A church tour is offered each Sunday after Worship. Meet in the first balcony to learn more about Riverside’s
unique history, programs, and landmark Gothic building. There is no charge. Tours also take place on Wednesdays,
Thursdays, and Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. No reservations are necessary. For special tours by appointment,
call 212.870.6792. There is a small fee for these tours.
If your car is parked in the garage below the building, present this bulletin to the attendant before
6:00 p.m. and your parking spot will cost you only $4.00. On Wednesday evenings, have your parking ticket
stamped after service and receive the same discount.

Mr. John Hardee is the eldest son of Mr. Sidney Hardee and Mrs. Toni Gunthrope Hardee. He is in the ninth grade
and attends All Hallows High School. John enjoys being a big brother to his little brother Matthew Hardee. His
favorite sport is basketball.
Mrs. Snow Wilson is a Sunday Church School Teacher for the first and grade grade classes. She has been an active
member in the Youth Ministry Programs across the years and she volunteers as the Musical Director of our CYF
Afternoon at the Orchestra Program. She is the wife of Dr. James D. Wilson and the proud mother of her only child,
Chloe Wilson.
Mr. Daviid Maxwell is in the ninth grade. He enjoys all sports, but his favorite is soccer. He is the youngest son of
Mr. Keith and Mrs. Cindi Maxwell. Daviid has been a very active member in every aspect of Youth Ministry since his
family relocated to New York City three years ago.
Mr. Emery A. Smith is in the seventh grade at Mott Hall II. Emery enjoys playing sports and is very athletic. He is
an excellent chess player as well as a talented artist. He enjoys being a big brother to his little sister, Reni. Emery is the
son of Dr. Hawthorne Smith and Dr. Yinka Akinsulure-Smith.
Ms. Chloe Wilson is a Senior at LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts, where she is a voice major. Chloe enjoys
singing, playing music, and running cross country, as well as keeping up with current events. She is the only daughter
of Dr. James D. Wilson and Mrs. Snow Wilson.
Ms. Jessica Nelson is the daughter of Dr. Frank Nelson and Ms. Lisa Nelson. She is a Senior at Rye High School,
and is a member of the cheerleading team. Jessica is also a proud member of and student leader in the Linking Handle
Bars Program at Rye.
Mr. Steven Jacobs is the son of Mrs. Stefany B. Jacobs. Steven is a Junior at LaGuardia High School of Performing
Arts, where he is a voice major. He enjoys singing and learning other languages, and is a competitive basketball player.
Mr. Gabriel Stone is a Senior at the Long Island Lutheran High School. He enjoys playing sports and is a member of
the Long Island Lutheran Crusaders Football team. He is the son of Mr. Richard Stone and Mrs. Karen McVoy. Gabe
was baptized at The Riverside Church 17 years ago.
Mr. Gary Cooper, Esq., is a first year Sunday Church School Teacher. We are blessed to have him serving in Youth
Ministry. Gary is a member of The Riverside Church and is the proud father of three children, two sons and one
daughter. He formerly served as the Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York.
Ms. Nicole Mora is the daughter of Mr. Fausto Mora and Mrs. Katharine Mora. She is a recent graduate. Nicole has
a strong interest in social justice activism. She also enjoys serving as a volunteer for the Riverside Rising Voices Choir
and lending her creative assistance to help with the annual Christmas Pageant.
Flowers on the Chancel are given by Ms. Irene Ryan King, in honor of Christopher Johnson and The Riverside Choir.
The Riverside Deaf Ministry provides sign-language interpretation at the first Sunday service of each month and
every Wednesday at our Space for Grace service, as well as at significant special services throughout the year.

Today at The Riverside Church in the City of New York, we join in the National Observance of Children’s Sabbath,
an annual event sponsored by the Children’s Defense Fund. We come together to celebrate, to cherish, and to honor
our children. The aim of Children’s Sabbath is to unite communities of faith regardless of their denominational
affiliation in a call to action on behalf of children. We come together to rededicate ourselves to the children of The
Riverside Church and to children around the world. As a community, we open our hearts to love them and our
arms to embrace them. Today in Worship we recognize their talents, their gifts, and their contributions to the life
and community of our church.
We are blessed with the opportunity to provide a spiritual foundation for our children as a Christian community of
faith. We are reminded of our shared responsibility as parents, caregivers, mentors, and teachers. Regardless of the
role we play in their lives, whether it is a leading or supporting role, we have an awesome task to remain committed
and dedicated to every child, and to improve their lives and pursue justice on their behalf. Our prayer is that God
will provide for us an endless supply of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
and generosity that we can turn toward each other and especially toward our children and youth.
Thank you to our children and youth for leading our worship service today. With God’s help, we will love you
unconditionally, while listening to you and opening our hearts, minds, and arms to welcome you fully into the life
of our community. You are precious in God’s sight and we will cherish and protect you today and forever.

