A Joyful Noise May 2015 ‘Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.’ Total Common Ministry at Work Lorne Render, Senior Warden Christ Episcopal Church 1216 Seventh Street Anacortes WA 98221 360-293-5790 [email protected] www.christchurchanacortes.org Office Hours: Monday-Thursday 10:00 am-12:00 1:00-4:00 pm Sunday Services 8:00 AM 2nd Sunday: Eucharist Worship Service Other Sundays: Morning Prayer Service 9:30 AM Chandler’s Square Community 2nd Sunday: Communion Service Other Sundays: Morning Prayer Service As I sit down to write a few words for the Joyful oise, somewhat early this month, I wonder, to be frank, what I will say. The sun is streaming into the house, warming both the house and me, the blue sky is rich and infinite, and after a morning walk with the dog and seeing mountains and water, one has to be grateful. Last evening we had our monthly Bishop’s Committee meeting and, as has become the custom, there were thoughtful discussions and decisions, and good fellowship. Also as usual, reports were given which made me think of a typical, if that is possible, week in the life of our church. This week there have been meetings/gatherings of the Worship Team, the Ministry Support Circle, the Pastoral Care Committee, The Red Door Management Team, the Women’s Group, the Men’s Group, and EfM. A group talking about a new initiative to invite families with youngsters to our church met. Choir practice was held, young people from Christ Church, Celebration, and St. Paul’s Church attended GIG, linens for The Red Door Thrift Shop were folded in the Parish Hall, and the Sunday bulletins were put together for both Christ Church and Celebration Lutheran. Volunteers worked six days during the week at The Red Door. The lawn was mowed. The Altar Guild made preparations for Sunday, services were organized, a Faith Formation program offered, and a coffee hour planned. And, as a community, we came together to worship. All of this and more are expressions of Total Common Ministry here at Christ Church. 10:30 AM Eucharist Worship Service Farewell Reception Weekday Services for Bishop Sandy & Mari Hampton 1st & 3rd Thursdays 3:45-4:15 pm Centering Prayer Please join in wishing them well. 2nd, 4th, & 5th Wednesdays 6:00-6:30 pm Evening Prayer Wednesday, May 20 5:00-7:00 pm Parish Hall Gathering Room Christ Church Clergy & Ministry Support Circle Adult Faith Formation Interfaith Cooperation The Reverend Diane Ramerman Priest 360-202-7397 [email protected] The Reverend Carol Rodin Priest 360-941-3076 [email protected] The Reverend Eric Johnson Deacon 360-840-5415 [email protected] Betty Anne McCoy Leadership & Support 360-391-2674 [email protected] Dale Ramerman Leadership & Support Sexton 360-202-9748 [email protected] Sunday Mornings through May 17 9:00 am Breakfast 9:15 am Program Parish Hall Gathering Room Eboo Patel, author of Embracing Interfaith Cooperation, believes religion is a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier of division. Sanford Hampton 360-588-1092 [email protected] You are invited to have your yard and garden blessed in observance of Rogation Day and to join us as we walk the neighborhood, blessing the gardens of neighbors and congregants. Rogation Day has been observed since ancient times to honor God for his creation and to pray for the land and sea, the gifts of labor, and for the needs of all. Senior Warden We will begin at Christ Church by blessing seeds and transplants and soil from our yards and gardens. From Christ Church, those who are able will join the procession to the neighborhood gardens (F Avenue to N Avenue and Fourth Street to Tenth Street), where we will ask God’s blessing on the soil in gardens and yards and the plants grown there. A certificate with a Rogation Day Blessing, which can be posted in the garden, will be presented at each garden blessed. Our goals are to establish a connection with this Episcopal congregation, to pray for them as we learn their story, and to make their Christian story visible in our congregation. Christians are a declining minority of the population in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories of Gaza and the West Bank (less than 5% are Christian Arabs). The Diocese of Olympia Emmanuel Church, Ramleh Israel and the Diocese of Jerusalem committed to a companion relationship about fifteen years ago; since that time, several congregations in the Diocese of Olympia have stepped up to companion individual churches. Emmanuel of Ramleh has not had a companion church; we at Christ Church will be establishing a relationship new to them as well as us. Ramleh is an industrial city, with a population of over 64,000 according to available census figures. Of that number, 80% are Jewish, 16% Muslim, and 4% Christian. Like other Christian churches in Israel/Palestine, the Church of Emmanuel works to bridge the relationships of the three faiths. Their ecumenical programs are focused primarily on youth and women. The priest, the Rev. Samuel Fanous, received his formal theological education at the University of Virginia. There are many ways we can establish relationship: e-mail, facebook, adult pen pals one to one; skype phone calls. As we connect, we will be sending photos of our congregation, and hope they will do the same. There is no financial commitment, this is a ministry of presence. The Diocesan Committee for Palestine/Israel encourages us to set goals, much as we have a mutual ministry plan for Christ Church. What can we accomplish in five years of companioning Emmanuel Church, Ramleh? If you are interested in this new ministry, please contact me. Dale and I will be hosting a supper at our home in May: we will view the DVD Steadfast Hope together and discuss possibilities for this companion ministry. Growing In Grace Faith formation for KK-12 Parish Hall Gathering Room Bring a friend. All are welcome. Weekly on Thursdays 6:00-7:30 pm, beginning with dinner Notes from the Bishop’s Committee Meeting 13 April 2015 Lorne Render, Senior Warden In each Joyful oise newsletter, I’ll be sharing information from the monthly Bishop’s Committee meeting with you. The full Minutes of the meetings are posted in the Parish Hall, along with any written reports that provide more information. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any member of the Bishop’s Committee. –Lorne The Red Door Thrift Shop Report Due to the shortage of volunteers, the Red Door Management Team is considering a couple of options: longer volunteer time slots, i.e. three-hour time slots rather than two-hour time slots, and closing the shop one more day a week. Various means to recruit volunteers are underway. The annual tea for Red Door volunteers and employees will be held on Wednesday, May 27, at 3:00 pm. developing a companion relationship with Emmanuel Church in Ramleh, Israel. This will be initiated by Diane+ and Carol+ writing to the priest at Emmanuel Church. Financial Report The financial statements were presented, reviewed, and accepted. March was a good month financially. First quarter Income/Expense is positive. Ministry Support Circle Report Diane+ noted that the Circle received an email from congregant Diane Canington suggesting that Christ Church voice their support of Christians who are suffering or being persecuted in the Near East and Africa. It was decided that Diane+ will pass the letter along to Betty Anne McCoy who could seek guidance on how to proceed from the Diocesan Council. Clergy Report A thank you was extended to the Altar Guild and to scheduler Judith Render for their work during Holy Week, and to June Cook for her beautiful display of Stations of the Cross. It was noted that many Navy families will be moving into the area and we will be working with St. Stephens Church, Oak Harbor, to make contact with new families. In order to provide childcare for families with children, the Bishop’s Committee approved allocating funds for 2015 to hire two individuals during our 10:30 service. Deacon Eric Johnson has been invited to serve as the moderator for the Day of Prayer in Anacortes. The Bishop’s Committee approved moving forward with Senior Warden Report A farewell reception for Bishop Sandy & Mari Hampton will be held Wednesday, May 20, 5:00-7:00 pm, in the Parish Hall. ew Business There was discussion about adding to the Ministry Support Circle, an idea that was widely discussed at the March congregational conversation. Following discussion, a motion was made to begin the process of adding new members to the Ministry Support Circle. A process was discussed and information is to be shared with the congregation within the next few weeks.
