be sharing this
space with our Community Service. These workshops are to give members the opportunity to share
skills with one another, to get to know each other and to have fun! There will be a chance to sign-up for the
workshop at each meeting with samples as to what the class that month will be and who will be teaching.
We are looking for members to share their technique or special pattern with others.

How to Envelope a Quilt

Ina will be sharing her technique to Envelope a Quilt at this class. For this class we will furnish kits that
have a small pre-printed panel, the backing and the batting for the quilt. These supplies came out of
Community Service, so when the quilts are finished, they will go back to CS for their donations in the
community. You MUST SIGN- UP for the class ! And receive a supply list. We have room for 15 and have
that many kits. If you sign up and can not attend please let us know so we can give your space to some on
the waiting list. Even if you know how to make an Envelope Quilt, come join us for a FUN learning
experience with Ina.

Our own Sandra Bruce is the April speaker. During her presentation she will
share her background and work, as well as an overview of her process called
“Material Matrix”, explaining how it all comes together using color, design,
composition and serendipity!
Workshop: April 9th!

In this workshop, Sandra has students use a photo, which she supplies, to experience and learn her
Material Matrix process. The class is about the process, and all will be following the steps along
with her. Some of the points covered include: What makes a good photo for a quilt; How to
interpret a photo using a grid; value and color; curved piecing; using a mix of prints and solids;
and ideas about quilting. The class is about the process, and her goal is to have each student
leave the class confident that they will be able to finish her quilt and go on to more complicated
images. The supply list is short and sweet!
