giving my niece her very first pedicure. Painting

Heart Health Awareness
Spring offers us so many opportunities to get outside
and be active. While enjoying activities like a round of
golf, Thomas H. Cawthon, MD, Interventional
Cardiologist at Princeton Baptist Medical Center recommends we practice self-awareness, particularly as it
relates to our heart health.
• Risk factors for heart attack include smoking
(including smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes),
diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and a
family history
• Signs and symptoms of heart attack include pain
or pressure and sometimes a burning sensation in
the chest or jaw that may radiate to the left arm with associated sweatiness,
shortness of breath and sometimes nausea. Women often have atypical symp
toms such as suddenly becoming profoundly weak or short of breath.
• Add an aspirin to your golf or athletic bag. One chewed right away when
symptoms occur can stop a heart attack.
• If you or a friend experience signs and symptoms of a heart attack, seek
immediate medical help. Many athletic facilities, including golf courses, have
an automated external defibrillator (AED) on site.

Absolutes & Variables
When your first child is born, for the most
part you have no idea what you are doing.
You can read all the books on child development you want to, but until you are actually
in the middle of this thing parenting, you
really are in the dark about most things.
Remember this truth: as you raise your children, there are the “absolutes” that must be taught (table manners, having class, being
responsible, being respectful to others and yourself, dressing appropriately, etc.), and
then there are what I like to call “variables.”

How do You
Deal with Adversity?
Steven Fox's breaking putt trickled down a slippery slope on the 37th hole of the
2012 U.S. Amateur championship and dropped into the cup, capping an amazing and improbable - three weeks of golf. Fox, a University of Tennessee-Chattanooga
student at the time, just made it through the qualifier before heading to Cherry
Hills (Colorado) Country Club. He opened with a marginal two-round performance that sent him to a 17-man playoff to make it through to the next round where
he secured the No. 63 seed. He began working his way through match play, beating
some of the top amateur players in the world to eventually win on the extra hole.
He became the lowest-seeded player to ever win the U.S. Amateur since the USGA
began seeding stroke-play qualifying in 1985.
His goal was just to make it to match play but he persevered and made history.
I love the definition of persevere: “Continued effort to do or achieve something
despite difficulties, failure or opposition." Fox kept pressing forward to the final
goal. What a long shot, but he did it! What about you? Are you content to just play
out the holes of your life because you have setbacks? True, adversity can be a
momentum killer. Fear sets in and you become reluctant to be courageous and take
risks. The easiest thing to do is to do nothing, so you become passive. Perseverance,
however, is the opposite of passivity. It is active. It means even if you have no paddle
you are fighting for all your worth to get upstream.
In Matthew 24 Jesus is teaching the disciples about the adversity of the last days and
He tells them, "But the one who endures to the end will be saved" (v. 13). It is obvious that the expectation of God for His children is that they persevere. In fact, the
books of Romans, Corinthians, Philippians, Hebrews, James and 1 Peter all make
clear that: A) If you are in Christ you will face adversity, and B) persevering through
adversity is actually a reassurance that you are a child of God.
Don't let adversity be the sand bunker in your life that causes you to back away
from the love of Christ. Embrace it, and experience that love in a profound and real
way. It will carry you through the adversity and to the end.

Not every child is alike. If you have more than one child, you are probably giving me an “Amen!” just about now. In almost every interview I have heard my son Brodie give,
he talks about hearing the phrase, “We love you both the same, but we're going to treat you differently,” over and over. He often wondered why I was so hard on him in certain areas and why I wasn't as hard on his sister, Reagan. But there were also areas that were ironclad in Reagan’s life that we we weren’t quite so tough on with Brodie.
Each of our children have specific gifts and areas of strength, but they also have areas of weakness. As a parent, we need to recognize those. Nobody has a perfect child. Let
me challenge you to sit down with your mate and look at each one of your children as an individual. Examine the areas they need help in developing. Some will be obvious
– but it will sometimes be a balancing act. Ask the Lord for wisdom and make a conscious effort to enable your child to be the very best they possibly can be and become
what God designed them to be. Find what each of your children is passionate about, and support them when appropriate. Most importantly, remember as a parent your job
description is preparing your child not only for this life on earth but also for eternity with the Lord. You don't want to look back on your time with your children and with
deep regret say, “if only." Think about it!

