Autumn/Winter 2014 +1+ Marcs + “LIVE LIFE THREE SHADES BRIGHTER” COLLABORATORS This season, we’re inspired by a new generation of creative talent. Join us as we discover the thinkers, dreamers, creators and collaborators shaping a bright Australian future. Filmmaker Mike Bennett, actor Sean Keenan, musician Matilda Dods, knitwear designer Rachel Rutt and designer and artist Jedda-Daisy Culley live three shades brighter and inspire us to do the same. Here at Marcs we’ve always been inspired by Australia’s optimism, colour and energy. Even more so in those who fuel it with their creativity. In all that we do, we’re lucky enough to rub shoulders with a lot of them. It’s hard to explain that rush you get when you stumble onto a mutual passion. A shared energy can fuel ambition and bring clarity. This season we collaborated with five creatives who captured our imagination to reinterpret our autumn/winter collection with their fresh perspectives. It was a great adventure: we explored country, city and coast , swam in rivers, witnessed sunsets, got lost along the way. The Ingénue The Director And now, as summer comes to an end, we look forward to the six winter trends we know you’ll love as much as we do. Fresh and failsafe, the collection is uncompromising when it comes to style and quality. There are new hemlines to love, outerwear you’ll never need replace, and prints and textures that are anything but muted. We hope you enjoy and feel inspired. The Quiet Achiever Rachel Allen Creative Director of Marcs The Uncontrived The Adventurer +1+ The Ingénue “S tyle to me is being comfortable and presenting yourself how you want to be presented,” model and musician Matilda Dods explains. Dods knows what she wants and you know it’s just a matter of time before she gets it. She likes to sit by herself to “write it out”, her guitar and journal never far away. It’s a “form of self expression,” she’ll tell you with confidence and smile. a subsequent mentorship with renown soulstress Mama Kin. “She taught me a lot about communicating with other musicians. And then in turn to an audience.” edited as a music clip. She calls it “honest, sometimes rather sad” and admits that her music is “most likely with some kind of satirical undertone”. She is self aware and uncontrived all at once. Refreshingly honest about what her goals might be, celebrity isn’t one of them. “I don’t know where I want my music to take Dods’ Youtube channel is a mix of harmonised me yet,” she says. “As long as it’s still what Dods’ star is on the rise. She won the Blues covers – Lana Del Ray and Frank Ocean I’m passionate about and is still making me and Roots category at the 2013 Mullum Music done her way – as well as her own words, happy, I’m content to just let my creativity Festival Youth Mentorship competition and strummed on her guitar captured and grow and lead me where it wishes.” M+ “ S t y le to m e is bei n g co m fortable a n d p rese n ti n g y o u rself ho w y o u w a n t to be p rese n ted ” Short Circle Skirt $179 Pointelle Knit$159 Silk Shirt $159 Leather Biker Jacket $599 Silk Contrast Shirt $159 Animal A-Line Mini $159 Jumpsuit $199 +2+ +3+ Trending Style Icon Adjust the hemline and refresh your working wardrobe with texture and movement in a swinging midi skirt. In 60 seconds or less, he can tell the story you couldn’t articulate, capture the moment you missed and showcase a collection by capturing the sentiment. “I think there’s a bit of a formula at the moment... Especially in Australia,” says Bennett of fashion films. “People are a bit scared. It’s a new thing, they don’t know what to do with it yet.” Bennett, together with Nathan Lewis, created Joy Collective and a hatful of short fashion films we can’t help to watch over and over. A Fine Arts graduate, Bennett can find the quiet beauty in the everyday details. He’s interested in the way you got there, not where you were going. He’s also not afraid to take risks pushing the boundaries in every way. “If we had to stand on top of a car and go down a cliff to get the shot, we do it. We took a lot of risks at the start, we were young and we didn’t care.” McQueen Shirt $139 Moleskin Blazer $329 And his personal style? He’ll cringe if you ask him but the truth is he’s just particular as he is with his work. He’ll select those pieces that could otherwise go unnoticed; prefers his trousers a little wider and his coats a little longer. Derived from uniform, and no doubt why subconsciously it just feels that little bit more polished, the navy jacket is a crucial building block and a versatile investment in all its guises. Suit jacket, sports coat or blue bomber, the rules are universal; try layering from the bottom up; blue chinos, cords or denim jeans, a printed blue shirt or T-shirt, blue knit or tie and finish with the navy jacket. Experiment with accessories and add a belt or beanie for more casual options. +12+ +13+ Trending Chitten Slim Fit Shirt $139 Moleskin Blazer $329 Silk Tie $59 Panelled Textured Belt $59 Chitten Slim Fit Shirt $139 Moleskin Blazer $329 Silk Tie $59 Panelled Textured Belt $59 Suede Derby Shoe $159 Camo Shirt $139 Towner Blazer $329 Fitzroy Crombie Coat $399 Washington Shawl Knit $179 Bruton Bomber Jacket $329 Jimmy Chino $119 Suede Derby Shoe $279 McQueen Shirt $139 Calvary Cardigan $159 Cavendish Pea Coat $399 Panelled textured belt $59 +14+ +15+ Coney Knit $159 Crosby Waxed Jean $159 Suede Derby Shoe $279 Richer Poorer socks $15 “ Yeah , I ’ m l u c k y right n o w. West Australian-born, Sydney-based Keenan was awarded Best New Talent at the 2013 Logies and as well as being honoured with a Young Actors Award from the Australian Film Institute. +16+ No surprises then that he begins filming with Nicole Kidman and Hugo Weaving this month for new Australian film Strangerland out in 2015. “Yeah, I’m lucky right now,” Keenan says carefully. “If you stop feeling lucky, then you start getting arrogant.” At just 21, there’s no denying Keenan has somewhat of a young Paul Newman type quality and, perfectly blended with that contemporary city/surfer aesthetic, he has that something unique that can universally be appreciated.
