4 - Child & Youth Finance International

4th Child & Youth Finance International Summit and
Awards Ceremony
2015 is a monumental year for the Child and Youth Finance Movement. Youth financial inclusion is a priority on the
G20 Agenda for 2015, economic inclusion will be a key goal in the post-2015 development agenda, and Global
Citizenship Education (GCED) is a primary working topic for global multilaterals. Right from the start, key players have
agreed that a focus on economic citizenship for children and youth will remain of utmost importance in 2015. This
prioritization makes it a crucial year for the efforts of the Child & Youth Finance International (CYFI) Network in scaling
up action and reaching the Movement’s goal of reaching 100 million children and youth by the end of 2015.
The 4th Child & Youth Finance International Summit and Awards Ceremony will convene government officials, senior
practitioners, innovators and young people themselves to address the gap between action and impact across the
Child and Youth Finance Movement. Together discussions will be accelerated, best practices shared and duplicated
and concrete steps taken in the development of a global plan of action for youth economic citizenship.
For the first time in its history, the CYFI Summit will take place in the Gulf, in the capital of the United Arab Emirates
(UAE), Abu Dhabi, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed AI Nahyan, the UAE Minister of
Foreign Affairs and the Chairman of the Emirates Foundation. CYFI and EF will hold the event at the Abu Dhabi
National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from June 9th-11th, 2015. The meeting will examine how the policies and
practices around financial inclusion and education can help to develop the next generation of financially literate and
empowered economic citizens. The Summit will present the latest innovations and achievements in this field in order
to equip practitioners and policy makers with the right tools to develop both national and global plans for youth
economic citizenship.
Following CYFI's High Level Stakeholder Annual Meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in May 2014, which was
attended by 340 participants from 90 countries, members of the CYF Movement were pleased to see financial
inclusion for children and youth included in the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Post-2015 Development
Agenda. This year, the Summit will further build on this success by expanding specific targets for financial inclusion,
economic citizenship and sustainable livelihoods for young people around the world.
The Key Objectives of the Summit are to:






Share innovations and best practices from the field of youth economic citizenship
Explore effective project models that can be taken to scale
Celebrate outstanding accomplishments from the CYFI Network
Develop country action plans with the goal of reaching 100 million children and youth with financial services
and Economic Citizenship Education by end of 2015
Offer hands on workshops and knowledge sharing sessions to promote institutional learning and the
dissemination of best practice
Inspire active youth participation and outreach both nationally and internationally
In this Summit Program, you will find an introduction to the Child and Youth Finance Movement, details of this year’s
Summit, an exploration of the Summit’s themes, logistical information and the detailed program schedule.

ii. Getting around Abu Dhabi
Taxis
Taxis are the most common and affordable form of transport in Abu Dhabi. The fleet of taxis in Abu Dhabi is vast and you
can flag a taxi anywhere. Taxis can also be booked over the TransAD hotline (600 535353). There are different types of
taxis in Abu Dhabi, and the most common are the silver taxis which are operated by authorised taxi companies. The rates
are established by a meter. The white and gold colored taxis are older and being phased out. Although they are also
provided with meters, drivers may negotiate the fare in advance. The recently introduced pink taxis are exclusively for
female passengers and boys under the age of 10. They are driven by women and have the same fares as the silver taxis.
The following advices are useful to know for taxi passengers in Abu Dhabi:







Make sure that the driver has switched on the meter.
Most drivers are familiar with landmarks, such as hotels, shopping malls and parks, rather than street names.
The taxis fares are higher during the night time (from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM).
Pay in cash; credit cards are not accepted.
Tips are not mandatory, but appreciated.
Enter the taxi from the right side as the door behind the driver is usually locked.
Female passengers usually sit in the back of the car.
Buses

4th Child & Youth Finance International Summit and Awards Ceremony
A modern fleet of air-conditioned public buses, managed by the Department of Transport (DoT), operates in Abu Dhabi
Island, Abu Dhabi’s suburbs, Al Ain and the Western Region. While all buses serving the domestic routes within Abu
Dhabi City are operated around the clock every day, the Department is constantly improving the connections and
frequencies on other routes. The fare for a single trip inside Abu Dhabi City is AED 2 (0.50 EURO, 0.75 USD) which has to
be put in the box next to the driver when entering the bus. For suburban areas, the fare starts from AED 2 in addition to 5
Fils per kilometres with AED 5 being the average.

