SPRING 2015
Letter from the
President
Community
Clean-Up Day
As I write this, there remains the possibility of additional snow. For budget
purposes we hope that this doesn’t occur. Currently we are over budget for
snow removal.
Saturday, April 18
9:00 am–Noon
Coming soon is registration for the Pool. Look for the notice on our message
board on Centrewood Drive or in the newsletter. A friendly reminder: you must
be current with your HOA dues in order to register for the pool.
Pizza will be served at noon!
The Community Clean-up Day is scheduled for April 18 from 9:00 am until
noon. It’s a great way to meet some of your neighbors and make a difference
in the neighborhood.
With spring on its way, the flowers are beginning to pop-up…also popping up
will be for-sale signs. Don’t let unapproved exterior changes impact the sale of
your house. Another reminder regarding exterior changes to your home:
most changes require the completion of an exterior alteration application. The
request for a change is reviewed by the Architectural Review Board to ensure
it is in conformity with Centre Ridge Regent’s Architectural Guidelines. The
ARB will approve the change request if it conforms to the Architectural
Guidelines. If you sell your house at a later date an inspection is conducted of
the property. If there are changes to the property that have not been approved,
this could delay the sale of your home. If exterior changes are completed
without the proper approval, it will be noted on the resale documents. This
issue will have to be resolved prior to settlement of the sale.
Although Centre Ridge Regent hasn’t had an active Neighborhood Watch
program for a while, as good neighbors each of us can be aware of what may
be occurring outside your home. If something doesn’t seem right and if it
appears to be suspicious activity you should call the non-emergency police
number at 703-691-2131 and advise them what you have observed. The
police will dispatch an officer to the area and determine what action, if any
may be necessary.
Happy Spring!
Jim
From

Clean, Green Air
Believe it or not, the air inside your home
may be less healthy than the air outdoors.
From pollutants like volatile organic compounds (e.g., chemicals in paints, cleaning
supplies, building materials, furnishings, pesticides, air fresheners and dry-cleaned items) to gases (like radon and carbon dioxide) to second-hand smoke, modern, well-insulated
homes can actually trap pollutants, thus raising their potential for harm. Several common houseplants, however, can
help you breathe easier by increasing oxygen levels and
removing toxins from the air.
Below is a list of ten natural air purifiers. For maximum
effectiveness, aim for at least two plants in 10- to 12-inch
pots per 100 square feet of space. And be sure not to
overwater your plants, which can lead to mold—another
pollutant to watch out for.
English Ivy
Golden Pothos
Lady Palm
Wax Begonia
Boston Fern
Red-Edged Dracaena
Snake Plant
Spider Plant
Peace Lily (This variety is poisonous to pets, so place with
caution)

WELCOME TO SPRING!
Spring Cleaning: How to Donate Used Items Efficiently
Spring cleaning is right around the corner, and for many homeowners that could mean out with the “old” and in with
the “new” - but what to do with the “old” when it’s not quite ready for the landfill? Donating used items is a great
option as long as you do a little homework to find out which local organizations and donation centers are most
appropriate for the items you’d like to give away. Use the following tips as a guideline for determining what goes
where and how to get it there.
*
*
Many items are eligible for donation. You might
be surprised to learn exactly what items you can
donate. In addition to clothing and furniture, cars,
cell phones and other electronics, fitness equipment,
home appliances—even art supplies and old
towels—are widely
accepted
by
specialized
organizations. If
you’re looking to
donate a unique
item, or several of
the same items in
bulk, do some
further research
about local organizations and donation centers in
need of specific things.
Consider what shape your items are in to
determine where you donate. If you’re planning
to donate a broken refrigerator, make sure the
*
*
organization is aware the item is in need of repair.
Some donation centers accept broken items for
parts; however, most organizations and donation
centers prefer to accept gently used items in working
condition. Be sure to communicate the item’s
condition prior to arranging a donation.
After choosing where to donate, decide how
you’ll get the items to the organization.
Oftentimes large organizations and donation centers
are able to arrange a day and time to pick up your
unwanted items directly from your home or business.
Smaller organizations in need might instead have
certain days and times available for you to arrange
a drop off at a specified location.
Make sure to get a donation receipt for tax
purposes. Before donating, make a detailed list of
the items you’ll be giving away along with the
estimated values. When your items are picked up
or dropped off, request a receipt. Speaking with a
tax professional for advice also is a good idea.
Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
There are many small changes you can make to your outdoor - and indoor - surroundings to
adopt environmentally conscious habits thatcould reduce your carbon footprint. Luckily, making
careful choices can be easy with the right tools and information. Remember to check the
association’s regulations for guidelines and possible restrictions prior to beginning any projects.
Try composting. Compost is a natural way to enrich planting and gardening soil with nutrients from kitchen waste
like apple cores, banana peels and coffee grounds mixed with plant matter like yard clippings and fallen leaves.
The keys to successful compost are time, ventilation and heat. You can start with a medium-sized container and a
lid that includes ventilation holes placed in direct sunlight, if possible.
Grow your own herbs and garden veggies. Even if you don’t have an outdoor gardening space, you still can
grow herbs and vegetables indoors in small containers. Check your local home improvement store for seed packets
and guides for getting started. And, don’t forget to use your compost to enrich that soil!
Consider using drip irrigation. Drip irrigation uses a slow-drip watering method to hydrate your lawn and garden
on an ongoing basis instead of running a sprinkler system or hose for several intermittent periods. Be sure to
consult a landscape professional to learn about which plants and foliage benefit most.
Use solar-friendly outdoor lights. Several products on the market now employ the use of small solar sensors or
panels to help reduce the amount of electricity used for outdoor lighting accessories. Opt for energy efficient light
bulbs to go with your solar-friendly outdoor lighting accessories whenever possible.
