“I studied, but the questions on the test were different than what
we covered in class.” “I work nights, so I don’t have time to do the
assignments.” “My teacher is so boring that he’s making me fail the
class.” “Why do I even need this course, anyway?”
Do these statements sound familiar? Many students possess the
intellectual capability to succeed in their chosen program but fail to
reach their academic potential due to a lack of study skills or selfmanagement skills, and in particular due to an unwillingness to take
personal responsibility for their experiences and outcomes at college.
While your program may not have an entire course dedicated to
student success, we can show you some easy and fun techniques that
you can employ to incorporate study skills and success strategies into
your curriculum, whatever subject you may teach.
Formative Feedback: much more than just evaluation

Feedback is a vital part of the knowledge and skills acquisition
process. It can also engage and motivate students to learn. Too often,
however, teachers and students think of feedback as an evaluation
that takes place at the end of the learning process. In this workshop,
you’ll explore the different ways that formative feedback can help
learners and teachers communicate expectations and reflect on what’s
working (and what isn’t) in the class to facilitate learning. You’ll learn
practical strategies that you can use in your classes right away.
Improve Your Voice

Does your job involve a lot of speaking? We could spend hours
preparing what it is we want to say, but if the voice can’t effectively
communicate the message, the audience tunes out and the message
is lost.
Speaking and breathing are natural functions, but speaking is the end
result of a series of reflexive physical actions and body placement we
must become aware of, in order to gain understanding and mastery
of our vocal instrument. Some reconditioning will result in a new, freer
voice... your natural, distinct voice!
In this short, interactive workshop, you’ll:

Learn some exercises to open up your voice and keep your voice
healthy
Using Smart Phones & Social Media in Classroom Teaching

In teaching photography and design courses, I have been
experimenting with methods of engaging students with technology
and new media. In this workshop I will share some insights and ideas
that can be relevant to a wide variety of course content to increase
student engagement and enthusiasm, in the classroom.

turn into rowdy competitions filled with more complaints than
comprehension? Do time constraints prevent you from running review
sessions in class? Come get some fresh ideas that will help you
provide valuable review activities and materials for your students.
Using the Case Method in College Classes

This session will introduce faculty to the case method and adapting
it for our college students. We’ll use a short case to demonstrate the
three-part method and then discuss how cases can be integrated into
non-traditional disciplines. We’ll also talk about resources Humber
has to support case teaching. Bring your questions, curiosity and
enthusiasm for student-centered learning!
Integrating Technology

Can technology help you make your classroom run more smoothly and
save you some time? Come to the lab and learn about integrating
technology into your classroom. Topics include: google tools,
YouTube, cloud storage, mobile apps and social media.

Explore the powerful connection between speech and gesture, and
the importance of using them together. Discover how a Lightboard
leverages an instructor’s natural tendency to use gestures to
enhance learning.
