Double Play Mechanic - Central Maine Board of Approved Baseball

THE DOUBLE PLAY- Two Man Crew
Principle: Drift-Come Back- Get set- Make Call
Base Umpire:
-
From the C position bust to 1B side if pitcher then: DRIFT toward 1B.
Watch the first fielder field and throw the ball.
Watch the second fielder catch the ball, release the ball, and follow the ball ½
way to 1B, then get set to make the call.
Watch the fielder’s body part touching the base, listen for the sound of the
ball, find the ball in the hand/glove, and then make the call. (Timing)
From the B position it is the same but you don’t have to bust past the pitcher.
Ball bobbled/bad throw at 2B/Slow rollers/Runner stealing on the pitch.
Stop your DRIFT and come back into the play! Sell the call! Be ready for
another play.
BU should make all safes/outs calls on the three bases.
Plate Umpire
Get out of dirt heading to 3B side of pitcher.
Watch play at 2B then start drifting to 1B side of pitcher to look for obst/int/
pulled foot at 1B.
Watch all fielders’ fielding/throwing balls and runners involved. Give BU first
shot then if no call then PU make the int/obst calls.
REVIEW:
BU: Watch fielders field ball, runners coming in to bases, throw ball, watch the
ball ½ way, then turn and get set to see the play. Find the ball and make the call.
BU: Leave the dirt area; watch all of the above longer than the PU, Go from 3B
side of pitcher to the 1B side of pitcher and get set to help.
