Summer 2014
From the Director
Please join the Library
A s most of you know by now, I have announced my retireBoard and Staff in
ment. My official last day has not been determined but I am
wishing our Director planning to work through the end of the fiscal year, which is
June 30.
Robert “Bob” Lifka
Not coming from a library background (which was noted by a
the best on his
few at the time of my hiring), the learning curve was rather
retirement
steep but I think things turned out all right. For that, my

thanks go to the Library Trustees for supporting me and the
capable staff I was blessed to inherit for assisting me. I would
be remiss if I did not also thank my fellow library directors
from the surrounding area who did not let my lack of a library
degree prevent them from accepting me as their peer and
guided me as I learned the ropes.
Patrons, staff and trustees have come and gone since I began
in February 2001. Most left to do other things or go to other
places but we said our final goodbyes to a few in a church or a
chapel. They all have been missed.
Accomplishments during my tenure include passing a tax-rate
referendum in 2002 and finishing off the lower level in 2007
but I cannot take credit for either. Both were group efforts and
I was but one member of the team on each.
The relationships I’ve established in my time here give me the
most gratification. The most enjoyable part of my job is the
time spent on the Circulation Desk serving patrons, although
the clerks still follow behind me to make sure I’ve done things
correctly.
Working here also proved to me that public libraries are not
dinosaurs waiting for extinction, as some have said. When I
started, public libraries were embracing computers and broadening our offerings from books to movies. As I prepare to
leave, public libraries are embracing eBooks and are preparing
for downloadable music and movies.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the Library patrons
and Village residents for the support given the Library in general and me in particular during my 13-plus years as director.
It has been my pleasure to serve as director of your Library.

has received a $100,000.00 special appropriation
from the State of Illinois.
In addition, the Illinois State Library has announced
that the North Riverside Public Library will receive
$14,743.00 from two separate grants, $2,547.00

administered by the State Library.
The Library would like to thank Lenora Giurini,

donations in memory of Floyd L. Springer, which
allowed the purchase of The Architecture of Frank
Lloyd Wright: A Complete Catalogue, The Prairie School: Frank Lloyd Wright and His Contemporaries, Architecture: Form, Space and Order

use for a month. We want to show off your collection.
We would like to thank our recent Display Case
exhibitors – North Riverside Garden Club in March;
Jass Whirl in April; and Jim Zak in May.
“On behalf of the patrons of the North Riverside
Public Library, we express our sincere gratitude to
Representative Ford for this special appropriation,”
Library Board President Annette Corgiat said. “It is
gratifying for the State of Illinois to return some of
the hard-earned tax dollars our residents send to
Springfield.”

Library Receives Special
Appropriation
Library officials intend to use the unrestricted special appropriation to fund a series of small capital
projects that will improve the facility and several
equipment purchases that will benefit patrons.
Although the special appropriation was approved by
the General Assembly in May, the funds were not
received until recently.
First-time users will need to create a user name and
password to access the Zinio site. They will then
have access to full digital copies of the magazines
the Library selects from Zinio’s collection, available
via computer or mobile devices.

The March 8, 2014 Brushes and Bites event was a tremendous success. Who knew that there were so many
budding and undiscovered artists in the area? We began
with some light appetizers and beverages while participants were finding their seats and getting familiar with
the materials they would be using to create their own
work of art. Then our own Kathleen Spale and her colleague, Charlie De Leonardis began the instructions of
how to divide up your canvas and begin the creative
process.
Kathleen had prepared several versions of a scene of
nature from right in our community. These were for guidance and inspiration, and they truly inspired a great variety of paintings. She also recruited many fine volunteers
who brought paint and other supplies to the participants
as needed. Thank you volunteers!!

After a little more than an hour of newly learned technique and color applications, the artists took a break
to eat some delicious food prepared by Benny Ritacca,
known to local residents as the proprietor of the former
Rascal’s Restaurant. We thank Benny for making this a
truly memorable gastronomic event.
The participants went back to work putting finishing
touches on their paintings. Everyone had so much fun
that the recurring question was “when will we do this
again.” The Library Foundation is working on preparing
another such event as soon as we can regroup and organize it.
Please watch the Library Newsletter, postings in the
library, and news in various community publications and
websites for a future date and time. Right now we are
recovering from this event, which brought needed funds
to the Foundation. Do we have your e-mail address so
that we can contact you directly about our events? If not,
please leave a note for us at the circulation desk with
your e-mail.
In the Library Director’s news you will find information
on one of the latest investments the Foundation has
made in technology that you can use, bringing electronic
magazine subscriptions to North Riverside. Our fundraisers make such support possible.
