The Maltese Hat with Liz Avery
Sunday, September 22 12:00-3:00 pm
I fell in love with EZ’s designing when I first knit this hat: it has all the garter-y goodness
and shaping that epitomize her genius. We’ll knit the earflaps flat in short rows and join
to knit the hat in the round, all in a super bulky yarn that will fly off your needles. I
modified mine to make a less pointy top, but slower decreasing and a jaunty tassle make
it fun for the young at heart. We will also discuss sizing it down for kids. ♥♥ $30
The Triton Hat with Liz Avery

Also called the Spiral or Conch, this hat twists up to a point like a snail—fun for both
kids and grown ups to wear. It is knitted like lightning out of super bulky yarn—you’ll be

The Ganomy Hat with Heather Black

As Elizabeth Zimmermann said, the Ganomy hat is an "endearing object." The shape
reminded Elizabeth of a gnome hat, and the name for it was given after she heard
‘gnome’ mispronounced in a way that pleased her. Based on the shaping principle of
miters, the cleverly constructed Ganomy hat will keep your ears warm and leave a smile
on your face. Stop in and try on our store sample. ♥♥ $20
The Icelandic Hat with Heather Black
Saturday, November 9 1:00-4:00 pm
The Icelandic Hat is an excellent opportunity to try Ístex Plötulopi, the unusual plates of
unspun wool that are used to create traditional Icelandic sweaters, called Lopapeysa. The

lower and upper half of the hat are different colors beautifully blended by a Bohusinspired motif. This is a good intro to colorwork or a great way to practice your twohanded stranded knitting! ♥♥ $30

Hitchhiker Scarf/Shawl with Liz Avery

You may have seen this shawl hanging in the shop or in Ravelry’s list of their most
popular patterns. Hitchhiker is a little chunk of squishy garter stitch that invites you to
modify its size—make it a scarf or a shawl!—and play with those gorgeous 2-row stripes
that are so beautiful. You’ll learn what pitfalls to avoid and be well on your way to a

Haruni Shawl with Maggie Cerrina

If you've ever wanted to try knitting a lace shawl, this is a great way to start. Haruni is a
top-down, fingering weight shawl with a great lace pattern and lots of options. We'll go
over garter-tab starts, lace knitting techniques, the crochet bindoff, and much more, along
with how to read a chart! Prerequisites: Basic knitting knowledge, increases, and

How to Knit a Sweater That Fits with Sylvie Schuresko
Sunday, October 6 1:30-4:30 pm
Commercial sweater patterns are designed for an 'average' body type, but most of us
aren't average - we're taller, shorter, curvier, leaner, etc. In this class, you'll learn to
modify sweater patterns to fit your own body. We'll discuss proper measurements, using
pattern schematics, gauge, picking the right size for your sweater, adding or changing
waist and bust shaping, changing torso and arm lengths, combining sizes, and any other
fit questions you may have. Feel free to bring any sweaters you've made that didn't quite
work out and we can talk about them. Prerequisites: Basic knitting knowledge, increase,
and decrease. Previous sweater knitting experience may be helpful but is not
necessary. $30
Echo Flower Shawl with Maggie Cerrina
Wednesdays, December 4, 11 & 18 6:00-8:00 pm
Make the gorgeous Echo Flower shawl while learning some basic features of Estonian
lace! This class will cover many basic lace techniques, along with more involved skills
like double decreases and multiple charts, and the ever infamous nupps and flower
stitches characteristic of Estonian lace. Prerequisites: Basic lace knowledge (e.g.,

Shades of Color Crocheted Shawl with Lynn Peterson

If you already have basic crochet stitches under your belt, grab a single skein of sock
yarn and you can make a beautiful, easy shawl. The pattern was designed to show off
striping or gradient yarns, but a solid or variegated shawl would be elegant, too! Learn to
modify the shawl to be larger and you’ll have a lovely shawl to warm your shoulders this

Creating Recycled Yarn out of T-Shirts with Kristy Russum

Here’s an exciting new technique that reuses that pile of old t-shirts you have lying
around…learn to turn it into yarn! Tricks include how to cut up the shirts, stretch the
material, and keep it from unraveling. Then you’ll be set to take the yarn home and knit,

Learn how to do cables while making a stylish, cabled neckwarmer! Cables are one of the
most fashionable ways to add texture, depth, and interest to knitted fabric. Although
cables look complex, they are actually quite simple. This class will introduce you to the
basics of knitting cables. You will learn how to make left and right leaning cables, how to
read a chart, and a few hints and tricks to take your knitting in new directions, and get a

If you know how to knit in the round, you’re ready to knit and felt a small project bag! A
long time favorite pattern, the Lucy Bag begins with the ingenious Emily Ocker’s
Circular Cast On and ends with interlocking handles/straps that keep your items well

Striped Christmas Stocking with Julie Fisk

Have yourself a holly-jolly holiday by learning to knit a sock while crafting a Christmas
heirloom! Julie’s stripey stocking class includes a bevy of skills: Judy Becker’s Magic
Cast-on, a peasant/afterthought heel, and a jogless jog. She’ll provide some ideas for
embellishments, too, using I-cord, chain sts, and (of course!) beads, sequins and glue.