Motherhood in the Trenches: The Power of Prayer
Talk with any mom and you will hear a tension. It is not a bad tension or a
destructive tension, but it is a real tension. At one end is the experience of
watching a child grow and develop. It is exciting to see a son or daughter
accomplish new things as they mature. At the other end is the daily routine of
changing diapers, making meals, cleaning up messes, and dealing with bad attitudes. Moms may describe these experiences as overwhelming at times or even
boring and mundane at times. When motherhood is good it is great, and when
it is difficult it can cause a woman to despair. So how can mothers keep this tension in check and balanced?
It helps if we can see motherhood from God’s perspective. God honors the life
and work of a mother. It is part of His plan to redeem the world after the Fall.
In Genesis 3, in the midst of describing the hard consequences of sin, He
promises that the offspring of the woman would eventually crush evil in the
world. This promise would ultimately be fulfilled by Jesus Christ. But as children are born and raised to love, honor, and obey God the work of
redemption continues. Someone may read this and say, “The responsibility to
raise my child to love God makes being a mom even more daunting and overwhelming. What happens if my child makes different choices, does that make
me a bad mother?” The answer to this is found in God’s grace. A mother is
called to love her children, teach them what it means to follow Christ and
model that life for them. All the while, she leans on God’s grace to sustain her.
The work of forming a heart for God is the work of God’s Spirit, and He does
this through the faithful mother.

difficult days is prayer. Pray for yourself, that
you will know God more deeply through your
work as a mother. Pray for your children, that
they will be drawn close to God by the
work of His Spirit.

Tom Lehman’s
Search for Eternal Significance
The winner of the 2011 and
2012 Regions Tradition and
the 1996 Professional Golf
Association (PGA) Player of the
Year, Tom Lehman says that
whether he is traveling for tournaments
or drawing up plans for a new golf course,
he always stops to revel in God’s handiwork
outdoors. “I see God completely in nature.
Nature just drives me almost to my knees at
times because I see the beauty in it and I understand the majesty and the power of God,” he
says. As he preps to return to Birmingham for
the next Regions Tradition May 13-17 at Shoal
Creek, he reflects on how faith has shaped his
love for life and for the sport.
While Lehman previously believed in God and Jesus Christ, it was joining older
teammates at the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes gatherings that led
him to a true understanding of his value in God’s eyes. “They started talking
about this relationship you can have with Jesus Christ and His unconditional
love for us and how we are eternally significant. All the things that I was searching for were answered through that. That’s kind of where my journey started.“
Mentored by his huddle leader, who was also his head football coach, Lehman
says the ministry dramatically changed his understanding of God’s character.
“[Before] my perception of God was that God was a distant God, a cold God,
who just sat back looking to judge people and to punish you if you stepped out
of line. Not a personal God, not an overly loving God.
“That’s how it really changed was this idea that if He loved me so much that He
sent His son to die on the cross for me, He must not be this cruel, distant, noncaring, non-loving God. He must be just the opposite. Because of what Jesus did,
my whole perception of the Father changed as well.”

Lehman’s search for eternal significance began as a high
school sophomore in Alexandria, Minn., where as a
third string quarterback he felt left out of the acclaim
of a state championship victory. As he joined the team to
celebrate with the rest of the small town—riding on fire
trucks to a citywide pep rally—he felt discouraged that he
hadn’t played a single down all year. He had not helped the
team win the big game, and he felt like he didn’t belong.
“Being a part of that team but not feeling like I contributed made me feel pretty insignificant,
expendable. So that was really a driving force toward
kind of wondering there’s got to be more to life than this.
If you’re not one of the stars, you have to have significance somehow, someway,” he says. “So I started
looking for that.”
While it was football that jump-started
his faith, Lehman says golf was his best
sport in his youth. Recruited to play at
the University of Minnesota, Lehman
was an All-American
golfer for three years.
But his first attempts as
a professional were lessons in humility. He
traveled across the country to tournaments with
fellow player David
Olgren but lost his PGA tour card in 1983,
1984 and 1985.

