Studying in Canada
Welcome to Canada
Canada, with its ten provinces, three territories and six
time zones, is the second largest country in the world. It
stretches over 7,000 kilometres from coast to coast.
Canada has two official languages, English
and French.
The United Nations has repeatedly named Canada one of
the 10 best countries in the world in which to live. This is
based on the following:
• the accessibility and excellence of Canada’s
education and health care systems
• the respect for human rights and dignity
• the low incidence of crime
• the country’s clean environment
Canada is proud of its multicultural character and has
both a tradition and a policy of encouraging cultural
diversity. Multiculturalism is enshrined in the Canadian
Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This openness means

Studying in Canada
Studying in Canada makes financial sense. The cost of
education and living is reasonable when compared
to many other countries, and the quality of education
is outstanding. Moreover, degrees and diplomas
from Canadian postsecondary institutions are widely
recognized and respected for the high level of education

Working in Canada*
International students can work off campus after
six months of full-time studies. They can also work
in Canada for up to three years after graduating by
securing a postgraduate work permit. Canadian work
experience is highly sought after by multinational
companies that actively recruit on Canadian campuses.

Immigration requirements*

Unless you are a Canadian citizen or a permanent
resident of Canada, you must have a valid study
permit to live and study in Canada. However,
Canadian immigration laws currently require that
you make the initial application from outside
Canada. To apply for a study permit, you can
either apply online (after you have verified your
eligibility) or you must go to a Canadian embassy,
pay the required fees and provide the following
documents:
• original offer of admission (letter of
acceptance) from the University of Ottawa
• proof of sufficient funds or a reliable source
of sufficient funds to cover the cost of
tuition and living expenses for one year
(approximately C$26,000–C$30,000)
• a valid passport and two recent passportsize photos
• payment of the application fee (C$125 or
equivalent in your country’s currency)
• medical examination (if required)
• police certificate (if required)
• completed application form
Other documents may be required, and
depending on your country of origin, you may
also need a Temporary Resident Visa (an “Entry
Visa”) to enter Canada (to determine if you need

Every year the University welcomes more than 3,000 international students and faculty from nearly
150 countries. This multicultural environment ensures that your experience at Canada’s university will be

The International Office offers you advice, information
and activities to help you fit into the University
community. Our staff plans activities throughout the
year. Take the opportunity to visit Ottawa, Montreal or
Toronto, skate on the Rideau Canal, go to a football or
hockey game, or learn to ski. The options are endless.
Our Facebook group, uOttawa Bureau International
Office, is a great way for all our international students
to connect and stay up to date on activities and events

International House, a service run by the Student
Federation of the University of Ottawa, also organizes
cultural and social events that bring together students

The Integration Program was created in order to provide international students like you with the best possible
experience and help you gain valuable academic skills, master uOttawa’s languages of instruction, acquire greater
intercultural competences, receive academic and professional guidance, benefit from opportunities for networking
and socializing as well as participate actively in the Canadian experience.
The International Students Success Centre is an important service available to help ease the transition from
life in your home country to life in Canada. International student mentors are available to answer your questions
about Canadian culture, academic life, learning strategies and any challenges you may face during your time
here at university. The mandate of the Success Centre is to support you from the time you submit your admission

Apartment-style residences
If apartment life appeals to you, then the Brooks and Hyman
Soloway residences are for you. The furnished units in these
buildings accommodate two, three or four people. Each
apartment boasts a private bedroom for each resident, a
complete kitchen, a dining area, a living room and one or two
bathrooms, cable and Wi-Fi included. Laundry facilities are
available in all residences! These units are assigned for a oneyear period, running from September to August, but can be
sublet in the summer. This type of arrangement gives you the
option of renewing your contract each year and keeping your
room for the whole time you are a student at uOttawa.
On-campus housing
On campus housing is reserved mainly for undergraduate
students. Different types of residences are available on
campus, from furnished rooms with shared bathrooms,
showers, lounges and kitchens to furnished and
unfurnished apartment units with two, three or four
bedrooms. If you want to apply for on-campus housing,
you must indicated on your undergraduate application
that you are interested in housing and have received an
offer of admission before May 19th, 2014.

