Co-op fortnight A co-op is a type of business that exists to serve its members. Members can be customers, employees or the local community, but they are always equal owners and each has a say in running the business and in its profits. Each co-op is independent to the other, and they fill all sorts of needs depending on what service they provide. 4 Food shops What has your local store been up to? 5 Local Food & Drink Meet our tastiest Essex-based producers! 6 Department Stores What is new this season? 7 Member News The latest speakers and our planned days out. 8 Travel Centres Today’s destination of choice, and Cooper’s recent adventures. Well done and enjoy your vouchers! www.chelmsfordstar.coop Welcome... The summer is here! Which means our food stores will be stocked up on ice lollies and Pimms, and both Quadrants will be offering the new season fashions. For my team, it’s time to get stuck in to as many school fetes, community days, Prides, festivals and store visits as possible, whilst crossing our fingers we stay dry. There’s only a few of us, but working together we get a lot done. ‘Working Together’ also happens to be the theme of Co-op Fortnight, which is discussed below. In the name of ‘co-operation’, this issue includes a special offer from our friends at the East of England Co-op, and there’s details of a large-scale clean up event we would love your help with. Plus, there’s a reminder of the competition we are running in partnership with the National Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, which closes in September. Enjoy! Kevin Bennett - Head of Membership What we’re talking about... Co-op Fortnight (20th June – 4th July) Something we often hear, particularly around Co-operative Fortnight (two weeks every year when different co-ops unite to highlight the benefits of working together) is “Oh, you’re not all the same then?” A ‘co-operative’ means a group of people have got together to achieve a single purpose. There are lots of different types, like those owned by the employees (worker co-ops), by the tenants (housing co-ops) or by the customers (retail co-ops, like Chelmsford Star), and they can provide anything from food to farming, healthcare to housing, wind farms to web design. But what they all have in common is a commitment to benefit their members or the community as a whole. You’ll often hear co-ops referring to their ‘values and principles’. This is a set of basic rules that they must all adhere to, such as democracy and equality. Basically, they all boil down to a simple promise. To be a fair and ethical business. This Co-operative Fortnight, co-ops all over the UK will be working together with a single aim; cleaning up the country. The Big Co-op Clean Up will see housing estates, parks, beaches and streets, or even just bedrooms, tidied up from Scotland to Cornwall. We hope to prove that together, when people and businesses cooperate, we can achieve so much more than we can alone. Co-op Facts: • 5450 co-op enterprises in the UK • UK Co-op Economy is worth £35.6 billion • This country has a combined co-op membership of 13.5 million – it’s the largest membership movement in the country! • There are 1.4 million different co-ops worldwide • Co-op Values include Self-help, Self Responsibility, Democracy, Equality, Equity and Solidarity. They made £250 for Children in Need and, according to Twitter, all 500 doughnuts were sold in ten minutes. That must be some kind of record! Colleagues at our newest store at The Sorrells have signed up ‘Friends of Hardie Park’ as a new community group, who hope to raise money for a skate park that local youths have designed. We have a number of refits taking place over the coming months, so now is an excellent time to let us know any changes you’d like us to incorporate, or any thoughts you have on our food stores. Remember, as a co-op member, it is YOUR business we are striving to improve! Animals looking for good homes! Chelmsford: Torquay Road also presented a Community Card cheque to local group, Friends of Chelmsford Resource Centre, who will use the £405 to hold social events for their members. 4 Our Broomfield Road store was relaunched in March, following a refit to renew fixtures and an update to the ranges. Ex-Mayor of Chelmsford Joyce Ashford, who has been a regular shopper at the store for over 40 years, cut the ribbon. She commented, For a limited time you can collect Farmyard Friends by earning stickers each time you shop in our food stores. Each cute animal is yours for 20 stickers, which are awarded at a rate of one per £5 spent, but hurry. The offer ends on the 5th July! Go to the Farmyard Friends section on our website for free colouring-in sheets of each character for little ones. “It’s such a lovely store with super staff and it’s remarkable what a good range they carry in a relatively small space.” The staff here go above and beyond when it comes to helping their elderly customers. All it takes are bite-sized pieces and a variety of colourful seasonal fruit, and is so simple even a small child can make it, as demonstrated here by Hugo, son of Broomfield member Jenna Reed. Ingredients • A selection of your favourite colourful fruits, bought from the co-op of course! • Honey and lemon juice for a dressing if desired, or co-op cream. Wash Preparation: • Wash fruit and cut into bite sized chunks (parents should supervise!) Method: • Make lemon honey dressing by whisking together equal rations of lemon juice & honey. Adjust acidity & sweetness to taste. Alternatively, a blob of co-operative cream is just the ticket. Tickets are available for £7.50 (concessions are available) from www.essexfoodfestival.co.uk and include cooking demos, wine-tasting, live music and a food court. Mix AGM Update: Partly due to our work with local suppliers and producers, we estimate that for every £1 spent with us 31p is re-invested back into the local community. Eat! You offer a great service, and the new shop in The Sorrells is so very handy. Thank you. Mrs Smallman, Corringham Co-operative update... 5 Summer Trends Key trends this month are boho dresses or flared trousers, clashing florals and rockstar glam. It’s all about the seventies, darling! Ladies, look for shirt dresses, side split skirts, cropped denim, tiny checked gingham, bold stripes or floral prints. Yellow is big, as is black, white and monochrome. Men, you should be looking for slim fit jackets, button down shirts, denim, bold stripes and African inspired florals. For you, blue is the new black this season, but most bold colours will work. We are new to Chelmsford, and the service and help we received at Quadrant were enough in themselves to justify our move! Peter & Carole Freeman, Boreham AGM Update: According to a survey taken of furniture buyers, 95.7% were satisfied or very satisfied with the service provided. 