Lehman left the PGA Tour to work as a club pro at Wood Ranch Golf Club in
California, married wife Melissa in 1987 and spent six seasons playing tournaments in Asia and South Africa and on the second tier Ben Hogan Tour in the
United States. He says he slowly realized that if he focused on improving his game
instead of on winning tournament earnings, he could be successful. He returned
to The Nationwide Tour in 1991, where he won three times and was the leading
money winner and Player of the Year. He rejoined the PGA Tour in 1992.
“Golf is so much between the ears so it’s not so much that your game physically
improves as your perspective on it—the way you approach it—changes. If you
believe you have the ability to be successful, then you make it your purpose to get
as good as you can get and not worry about the results, it becomes a lot easier….
You don’t have to force success; success just kind of happens.”

Now a resident of Scottsville, Ariz., Lehman and wife Melissa are parents to four children ages 12 to 24. And as a family, they make charity a priority. The Lehmans are
long-time supporters of the Phoenix Rescue Mission and assisted with the development of The Changing Lives Center for Women and Children, which provides
emergency medical care, counseling and protective shelter for women escaping
domestic violence, battling addition or enduring other traumatic events that have led
to homelessness.
Lehman also spends much of his free time with the civic organization Elevate
Phoenix, a 365-day-a-year mentoring program for inner city youth. Serving on the
Board of Directors, he says that while Elevate Phoenix is not a residential program,
much of his inspiration for growing an effective youth program has come from John
Croyle of North Alabama’s Big Oak Ranch. “The reason it’s successful is because
there’s full time staff that become the mentors—men and women who are available
24/7 every day, and so it’s a relationship where the kids are surrounded all the time
by people pouring into their lives with similar values and a consistent message, consistent love, consistent unconditional acceptance,” he says. “It really has created
significant change in the perspective of the kids from inner city schools and the way
they approach life, the way they approach school, the way they approach their future
and the way they approach their own personal life.”
Croyle echoes the program’s impact and praises Lehman’s love for children. “Tom
Lehman has been a positive Christian light in the pro golf world, and he has been a
great friend helping the Ranch for well over a decade. But he won me over when I
saw him meet our children who call Big Oak home and treated them with deep
respect,” he says. “He doesn't look at them in pity, but with a very compassionate
heart that they can spot a mile away. We are blessed to call him a friend to not only
us, but also our children!”
Growing in Faith through self-Forgiveness
As a professional golfer, Lehman says his greatest faith mentor has been Larry
Moody—President of Search Ministries and the chaplain and Bible study leader for
the PGA Tour since 1981. And as he has grown as a Christian, an athlete, and a philanthropist, learning to forgive himself for his own shortcomings is where he has
found true maturity in Christ. “For me, the process I went through was the inability
to let go of the things that I would do that I thought were discouraging.” Lehman
shares the message that no one has to be a star player or without faults to be loved by
God. “… if God loved me enough to send His Son to forgive me, then why do I not
forgive myself? To me, my whole Christian walk really can be summed up in those
key moments in my life when I understood God’s forgiveness and then I understood
that because of that, I should be able to forgive myself and not punish myself for
where I fall short.”

Financially Literate?
How bad is financial illiteracy today? So bad that your children may be
at risk of making some serious financial mistakes. Some are finding that
talking to children about finances has become less about the nuts and
bolts of money and more about putting money’s importance to our
daily lives in the correct context.
Women at particular risk. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL)
reports that only 45% of working women ages 21-64 have a retirement
plan. The DOL also notes that more women work in part-time jobs,
and are more likely to interrupt their careers to take care of family, whether that
be raising children or looking after parents. Some of these patterns are just luck
of the draw, but others may come from what and how parents teach children
about money.
Start young. New York Times money columnist Ron Lieber’s book The Opposite
of Spoiled discusses ways to prepare children for dealing with financial issues.
The title refers to the author’s search for an antonym to the word “spoiled” in
the context of an entitled and demanding personality. Lieber suggests focusing
on values like graciousness in communication, which can lead to more openness
in discussing money. Money can be frightening or mysterious to many, even
well into adulthood, and Lieber encourages approaching the topic with fewer
facts and figures and more as an emotional issue. The reasoning for this is that
money is, for children and adults, an emotional topic.
It Takes Vision to Prosper
The emotional toll of money issues. While most people have
experienced money worries at one time or another, the science
surrounding this phenomenon is compelling. Duke University’s
Personal Assistance Service cites an American Psychological
Association survey asserting that 80% of Americans experience
genuine stress related to money, and that half of Americans worry
about their ability to provide for their family. While money is
always an uncertain and fluid factor in our lives, how we deal with
these stresses may be strengthened through early experiences and
developing good emotional habits.
Education Needed. Of course, money is far more than an emotional issue; being comfortable with a topic doesn’t guarantee proficiency, it
merely makes it easier to learn. There are a number of online sources for financial education, helpful to both teens and young adults. The Ad Council and the
American Institute of Certified Public Accountants have a national campaign,
Feed the Pig™, to try and correct this dilemma, www.feedthepig.org, and The
National Council on Economic Education has also helped launch
www.TheMint.org to acquaint young adults with vital financial principles.

