I am proud to be serving you as your summer 4-H Summer
Assistant. I am so thrilled to be able to meet many of you this
summer and help out with all of the summer 4-H projects! So you get
to know me a bit better, I would like to share a few tidbits about
myself. As a senior at the University of Wisconsin- River Falls, I am
an agricultural education major. After I student teach in the fall of
2014, I hope to be an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor in a
Wisconsin school district or an extension agent working with youth
development in Wisconsin. I love landscaping and creating floral
designs as hobbies, and plan to also own and operate my own floral
shop in the future.
Native to Northeastern, Wisconsin, I am originally from
Winneconne, Wisconsin. Growing up, I and my family of eight lived
on a 60 cow dairy farm. For thirteen years I was a member of the
Westward 4-H Club in Winnebago County, and did everything the
4-H could offer me! From sewing and family living to vegetables and
rabbits and traveling to serving as an officer, me and my family were
apart of just about every project and event in 4-H. Because my
siblings and I were highly active in both FFA and 4-H, we were able
to show dairy at the county fair. Though county fair is one of my
favorite experiences as a 4-H member, some of my other favorite 4-H
memories include traveling to Colorado, Kansas, Ohio, and Montana
through our county 4-H interstate exchange program and the many
summers spent at Upham Woods at 4-H camp.
This summer is going to be jam packed with so much
excitement, I can’t wait to start! As you’re out and about at 4-H
events this summer, feel free to stop by and introduce yourself. I can’t
wait to meet you all and see all the great things that St. Croix County
has to offer. See you this summer!
Congratulations
High School Graduates
Congratulations to all the High School Graduates

Congratulations to Kaitlin Konder and Austin

calf mean to your 4-H experience?” Members
submitted their essays as well as their breed
preference and to list their involvement in 4-H and
dairy project activities.

COOL for Youth Exhibitors
Country of Origin Labeling
Basic premise of COOL: this is a government
USDA rule that provides consumers with information
of where their food originated. This is a rule that the
livestock, and other food industries have wanted for
years. It is another step to protect the American food
supply, and give choices to consumers.

Biosecurity and Your Pig Project
Even if it’s only one horse or one chicken, 4-H
members who raise and show livestock are subject to
the rules about “premise registration.” The Wisconsin
Premises Registration Act requires anyone who keeps,
houses, or co-mingles livestock to register their
premises effective November 1, 2005. Those premises
currently licensed by the Department must register as
part of their annual license renewal date.
Premises registration is not aimed solely at traditional
large scale agriculture. A premise may house many
animals or a single animal. It doesn’t matter if the
animals are for sale or not. If they house any of the
listed species they are included:
Livestock as defined by the WI Premises Registration
Act Rules includes:
Bovine (bison, cattle)
Equine (horses, donkey, mules)
Goats
Poultry (chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, guinea
fowl, and squab
Captive game birds (pheasants, quail, wild
turkeys, migratory wild fowl, pigeons, and exotic
birds)
Sheep
Swine (other than wild hogs but including pot
belly pigs)
Farm raised deer (elk, moose, caribou, reindeer,
and the subfamily musk deer)
Camelids (llamas, alpacas)
Whether you are caring for a single hog or thousands
you are part of the pork industry. A healthy swine
herd starts with raising healthy pigs at home.
Biosecurity means reducing the chances of an
infectious disease being carried onto your farm by
people, animals, equipment or vehicles.
Developing and following a biosecurity plan is the
best way to prevent and control the spread of swine
diseases! To prevent the spread of diseases, you need
to understand how diseases can infect your pig.
For more information about biosecurity and to have a
biosecurity booklet e-mailed to you, contact Melissa
at [email protected].

Attention All Archers!!!! Chilakoot Bowhunters will
be having it's 60th Anniversary Celebration on June
8& 9th, 2013. There will be a youth range for kids
who want to learn how to shoot a bow--and a very
large 3D tournament. We will be giving away 2
youth bows per day to kids who shoot at our youth
range and A1-Archery is donating 2 Mathews bows
to two lucky archers who shoot the 3D course. Check
out the website for more information regarding our
exciting celebration weekend! We hope to see you
there!

Dairyland Youth Celebration

Department 17 is Exploring and Cloverbuds. Within
each Department, there are classes. Within each
Class, there are Lot numbers. The Lot Number is a
specific entry within a class.
August 3, 2013; 2:00 pm
Wisconsin State Fair Park Coliseum
Dairyland Youth Celebration celebrates the
achievements of Wisconsin State Fair junior dairy
exhibitors. The event, presented by the Wisconsin
State Fair Dairy Promotion Board, provides an
exciting conclusion to one of the largest and most
competitive junior dairy shows in the world. Close to
100 dairy youth are recognized during the event, and
over the past five years, dairy youth supporters have
raised close to $60,000 for dairy youth and dairyyouth programs in the state.
Departments which are conference judged (almost all
of the non-livestock departments), the Lot Number
simply says “Exhibit made by Member”. The beauty
of conference judging is that we don’t need to know
what you are going to bring, only how many items
you will bring. If you are going to bring 3 exhibits,
simply write:
Lot 1—Exhibit made by member
Lot 2—Exhibit made by member
Lot 3—Exhibit made by member

volunteering at the fair. We will need help with fair
clean up on July 10, 2013 and monitoring buildings
during the fair on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday. Enclosed is a copy of the Building Monitor
Schedule so your club will know when it is scheduled
to help. We rotate the club time slots for monitoring
the buildings so that the same clubs don’t get “stuck”
with closing all the time.
The entry form can be found at the end of this
newsletter.

groups in St. Croix County are invited to participate
in the Promote the Fair Contest. Signs promoting the

location in the County. Be sure to get property
owners permission! This is an opportunity for major
Community Service as well as an outlet to display
creative talents!
NEEDED: We have some open shifts as building
monitors, so if your club could take an extra spot,
that would be great! Contact Melissa at the
Extension Office to register.

that have never attended the St. Croix County Fair?
Do you have neighbors that don’t even know about
4-H or the County Fair? Why not make a special
effort to stop, visit about 4-H and the fair and invite

people exposed to the wonderful fair we have. Please
do invite your neighbors to join us July 17 - 21 at the
