We all had a great time getting together with friends, co-workers or family members showing off our golfing skills or in some cases just trying to get the ball off the ground. I was a member of the Pink Ladies and you can see by the picture we had lots of fun. We raised $7,000.00 that will go to support the Alzheimer’s Society of Guelph-Wellington. Father’s Day is fast approaching and this year we would like to invite all of our “Dad’s” and their guests to a B.B.Q. and beer tasting. Beer is being provided by Wellington Brewery and tickets can be purchased at the Village office. Riverside is sponsoring the Rotary Health Fair for Senior’s, Caregivers and Families. This event will be taking place at the Village on June 19th from 10am to 2pm. This is a community wide event with three guest speakers and information display booths. Please spread the word and I hope to see you all there. The Pioneer Network hosts a conference each year which focuses on Culture Change and Resident Centred Care. We would like to congratulate Yvonne Singleton who was chosen by our Village Advisory Team to attend this year’s conference in Bellevue, Washington. We would like to thank everyone who showed interest in this wonderful opportunity. For June, let me share some about Fathers. These are shared with permission. “Only God can make a Dad. He does it each and every time He puts into the heart of a father a special warmth and gentleness. Only God can make a Dad who shares his children’s laughter, dries their tears, and always keeps on loving.” “Mender of toys, leader of boys; changer of fuses, kisser of bruises; Mover of couches, soother of ouches; Pounder of nails, teller of tales; Hanger of screens, guide for our teens; Fixer of bikes, chastiser of tykes; Raker of leaves, cleaner of eves; Dryer of dishes, fulfiller of wishes O, bless him, dear Lord.” (Jo Ann Heidbrreded) Did you know that most collect calls are on Father’s Day? At bedtime, a devoted father often prayed with his small children and sometimes sang them to sleep—until he overheard the five-year-old boy tell his three-year-old sister, “If you pretend you’re asleep, he stops.” A blessed Father’s Day to all the fathers and grandfathers and may each of us know the love and protection of our Heavenly Father. Music by Timothy Clark 6 Riverside Review, Vol. 15, Issue 6 June 2013 Keep Fit with your Kinesiologists HOW DOES EXERCISE IMPROVE MY BRAIN’S FUNCTION? It is well known that physical activity benefits the body. Exercise strengthens the heart, bones and muscles. It has the ability to decrease symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, obesity and many more chronic illnesses. Plus, unlike pharmaceutical interventions, aerobic exercise does not produce any negative side effects. Now, we have also learned that aerobic fitness can improve how the brain works. The brain typically shrinks in late adulthood, and this shrinkage is believed to play a role in age-related memory decline. The brain maintains its ability to make new connections even late in life. Improvement in brain function can be observed after 30min of aerobic exercise 3x a week for 6 months. Individuals who stay active into their golden oldies tend to have larger brains. Aerobic exercises include activities such as biking, walking and swimming. Walking is often the easiest form of aerobic exercise to access because all you need is yourself and some shoes. Whatever you choose make sure you enjoy it or you are unlikely to keep it up and will miss out on the numerous benefits of aerobic exercise. Regular aerobic exercise can help you achieve the following: increase brain size Increase blood circulation and nutrient delivery to the brain improve planning, scheduling and multitasking skills increase attention and concentration reduce risk of cognitive decline/ dementia Starting June 3rd 2013 there will be a “Bigger Brighter Brain NuStep Challenge” where we encourage all residents to get exercising and improve their brain health. Please talk to your Kinesiologist to learn about the details of the challenge and how you can get a bigger, brighter brain! It is never too late to gain the benefits of exercise! Riverside is pleased to welcome the following volunteers to the village: Arjit Kang Candy King Natasha Millar Henry Truong Ivy Tang Steven Lam April, Samantha and Benjamin Dickin The Village of Riverside Glen is thrilled to highlight the Dickin Family as Volunteers of the Month! Since November of 2012, April Dickin and her children Samantha (age 2) and Benjamin (7 months) share their Monday morning with the residents living on our Memory Care Neighbourhood. Each week, they choose a cookie recipe, gather ingredients, bake and enjoy the sweets of their labour with the residents. This volunteer experience brings happiness to the residents as well as to this family as they spend time on the neighbourhood. Residents can assist with baking, visit and interact with a young, incredibly smiley baby, a youthful, sweet and very smart toddler and an incredible Mom who is a true role model for her children. VOLUNTEER VIEW Volunteer of the Month— “Volunteering at Riverside Glen has worked so well with our family. As a parent I appreciate that this placement allows us the flexibility to accommodate the needs of a toddler and infant in a natural homelike atmosphere. My children enjoy the warm smiling faces from both residents and staff as we prepare delicious baked goods to enjoy together. Samantha looks forward to our weekly visits and the community members we have built relationships with. It is so rewarding to know that the people we share our time with genuinely appreciate our efforts." ~April Dickin INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING? The program utilizes an interprofessional approach for early diagnosis and treatment of memory loss (Memory Clinic). It also offers weekly sessions to develop specific evidence-based memory strategies and skills (Memory & Aging Program). The Memory Clinic will begin this month at the Village of Winston Park, and will be open to residents and community members with a physician referral. The clinic’s interprofessional approach was developed by Dr. Linda Lee (Director of RIA’s Primary Healthcare Education program—learn more about Linda on the next page) and has received international acclaim for its innovativeness and proven impact. “Unlike most Memory Clinics that are dependent on a limited number of specialists, this clinic builds capacity within family practice with an interprofessional team that includes a family physician, social worker, nurse, and pharmacist, with integrated specialist support”, explained Dr. Linda Lee. “This means that many more people can be diagnosed earlier and supports can be put in place, with the aim of improving quality of life, reducing caregiver burnout, and reducing health care costs.” For more information about the Memory Clinic, please contact Charlene Rivais at 519-576-2430 or [email protected]. The Memory & Aging Program was developed at Baycrest by Dr. Angela Troyer (Program Director of Neuropsychology and Cognitive Health, and Professional Practice Chief of Psychology), in collaboration with a team of psychologists and scientists. Baycrest is a global leader in developing and providing innovations in aging and brain Continued on next page... This 10-hour program, delivered in weekly sessions, will help older adults to: Understand what memory is, how it changes with age, and factors that can impact memory for the better or for worse. Identify and implement lifestyle changes to improve memory. Learn and practice memory strategies to improve the ability to remember everyday things such as names, locations of items, and tasks. Build confidence in your own memory ability. The program is being led by Mike Sharratt (President of RIA) and Shahnaz Koji (Psychology graduate from University of Waterloo), who have both completed the instructor training course at Baycrest. The complete series of sessions is being offered on a rotating basis at the Villages of Winston Park (Kitchener), Riverside Glen (Guelph), Humber Heights (Etobicoke) and Taunton Mills (Whitby). There is a fee of $120.00 for the 10 weekly sessions, which includes a program workbook. To learn about the schedule for upcoming sessions of the Memory & Aging Program, please contact Shahnaz Koji at [email protected] or 519-404-6896. In collaboration with the Ontario College of Family Physicians, Linda has developed a Memory Clinic Training Program which has assisted other Ontario Family Health Teams and Community Health Centers to develop their own primary care Memory Clinics. The Regional Geriatric Program of Hamilton Health Sciences awarded Linda the 2009 Individual Achievement Service Award for Geriatric Excellence in recognition of her work.
