May 2015 Mark III: Worship - Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
This month we continue our 7-month series
looking at the 7 Marks of the Church (as detailed in Luther’s 1539 essay entitled “On the
Councils and the Church”).

We can’t save ourselves but we can respond
with love and thanksgiving to the one who
has loved us and saved us. We can pray and
sing songs and lift up thanksgiving to God.
We can gather to hear God’s word taught
and together pray the Lord’s Prayer. As we
linger around the truths taught in the catechism we become more deeply rooted in the
saving goodness of the gospel.
Worship
Ministry
We should not be in the habit of forgoing
worship but gathering regularly to be encouraged and to encourage others in their faith.
Jesus promises to be especially present when
we gather with others in his name. Let us
continue to gather. Let us invite others into
the joy and comfort we find in worship.
Luther writes in the above mentioned essay:
“…the holy Christian people are externally recognized by prayer, public praise, and thanksgiving to God. Where you see and hear the
Lord’s Prayer prayed and taught; or psalms or
other spiritual songs sung, in accordance with
the word of God and the true faith; also the
creed, the Ten Commandments, and the catechism used in public, you may rest assured
that a holy Christian people of God are present.”
Worship isn’t the work of a few. The worship
word “liturgy” literally conveys “work of the
people”. Sometimes worship is chore. That’s
okay. I believe that we are to come to worship primarily for God’s sake—to offer God
prayer, praise and thanksgiving. Sometimes
we come and we get to be a blessing to
others and encourage them in their faith—
thanks be to God. Sometimes we come and
there is something specifically for us from
God—what a blessing! But regardless of who
is getting what out of worship God bids us to
come.

Mark III:
Worship
We aren’t able to earn or merit right standing
with God. We aren’t even able to believe in
God without the work of the Holy Spirit. On our
own we can’t enter into the fullest and richest
life for which we were intended by God. We
need community with each other and we
need community with God. God has restored
us to right standing through Jesus’ life, death
and glorious resurrection. God has clearly
shown that we are called to be saved and to
live an abundant life opened to us through the
empty tomb.
If we are truly a church that serves God and
experiences God’s saving love then worship
must be one of our defining marks.
Peace and blessings as we continue to gather to worship, Pastor

A Return of Home Visits ?!?
There has been discussion about reviving the practice
of home communion visits. People who are unable to
regularly get to worship to receive the sacrament of
Holy Communion would be visited on a monthly basis
to receive that tangible expression of the gospel. We
need to assemble two lists in order to see if this hope
can become a reality:

Thanks for all the helpers and all who came
and enjoyed the food at our Easter breakfast.
Looking forward to doing it all again next year!
Thanks to Tuesday Crew and Jeani for all their
extra scrubbing they did to make the church
“shine” on Easter Sunday.
Thank you to Anne Clemens for all your coordination, arranging and watering of the Easter
Lilies.
1.
We need a list of persons or couples who would
be willing to commit to monthly visiting one of our
homebound members to bring communion to them,
pray with them and enter into that holy space of Jesus
coming into the midst of two or three gathered in his
name.
Thanks to Ralph Sherman for coming down
and cleaning our front walk before Easter.
2. We need a list of persons who would like to have
a monthly communion visit. If you would like to find
out more about being a home communion visitor
please contact Pastor Karl. You can get your questions
answered and, if you would like, go on a ride-along to
see exactly what is involved. You will be blessed if you
venture into this holy territory.
Thanks to all those who helped make Wanda
Wendt’s 80th birthday celebration such a wonderful day, and thanks to all who came too.
Thanks to all those behind the scenes workers
that tend to our church, the altar, and all that
make CGSLC all that it is!
Thanks to all those who helped with Donna

Sunday,
March
22,
SHARON
KEMNITZ,
ILENE WHELDEN, ANNE CLEMENS, SANDY
ELIAS, ANNA CHRISTIE left the church after the
second service, stopping at DQ for a bite to eat,
then headed off to the Pentacle to the 2:00 matinee of Mel Brooks Musical, "Young Frankenstein".
They enjoyed the show and the great cast, including TYLER PALMBLAD. Well worth an afternoon.
The ladies loved it.
It was an enjoyable
weekend at the coast
for DON and PAT
WOLFE in commemoration of their 62nd wedding
anniversary celebrated March 21.
Six individuals were honored for
significant contributions to historical preservation in the mid-valley
by the Willamette Heritage Center.
The David Duniway Historian
Award was presented to GWEN CARR at the
ceremony held at the Mission Mill Museum.
Gwen, a curious person interested in history, researched the history of African-Americans in Oregon, preserving that information. Her work was on
exhibit, "Rails through Salem", at the World Beat
Gallery, focusing on the history of black people in
the history of Oregon.
A big THANK YOU to RALPH SHERMAN for
pressure washing the walk under the front canopy
prior to Easter. It looks amazing!
Daniel "Deke" Kniss, of LaGrande,
was a recent visitor in Salem to celebrate his mother's birthday. He, and
his mother, MARY ANN KNISS, went
out to dinner and had a good visit. Dan