Perhaps no other book of the Bible depicts the "inner life" of God so dramatically and with such tension as
the words of the prophet Jeremiah. His ministry spans the period from 625 BCE to sometime after the fall of
Jerusalem in 587 BCE. The prophetic voice of Jeremiah was an inspiration to Riverside’s first called minister,
The Rev. Harry Emerson Fosdick. And, as a result, when Riverside was built, Fosdick asked that the prophet’s
story be incorporated into the design of the Nave.

Movies @ Riverside: La Bestia, Multi-purpose Room
The documentary La Bestia examines the plight of Central American migrants during their dangerous
journey across Mexico to the United States. According to filmmaker Pedro Ultreras, the film looks at the
suffering of migrants who are seeking the American dream and tells the story of those who try to cross
Mexico on the train known as "La Bestia." Also known as the "Tren de la Muerte" (the Train of Death)
among migrants, it provides the most viable way of crossing a country dotted with immigration service
stations. A discussion will follow the film. Light refreshments will be available.

Ordination at Riverside
The local church is the primary place where persons are nurtured in the Christian faith, hear the call to
discipleship, and respond with a decision to seek a specific form of ministry, of which ordained ministry is only
one. Lay leaders, clergy, and staff encourage inquirers to consider ordained ministry, but they also encourage
inquirers to ask: is ordination necessary to respond faithfully to my vocational call?
This discernment process is deliberative, and at Riverside it is the responsibility of the Ordination Committee.
Through a Practicum under the guidance of skilled mentors, the Committee prepares individuals for ordained
ministry in the American Baptist Churches and the United Church of Christ.
The basic requirements for coming into care are:
• Membership in good standing at Riverside for at least a year;
• Residency within easy commuting distance of Riverside; and
• Clarity about service in the institutional church of Jesus Christ.

Bring Your Food Pantry Donations to Worship on Sundays and Wednesdays
One in five New Yorkers lives in a home that is food-insecure. Over the last few years, a number of pantries
have been forced to close their doors, and while we have managed to serve the increased number of guests
visiting our pantry, the strain has been tremendous. Food collections are taken every Sunday at Worship, and
Wednesday at Space for Grace. Please bring food items and cash donations to support the Food Pantry.
Maranatha: Riversiders for LGBT Concerns
Maranatha is committed to serving God by fostering greater understanding while promoting equity for LGBT
people. We welcome all to participate in this ministry.

Annual Thanksgiving Brunch: Thursday, November 27
As is our tradition, we will again hold a Thanksgiving morning service at 10:30 a.m., followed by Thanksgiving
Brunch at 12:00 p.m. in South Hall. Tickets may be purchased at the Visitors Center Gift Shop and on
Sundays during Fellowship Hour in the Cloister Lobby. Meal prices are: Adults $20, Senior Adults (age 62 and
older) $12, and Children (under age 12) $10. Tickets will not be sold on Thanksgiving Day.
Seating is limited. If you cannot attend, please consider making a donation to feed someone in need. For more

The English Conversation Partners Program invites you to stop by its table during Fellowship Hour after Sunday
service to learn how to become a Volunteer Tutor. Tutors meet with adult Conversation Partners once a week.
International students, for whom English is a second language, and English speaking tutors are welcome to
participate in the program.

About Today’s Guest Preacher
Marian Wright Edelmen, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF), has been an advocate for
disadvantaged Americans for her entire professional life. Under her leadership, CDF has become the nation’s strongest
voice for children and families. The Children's Defense Fund’s Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child
a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with
the help of caring families and communities.
Mrs. Edelman, a graduate of Spelman College and Yale Law School, began her career in the mid-60s when, as the first
black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar, she directed the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund office in
Jackson, Mississippi. In l968, she moved to Washington, D.C., as counsel for the Poor People's Campaign that Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. began organizing before his death. She founded the Washington Research Project, a public interest law
firm and the parent body of the Children's Defense Fund. For two years she served as the Director of the Center for Law
and Education at Harvard University and in l973 began CDF.
Mrs. Edelman served on the Board of Trustees of Spelman College which she chaired from 1976 to 1987 and was the first
woman elected by alumni as a member of the Yale University Corporation on which she served from 1971 to 1977. She has
received over a hundred honorary degrees and many awards including the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Prize, the Heinz
Award, and a MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship. In 2000, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s
highest civilian award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award for her writings which include: Families in
Peril: An Agenda for Social Change; The Measure of Our Success: A Letter to My Children and Yours; Guide My Feet: Meditations
and Prayers on Loving and Working for Children; Stand for Children; Lanterns: A Memoir of Mentors; Hold My Hand: Prayers for
Building a Movement to Leave No Child Behind; I'm Your Child, God: Prayers for Our Children; I Can Make a Difference: A Treasury
to Inspire Our Children; and The Sea Is So Wide and My Boat Is So Small: Charting a Course for the Next Generation.
She is a board member of the Robin Hood Foundation and the Association to Benefit Children, and is a member of the
Council on Foreign Relations, the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the
Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
Marian Wright Edelman is married to Peter Edelman, a Professor at Georgetown Law School. They have three sons and
four grandchildren.