6 @CStarCoop Great British Success New In! Over 300 people attended, raising an impressive £2,000 for our chosen charities. Local business owner Amanda Lucia said, “We received dozens of vouchers within the first few weeks, and the majority were from new faces. I’m very happy to be taking part!” We have in our archives a number of recorded interviews with ex-employees and we are working with the Essex Records Office, and their new lotteryfunded ‘You Are Hear’ project, to find ways to share their experiences with the public. In order to do this, we need to obtain permission from their families. Can anyone help us track the relatives of the following members? Funeral Services A Perfect Keepsake A new option available from our funeral team is the option of a beautifully carved oak keepsake for the bereaved. The ‘Tribute Heart’ fits in the palm of your hand, and contains either a tiny quantity of ashes, a piece of jewellery, lock of hair or a sample of favourite perfume, along with a photo of the loved one. It can also be engraved with their name. Free Obituaries We now offer a free online obituary with every funeral, which not only allows the bereaved to communicate details to those across the world but also acts as a secure platform for friends and family to share condolences and memories of the loved one they have lost. This is the latest in a long line of unique mementos available to our clients, which also includes ash-infused glass paperweights, diamonds and fire-works. Day Out For Chelmsford Group pEric Idle Looking On The Bright Side Already the soundtrack to people’s lives, pop music has now become the sound track to their deaths too as it now outplays traditional hymns at funerals by two to one, according to research. Eric Idle’s ‘Always Look On The Bright Side’ was named most popular choice by those planning their own funeral, beating Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ and Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’. High on the list was also the Muppet theme-tune, ‘It’s Time To Face The Music’, and even the clock from Channel Four’s ‘Countdown’ made an appearance. “Modern funerals are very much about personal choice and this is often reflected in the choice of music,” said a funeral representative. “Lyrics can either acknowledge how much a person will be missed or they can serve as a reminder of their humour.” The Baddow and Broomfield bereavement support groups organised a trip out to a popular garden-centre in April. Sixteen of our regular members visited Polhill in Kent for the day, continuing to support each other through sharing memories and experiences, but also planning ahead by planting their gardens. Craig Jackson, our funeral operations manager, said, “We’re delighted to be able to offer this to our clients. The feedback so far has been very positive, and it seems to be providing a great source of comfort.” To find out more about our services offered, view our online film at: www.chelmsfordstarfunerals.co.uk If you feel you would benefit from one of our support groups, call 0800 0284808 any time to find your nearest meeting. Why? Co-operatives are a way for people to collectively ‘do it for themselves’ whether that’s responding to a market opportunity or meeting a need. They engage people in their own solutions and enable members to share the risks, costs, but also the profits of the business. They draw on the knowledge, skills and expertise that diverse membership brings. How? Setting a co-op up is similar to setting up any business - you need to identify a market, offer products or services, arrange labour, etc. The main difference is that it must be owned and operated by its members - primarily to meet their needs, but also to provide wider economic, social and environmental benefits. Use these steps as a guide: A Co-operative Vision We love to ‘co-operate’ with others, particularly when it means we can provide our members with additional benefits , and this is particularly true when it comes to our work with other co-ops. We’re pleased to say we are supporting the Anglia-based East of England society with a new venture in Braintree. • Outline a broad plan: what are the objectives of the business? • Discuss the structure: who are the members and what will their benefits be? • Develop a business plan. • Do you need employees? This would limit the liability of your members. • Carry out detailed financial planning. • Look for start-up finance. Many co-ops do this by raising money from members. • Draw up an action plan, including performance standards and staff policies. • Develop a marketing plan. • Communication: How will your members have their say? • Don’t be afraid to ask for help: Visit www.uk.coop for some excellent advice. The East of England Co-op, who are already trusted to provide affordable, quality eye care across Suffolk and Essex, have opened a new optical branch in George Yard, near our Braintree Quadrant. They carry a wide range of frames for the family, including exclusive designer brands such as Oakley and Michael Kors, and currently have a competition running to win a pair of Tom Ford frames. “The Big Co-op Clean will make a difference to many local communities, as well as introduce people to the idea of co-operation - proving that we can achieve more together than we can on our own,” said a representative. On the 4th July, from 10am - 2pm, we’ve organised a Clean Up July event for the centre of Chelmsford City and we need volunteers! Together with the local council, we’ll be cleaning up the river and the parks near our Quadrant department store. Lunch will be provided! To register your interest, please email [email protected]. 4th Organise a clean up of your own! The event saw litterpicking, graffiti removal, emergency services and teams from the DVLA, cleaning crews and other government services working together to rejuvenate the local estate. Chelmsford Star was on hand to provide lunches to all the volunteers. We joined the Stanford-le-Hope community for a fund-raiser in lateMarch, as locals collected money for a new skate park and toilet block for Hardie Park, near to our Sorrells store. This event, aimed at 13 and 14 year olds, asked them to create a concept, design and financial plan for a food business, and Chelmsford Star was on hand to provide advice. Vanessa Howard, our Head of Marketing, said, “I was impressed by the creativity displayed, and the students had a real grasp of what was needed to make a successful business.” A member of our Youth Council, Erin Raif from St Clere’s school, organised a political debate between local MP’s from the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and UKIP. Despite being too young to vote himself, he and a packed hall of sixth-formers demonstrated that many younger people are keen to have their say and get involved in politics despite the opposite being portrayed in the media.