Circular Yoke Sweater using EPS — Elizabeth’s (Zimmermann) Percentage System
Mondays, Sept 17 & 24, Oct 15 & 29, & Nov 19 6:00-8:00 pm
EPS is Elizabeth Zimmermann’s method of constructing a custom-fitted garment with a
seamless yoke style: pullover or cardigan. We will swatch, do math, and knit our way
through the yoke sweater of your choice. You can start with an existing pattern, or create
your own from scratch. You will be stunned at how much control you have over your
knitting! Amy will demonstrate lots of techniques as we bump into them. Each student

Weaving on a Cricket Loom with Liz Avery

Expand your fiber arts skills this fall by learning to weave on a small, beginner table
loom from Ashford. Create a scarf, runner, pillow or bag as you learn the parts of the
loom, how to set up the loom (also called dressing a loom) and how to make different
textures and patterns in your cloth. Finally, learn to finish your fabric when it is off the
loom and how to use an equation to determine yarn needed for a project. We will have
looms to borrow for the class or you can preorder one of these economical, workhorse
Cricket looms for yourself. $30

Join us as we delve into color and paint our own fiber masterpieces of yarn and fiber.
Beginning or continuing dyers are welcome as we study the application of dye,

Problem Solving and Fixing Mistakes with Liz Avery

Are you uncertain about the proper way to pick up a dropped stitch? Still not sure about
the proper stitch mount? Do you need to learn how to “un-knit”? Discover holes and
don’t know how they got there? This is the class for you! We will spend two hours
concentrating on the most common mistakes that happen in knitting and the most
efficient ways to fix them. Students call this the “fearless knitting” class! ♥ $20

Felting By Hand with Liz Avery

Learn the principles of felting wool roving while creating a pincushion or sachet. Using
only unspun wool, water, soap, and your own two hands, Liz will take you through the
process of manipulating a lump of wool into a colorful creation of fiber art. All materials

leave class with a great, basic crochet booklet. This class is great for those who have

Spinning
Beginning Drop Spindle Spinning with Liz Avery

Liz will teach you how to make your own yarn! If you are curious about spinning, drop
spindling is a fun, portable, and inexpensive way to start out. Dust off your spindle or use
one of ours. Practice roving is included in the course fee. Spindles and extra roving will
be available for purchase. $25
Intro to Wheel Spinning with Liz Avery
Call to set up private lesson with Liz this fall.
Begin your spinning career or come for a refresher! Liz will take you through the basics
of spinning wool into yarn on a spinning wheel. Class includes use of our spinning wheel
unless you would prefer to practice on your own wheel. Roving is available for purchase.

Afraid to tackle that Dale of Norway, Fair Isle, Kaffe Fassett, Heirloom Lace,
steeked, etc. project? Do you need a guiding hand to realize your knitting potential?
Whatever it is, this workshop is for you. Amy will help you to meet your individual
knitting goals. Knitters can pick any project to work on (and get help with) throughout
the semester. Learn new knitting techniques and share ideas and experiences with other
members of the group. Come for the knitting help and stay for the camaraderie! All levels
of knitters are warmly welcomed.
This workshop is priced by the class for flexibility. Purchase a single lesson or
prepay for a set number of classes. Stuck on a project? Need help getting through a
difficult section of knitting or sewing your sweater together? Amy is here for you!
Amy Detjen teaches knitting at guilds and events across the nation, assists at Meg Swansen’s Knitting
Camp (for 15+ years!), and has been called an “outstanding knitting visionary.” She is a talented knitting
architect, designer and technical editor. She is passionate about teaching knitting and helping people
learn about their knitting options. Take a class and be amazed by how much you learn and how hard you
laugh.
The Sow’s Ear Class Policy
Many of our classes fill up quickly. To guarantee a space please
register as soon as possible. Payment in full guarantees your space. We
accept payment in the store, over the phone or by check via mail. We
consider your registration a commitment to take the class. We order
supplies and make a commitment to the teacher based upon your
registration.
Please be sure you can attend the first session before you sign up for
a class. The first class session provides the foundation of skills for
the entire class. Classes start promptly, so be sure to have all
materials ready to go.
If you cancel a week or more before the beginning date of the class,
your class fee will be refunded. If you cancel between forty-eight
hours and a week's notice, your class fee will be transferable to
another class within the following calendar year. The cost of the class
is neither refundable nor transferable forty-eight hours before the
class begins. A full refund will be made if we cancel a class.