About Abu Dhabi
The origins of Abu Dhabi city can be traced to the mid-1700s. Legend has it that Sheikh Dhiyab of the Bani Yas tribe
ordered his son, Sheikh Shakh, to establish a settlement on the site of a rare fresh water spring that had been discovered
by gazelle hunters. The name Abu Dhabi means ‘Father of the Gazelle’. The name of the capital city of the United Arab
Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi, is also the largest of the seven individual emirates that make up the country. The UAE was
created as a federation and became a unified independent sovereign state in 1971. With some 10% of the world's known
oil reserves, Abu Dhabi ranks as the richest of the Emirates and a global economic powerhouse in its own right.
Half Day Tour: Monday June 8th or Friday June 12th
Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey Experience, 14:00 – 17:00
The Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey experience is the first cultural and tourism product of its kind in the capital. This is a unique
educational and entertaining experience to enrich people’s knowledge on the history of the pearling industry in the
Arabian Gulf region, and how our forefathers dedicated their lives to collect thousands of seashells in hope to find a
pearl. This program is offered and managed by Emirati & International Cultural experts & guides.
During the tour the guide will explain to you about the pearling industry, as you listen to traditional "hoyamal" music
which involve authentic cheering songs the pearling men used to sing. The guides will provide the oysters, which they get
fresh from the sea, and then the process of opening the oysters and searching for the pearls begins.
Participants can take photos of the great nature surrounding them, enjoy the beautiful pearls and sample some
traditional food and beverages.
The trip is about 60 to 90 minutes maximum and our boat can only take 20 people per tour. Each guest will be
guaranteed one pearl.

Abu Dhabi City Tour, 9:30 – 17:00
Sheikh Zayed Mosque: The third largest mosque in the world. This mosque is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al
Nahyan who was the founder and the first President of the United Arab Emirates. He is also buried there. The mosque
occupies a large area between Mussafah Bridge and Maqta Bridge. Non-Muslims generally cannot enter mosques in UAE
but Sheikh Zayed Mosque is an exception. Guests would need to adhere to the dress code of the Mosque for them to
enter the mosque.
Manarat Al Saadiyat: Manarat Al Saadiyat means ‘the place of Enlightenment’. It is a 15,400 square metre arts and
culture centre, designed to bring the vision of the island to life through The Saadiyat Story. The venue also features four
gallery spaces. Located on Saadiyat, this artistic venue houses TDIC exhibitions with international collections from around
the world, including three major galleries, a central events gallery, sales centre and 250-seat theatre
Masdar City: Abu Dhabi is designing the world’s first zero-carbon, zero-waste city. Named Masdar City, which means
“the source.” Although the desert might seem an unlikely location for such a large sustainable undertaking, Masdar will
tread lightly on the landscape by harnessing solar power and relying on construction features that resist high
temperatures, including extra shading and slab cooling. Its design is rooted in the Arabic tradition of walled cities—but
Masdar’s stone-and-mud walls will be covered in photovoltaic panels capable of generating 130 megawatts. Along the
site’s northern edge, the walls will be more permeable to let in breezes. Electricity will also come from photovoltaic cells
integrated into rooftops and a 20-megawatt wind farm. The city will get its water from a solar-powered desalination
plant.
Ferrari World Abu Dhabi: The world’s first Ferrari theme park and largest attraction of its kind. The park pays tribute to
the passion, excellence, performance and technical innovation that Ferrari has established over the years and represents
today. Step past the main gates into an intense multi-sensory experience celebrating all things Ferrari. Fans, families and
racing fanatics alike will experience the race, the culture, the indulgence and the history of Ferrari like no one has before.
