Teachers’ Rules and Regulations
Attendance
Teachers should be present at school not later than 07:20a.m.with a 10minutes grace
period. Teachers should sign the attendance book on their arrival in the morning and
before leaving in the afternoon. Teachers and students will not be allowed to leave the
school compound during working hours except with the permission of the Head of
School.
Morning Prayer and Assembly
Teachers should attend the Morning Prayer and should stand behind their respective
classes. After prayers, teachers should accompany their pupils to the classrooms.
Permission
Permission to leave school premises during working hours is granted by the Head of
School. Whenever permission is granted, an entry should be made in the Movement Book
provided.
Daily and weekly notes
Teachers should submit their daily and weekly notes to the HOD academics on their
arrival at the school in the morning on the first working day of every week.
Discipline in classrooms
No teachers is allowed to do private reading (newspapers, etc. or make phone calls) while
he is in charge of a class. No teacher is allowed to leave his class unattended without a
member of staff. Teachers should have full control over their pupils when they leave the
classrooms during short break, at lunch time and on leaving the classroom at the end of
the last period.
Extra curriculum activities
Extra curriculum activities form part of the scheme of duty. Teachers should therefore
collaborate with the Management whenever their services are required for such activities.
All staff must avail the school of skills/talent by being involved in all school
programmes.
Others
The attention of all teachers is also drawn to the contents of the general provisions of the
report below. The details of the duties and responsibilities of the teachers include the
following:


Having mastery of authorized subjects to be taught.
Teaching of the authorized subjects.










Preparation of lesson notes and schemes of work.
Setting adequate amount of homework and class work to pupils and checking of same.
Use of teaching aid reinforce teaching.
Proper running, control and management of the class.
Maintenance of discipline in classrooms or on premises of the school and on the
playground when the need arises.
Looking after the welfare of pupils, their general progress and recording their attendance.
Attending in-service courses, training courses and seminars relating to their work
whenever required and writing report of such trainings.
Setting tests and class examinations as required, supervising such tests and class
examinations and marking the scripts, preparing reports on pupils etc.
Any other duties or activities relevant to their positions as secondary school teachers.
All academic staff members are expected to be good role models at all times.
 Female teachers wear decent slip-on comfortable shoes in school. On no account shall
be found barefooted or wearing slippers within the school premises during school
hours. On no account must a teacher colour his/her hair outside black/brown.
 Teachers must have their classrooms neat and well decorated always. Decorations
must be changed based on the current themes to be taught in class. Teachers are
expected to change their classroom Pin-ups as often as needed.
 No teacher is permitted to eat or sleep while lessons are going on. Teachers should eat
during lunch break and also seize this opportunity to teach the pupils table manners
using herself/himself as a role model.
 No teacher is permitted to make or receive calls during classes, assembly or school
meetings. All mobile phones should be switched off or at least kept in the vibrate
mode during these periods.
 On no account shall a teacher teach without teaching aids and a well prepared lesson
note approved by the Head of School or AHOS. Lessons must be practical and
interesting, using the aids effectively.
 Teachers must respect the individuality of every child. Slow learners must be given
due attention while fast learners should be given more work to be done. Essentially,
all the pupils must be treated fairly and non-preferentially.
 Teachers ID must be worn at all times. Damaged or missing ID cards will be replaces
on the account of the staff concerned.
 English is the official language of the school and shall remain the medium of
communication within the school premises. However, French, Hausa and Igbo may
be spoken during language classes.
 Unofficial visitors will not be allowed into the school until after close of school –
3:00p.m.
 On no account shall a teacher teach without teaching aids and a well prepared lesson
note approved by the AHOS. Lessons must be practical and interesting, using the aids
effectively.
 No teacher is permitted to eat or sleep while lessons are going on. Teachers should eat
during lunch break and also cease this opportunity to teach the pupils table manners
using herself/himself as a role model.
 Every lesson must have adequate class activity/class work for effective teaching and
learning. These processes should be clearly stated in the lesson notes.
 Class teachers and their assistants are the custodians of all items in their classrooms.
They should report promptly any damage or missing items in their classroom to the
HOS or the AHOS. If this is not done they will be held liable.
 Any textbook or material borrowed from the library must be signed for and returned
as at when due.
 Any member of staff that is absent from school due to ill-health for more than one
day must send in a sick leave report from a medical doctor of a reputeable hospital.
Absence due to any other critical reason shall be considered as casual leave upon the
approval of the HOS prior to the date(s) of absence.
 Teachers must notify the HOS and relevant permit as well as fill the Movement Book
before leaving the school premises during work hours. Time of leaving, return and
reason for leaving must be specified in the Movement Book.
 Competence, skills and performance of staff shall evaluated on a termly basis in the
Official school appraisal form. It is importance to note that the number of queries
received and general performance during that will be put into consideration in
effecting and salary review.
Leave
The following types of leaves are available to the academic staff of Child of Promise
School:
a. Annual Leave
b. Casual Leave
c. Maternity Leave
d. Leave without pay
e. Study Leave
Annual Leave is a right as a member of staff of COP School, all other is a priviledge.
Typed or handwritten application for leave is to be submitted to the Head of School, for
onward passage to the school Board for Approval.
Paid annual leave shall be undertaken after the completion of the compulsory probation
period as contained in the letter of employment. So as not to jeopardize the smooth
running of the school, annual leave will have to be planned well in advance and thus may
involve priority listing. In all cases, however, annual leave will only be taken during the
school holidays as noted in the school calendar. Requests and evidence for personal leave
shall be submitted to the HOS prior to the date(s) of absence.
Casual leave may be granted for:
a. Illness in the immediate family.
b. Personal illness.
c. Death of a family member.
d. Personal or family social business such as weddings, burials etc.
e. Court appointments.
Upon returning to school after illness, a member of staff is required to present a doctor’s
report. A doctor’s report may be necessary for absence of more than two consecutive
working days.
Any teachers who is absent from school without permission for a week or more may be
dismissed.
Paid maternity leave of three months shall be granted to female members of staff after
one full year in the school employment.
Leave without pay may be granted at the discretion of the school Board.
Study leave may be considered as leave without pay and may attract no salaries during
the period.
Dismissal
The HOS, subject to the approval of the board, may terminate the services of any staff
who:

Fails to follow legitimate directive of the Board or Management.



Acts in an immoral/unacceptable way.
Is convicted of a felony.
This in any way, neglectful of his/her duties, dishonest, guilty of misconduct such
as stealing, forgery, corruption or in any way failing to maintain a standard
commensurate with goals of the school.
This school may also lay off an employee for reasons of retrenchment or financial
stringency. Should this be the case School will pay, one month salary to the affected staff.
Academic staff who wish to terminate their appointment must give at least 1 month’s
notice in writing to the HOS.
At least one month before the end of the third academic term of the year. Effort should
always be made to give at least three months notice, to give the school enough time to get
a good replacement.
The school may terminate the services of a member of staff on any one of the
following ground but not limited to the following grounds:









Insubordination/rudeness.
Perpectual lateness.
Habitual absenteeism.
Gross inefficiency on the job.
Assaulting or manhandling a fellow staff or pupil.
Presentation of fake/falsified documents.
Making false statements.
Disclosure of classified information or priviledged information, and
Abandonment of primary assignment to engage in personal business.