in
La
Grande.
Remember....he was an original Scout, with his
mother, when Troop 9 was established in 1987
under the sponsorship of Christ Lutheran Church.
Congratulations to PHILIP and
PENNY CULP on the birth of their
grandson. Logan Wayne Hunter,
born at 10:05 a.m. March 17, 8 lb.
6.5 oz, 21 inches in length. Lo4
gan's parents, Sara Culp and Greg Hunter, and big
brother Jude, are bonding at home.
Have you taken a close look at the Prayer Box at
the front of the sanctuary? Beautiful craftsmanship by DEAN
HATZENBIHLER, placed in the
sanctuary March 24. Crafted from
wood cut from pews to accommodate a walker or a wheelchair.
The Prayer Box is made to accommodate prayer candles set in sand, with baskets at each end of the sandbox for candles and
prayer cards.
Recognition was given MATTHEW PALMQUIST,
park interpreter at Silver Falls State Park, in the
Statesman Journal (March 23)
for his work which was featured
in the photo of wildflowers in
bloom in that issue of the newspaper. He encourages people to
visit locations where there are a
variety of wildflowers in bloom.
JACK JOHNSON and son Jared Johnson, of Redmond, went to Grover Beach in the Morrow Bay
area of California to visit
Jack's daughter Kim.
Jack and Jared drove
through the big Redwood
Forest and drove the Prius through one of the big
trees. The also did some
Pier fishing while there.
They had a great time and good visit.
Enjoying their grandson for a weekend, CHUCK
and SARA PALMQUIST, had a bonding good time
with six month old Owen.
WANDA WENDT's 80th birthday celebration April
11 drew a full house in the Gathering Room as she
circulated greeting all comers. The occasion drew
relatives and friends from far and wide. Wanda was
surrounded by her children and grandchildren;
Debbie Wendt, Gene and Connie
Wendt, Denise Wendt, JAY and NORI
CASH and their children, PATRICK, IAN
and EMMA who planned the event for
their mother and mother-in-law. Daughter Nori revealed a BIG surprise. After a
conversation with the Mayor of Turner, with consent of the City Council, Wanda may be selected
the Grand Marshall of the Turner Lamb Festival
parade and festivities in honor of her many years
as a resident, raising her family in the city, and for
her services to her community, i.e. served on the
city council, active in the historical society, etc.
It was good to see former members Jon and Theresa Peterson Sunday
April 19. After a birthday visit with daughter Kelly in Seattle,
they made a stop at
Christ
the
Good
Shepherd on their
way home to Medford. Friends were
happy to see and visit
with them.

Many Thanks to you!
The congregation would like to express it’s gratitude to
Eleanore Norman for her gift of the beautifully embroidered
communion cloths she created for our church. We appreciate you for your talents and generosity.
The Winner of the Great Race is…
Well, the Great Race is over and everyone ran a great
race! Who won, you ask? I believe the answer is
everyone., but I’ll let you decide.
I hope everyone was as blessed by the drama that was
presented on April 12 as I was. I was so happy to get
such a great group of actors to work with: Twila
Anderson, Paul Anderson, Jason Elms, Stephanie and
Tyler Palmblad and Matthew Biggs. All of these people brought their own spin on this drama and I had the
pleasure of watching their characters bloom.
I first came across this play over 10 years ago when I
had the pleasure of playing the part of “Sarah”. The
playwright was a part of our congregation and had
written this wonderful play and asked me to be a part
of it. That is really where my love for drama began.
After being a part of this play I was able to be a part of
many more of hers. So when I hear that this congregation used to do plays I was thrilled!!! Another way to
bring the good news in an artistic way.
This was my first attempt at directing a play. I have
been on stage but never been ‘behind the camera’ per
say. This experience was all worth it.
Jason gave this wonderful quote: “The thing I like and
get the most out of with any activity at church is
getting to know more of the church family. I appreciate spending time with people I already know but
enjoy getting to know others who I do not know as
well.”
This year’s chosen family for our Habitat for Humanity Faith
Build is the Logvynenko family. Sergiy is working in technology with expertise in computers and Yelena, currently a
stay-at-home mom, was trained as a Medical Assistant at
Chemeketa Community College. This hard-working couple is
continuously coping with sub-standard conditions in their
small apartment from removing carpeting due to flea infestation from former tenants, coping with heating problems,
and dealing with mold and moisture issues. Together, their
prayers have focused on the goal of owning a home that
allows their children to play safely and where they can grow
vegetables and flowers and be members of a community.
I concur with him. Whenever we have a small group
of people come together for any reason you get to
learn more about them. I have to say that I loved this
group of people and would gladly work with them
again. They pulled out all the stops to bring this drama
to life and praise God while doing that. Dramas speak
to people in a way that no other medium can. I am
grateful that I could praise both God and our wonderful church volunteers through this drama. I hopeful
that we will do more dramas in the near future!
Well, do you agree who won? I hope you do agree that
we are all winners of the Great Race.

Pastor Karl is seeking some folks who would like to

seasonal themes. This group would meet 3 or 4
times a year to discuss, pray, suggest and evaluate.

process please contact Pastor Karl. Thank you.
