At some point, all teachers and providers deal with the frustration of
having a toddler crying or kicking in the middle of an activity, or having a 4-year-old disobey and challenge rules or limits. Although these
behaviors are often hard for adults to deal with, they are very normal
for children in these age groups. With time and positive guidance
from adults, these “trying” behaviors usually go away. The term
“challenging behavior” is often used to describe children’s “problem”
behaviors that do not go away over time or after using developmentally appropriate strategies to address the behavior. This session will
explore what children are trying to communicate when they exhibit
challenging behavior and how adults
should respond.
Presenter: Christy Hill LarsonSpecial Projects Coordinator, Early
Childhood Project