2 cups grape tomatoes
1 cup thinly sliced green onions
½ tsp. coarse salt

1 small garlic clove, minced

1 cup (4 oz.) shredded sharp Cheddar
cheese
6 hickory-smoked bacon slices, cooked

1 Tbsp. chopped fresh thyme, divided

1. Preheat oven to 425°.
Heat oil in a 10-inch
ovenproof nonstick skillet over medium-high
heat. Add tomatoes and

the baggage that skews one’s ability to communicate with another person. The only
way to unload baggage is through taking Biblical steps of forgiveness. Any Biblical
counselor will point a couple to the Word of God for principles, that when applied,
will lead one to forgive people in the past or present.
Marriage counseling helps couples with communication. Many a couple
has said, “We are just so different!” No wonder! God made a man (Adam)
and a woman (Eve) with obvious physical, emotional, hormonal and mental differences. Then add to the mix that no two people have the same personality.
Further, people have different backgrounds which can affect how they relate to others. These “differences” most view as obstacles. Counseling can give perspective of
how God blends these “differences.” In addition counseling teaches each partner
communication techniques such as empathy, listening skills, and how to speak the
truth in love.
A couple who knows how to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, continues to forgive, and learns to communicate, will have a blessed marriage. Pre-marital or
marriage counseling can help a couple experience God’s intended union.

Testosterone’s Role in a Woman’s
Over-All Well-Being
Testosterone is a hormone most associated with body-builders, elite athletes, and
the manliest of men. It also plays a big factor in the over-all well-being of women.
Testosterone is a hormone that is emitted from the ovaries and the adrenal glands.
The levels of testosterone increases during our younger years and in pregnancy
and decreases as we get older and enter into menopause. A
sudden drop in testosterone can affect a women’s sexual
health and cause her to have a decrease in libido, energy levels, and mood.
Signs of Low Testosterone in Women
Fatigue: Do you feel drained? Tired? Are the physical activities that once invigorated you, leaving you exhausted? If you
find yourself answering yes to any of these and you know you
are getting the appropriate amount of sleep, a testosterone
deficiency may be to blame. Certainly, other conditions cause
fatigue so it is important to talk with your doctor.
Weight Gain: Diminishing testosterone levels are one of the leading causes of
midlife weight gain accompanied by loss of muscle tone and bone density. Generally
these symptoms begin to manifest in the mid-30s.
Decreased Libido: It’s normal to become less sexually active as we get older.
However, when testosterone levels are low in women, more extreme sexual changes
tend to occur. Vaginal dryness can make intercourse quite painful which in turn
causes a loss of interest in sexual intimacy.

Depression: Many emotional symptoms can be caused by low testosterone levels.
Depression, mood swings, etc., occur because testosterone helps stabilize energy levels and libido. Other symptoms include a lack of motivation to participate in the
activities you may have once enjoyed doing.
Osteoporosis: Testosterone plays an important role in bone production.
Osteoporosis and its symptoms develop gradually over time. Women with osteoporosis are more susceptible to bone breaks and fractures and, for older women, this
could lead to severe complications. There are many treatment options for osteoporosis including bone density tests and medications.
Other signs of low testosterone are irregular periods, anxiety, and hair loss. If you are
experiencing any of these symptoms, it could be due to low testosterone. You are not
alone. Many women have been treated for low testosterone with positive results.
Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your symptoms so that he or she
can begin to determine if the cause is due to low levels of testosterone.

While ample time and planning goes into vacations,
people tend to leave one essential “to-do” off their list:
