FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Education Week
We had some parents come in and visit classrooms
during the week to see what the children were working
on. I hope it was both enlightening and beneficial for
those parents who visited. The children have been
busy with writing, reading, numeracy and Inquiry
Learning in particular. The Foundation children have
been busy learning about their community, Year 1’s
have been busy writing recounts of their Karkarook
Park excursion, Year 2 have been knee deep in
studying water, Year 3’s have been looking at Koori
studies, Year 4’s have been looking at sustainability
and how to help the environment, Year 5 have been
looking closely at Natural Disasters and how they
occur and Year 6 have been studying “What is
Courage?” and looking at the plight of refugees and
migrants. I must say using mars bars to study tectonic

plate movement under the Earth’s surface was an
interesting science idea!
Our four Foundation teachers have done a great job
with the planning and organisation.
Year 6 Camp
Student Disco
At the time of writing the Year 6 children will be making
their way back from Ace Hi camp on the Peninsula.
The children have had a fantastic time with many
challenges being met and conquered. Horse riding and
the giant rope swing are among the many highlights. I
must especially thank the wonderful staff who gave up
valuable family time to ensure the children enjoyed
their time down there: Mrs Carroll, Ms Boreham, Mrs
Presnell, Mrs McLeod, Mr Harrison, Mrs Nicholson and
Mr Walmsley.
The student disco is on again next Friday 29 May in
the school hall. Foundation -Year 2 will be on from
5.30-6.45 and Year 3 -Year 6 will be on from 7pm8.30pm.
th
Graffiti
The hall certainly looks much better with the removal of
graffiti from its walls. This costs the school a lot of
money so I am hoping that we won’t have as many
problems with it in the near future.
District Cross Country
The District Cross Country was held on Wednesday at
the Keysborough Playing Fields. We had quite a few
representatives from Years 3-6 competing. The children
were bussed there and back to school. The 11 and 12
year old children ran a 3km course and the 10 year
olds managed to run a 2km course. Thank you to Mrs
Holmes who manned a checkpoint along the course
and also washed our sports uniforms. Congratulations
on a magnificent effort to the following place getters:
Matthew E. and Cameron S. both of whom managed to
win their age group against the best in the District,
th
Paris X. who came 2nd, Jai C. 3rd, Celine F. 8 and
th
Sam P. who came in 10 . These children will be
moving on to participate in the Division Cross Country.
Thank you also to Mrs Kerr and Mr Bourke for their
wonderful organisation.
Australian Early Development
Census
The Foundation teachers have been completing the
Australian Early Development Census with some of
our Foundation children. It measures how well five
year olds are progressing towards the transition to
school, it also measures how well our children are
faring over time and reflects community actions to
support children’s continuing development.

Driving
We have replaced the Children’s Crossing flags in
Silver St after they were stolen during the week before
last. If children and parents are waiting to cross, cars
must slow down and stop if the flags are displayed at
the crossing. It was comforting to note that this was
occurring while I was watching earlier in the week. The
safety of our children should be of paramount
importance to all of our community when arriving and
leaving the school.
2016 Foundation Transition
The first of our Foundation transition sessions
commences today with next year’s Foundation children
attending a literacy activity in the Foundation rooms.
The sale is on Wednesday 27th
May from 3.00 - 4.30 pm in the
hall.

CEPS KIDS ARE FRIENDLY KIDS
This term we are working on RESPECT
and next week we are looking at
Respecting Adults
There are many adults around our school and homes who help us. It may be your teacher,
the parents working with you in the classroom, perhaps your next door neighbour.
Sometimes we do not realise it, but these people are always looking after us, making sure we
are safe and happy. A great way to show these people that we do appreciate their help and
concern is by showing them respect. We can do this in lots of ways –




by saying please and thankyou
by giving way
by offering to help
just by listening when they speak
Respecting adults is important. All of us would like people to respect us, and we certainly
expect people to respect the adults we know well, like our parents and grandparents.
Respecting adults shows everyone that we are friendly and appreciative children at
Cheltenham East.

On the 20th May, thirty-five children headed off to Mentone Playing Fields to compete

What great running efforts by all children who competed, with a number of children
moving forward to the Division competition.