Looking for a true “rez” experience? Then one of our traditional
residences is for you! This is where you’ll develop some great
friendships! Traditional residences offer single or double rooms
and common areas on the floors, such as bathrooms, kitchens,
study rooms and laundry facilities. All the residence rooms are
furnished (you just need to bring your linen, blankets and towels)
and common areas are cleaned daily. Traditional residences
accommodate first-year students from September to April.
LeBlanc
This residence is for French-speaking students as well as Englishspeaking students who would like to improve their French.
LeBlanc is the smallest residence on campus, making it a warm
and friendly environment—you’ll know everyone by their first
name in no time! LeBlanc has two floors reserved for female
students and another reserved for male students, but all common
areas are co-ed. This well-designed residence makes students
feel like they are part of a community, while ensuring individual
privacy. And no matter where you are in LeBlanc, there are many
windows to let in lots of natural light.
Marchand
If you are looking for “rez” life with an international flavour,
then this residence is for you! Many exchange students from all
over the world call the co-ed Marchand residence home while
they’re here. Throughout the year, residence community advisers
organize a variety of international themed activities. Connected
to the 90 University (90U) and Stanton residences, this 15-storey
residence overlooks the Rideau Canal.
Stanton and Thompson
These two co-ed residences are quite similar—they were both
designed to help create a strong sense of community. If you like
making new friends, then staying here will be paradise for you!
The 15-storey Stanton residence overlooks the Rideau Canal
and is part of the large 90U residential complex. Thompson,
on the other hand, has 20 stories and is just steps from the
Morisset Library.

STUDY IN ENGLISH OR IN FRENCH
Many programs are offered in both of Canada’s official languages. You can study in English, French or both, including
taking undergraduate French immersion courses to improve your French. This gives you the advantage of a flexible
degree program combining majors and minors (see p.22 for a definition of a Major and a Minor) in different disciplines
that will be recognized and valued worldwide, in both English- and French-speaking settings. The University of Ottawa is
also one of the rare universities to offer such diverse and rich graduate programs in both of these languages.

Admission scholarships
At the University of Ottawa, each faculty has a scholarship budget
for international students. Each faculty holds its own competition
with its own criteria; scholarships are awarded until funds are
depleted, in accordance with the faculty’s priorities. An admission
average, calculated by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral
Studies, of 8.0/10 is required.
For master’s programs, your file must be recommended to the FGPS
by the faculty you have applied to. For doctorate programs, you are
automatically considered, and there is no need to fill out a form.
The programs for which you are eligible for an international
scholarship are the same as those for which Canadian students
are eligible for an admission scholarship. You must be registered
full-time in order to qualify for these scholarships. Students who
want to study in a graduate diploma program or in a professional
master’s program are not eligible.
FULL SCHOLARSHIP
For a master’s, this scholarship includes $15,000 from the Faculty
of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and a minimum of $7,500
from the academic unit or the thesis supervisor. These amounts are
$18,000 and $9,000, respectively, for a doctorate.
PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP
For a master’s, this scholarship includes $7,500 from the Faculty
of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and a minimum of $7,500
from the academic unit or the thesis supervisor. These amounts are
$9,000 and $9,000, respectively, for a doctorate.
This is a guaranteed minimum funding; a large number of our
students receive more.
SCHOLARSHIP DURATION
Admission scholarships are good for four years for a PhD, two years
for a master’s with thesis and one year for a master’s with research
paper.
The University of Ottawa also has agreements with various
countries and offers scholarships that partly or completely cover
international tuition fees.

Work-Study Program
Are you considering a part-time job? You may not have to look very far,
because our campus offers many job opportunities for students.
Work experience – Last year, more than 1,600 positions were
available across all faculties and services. The jobs vary from one
department to the next. In many cases, participants find a position in
their chosen field. Most positions require the ability to work in English
and French.
Money – During the regular academic year (September to April), you
can work part time and earn $3,000 - sometimes more - while you are
studying! During the summer session, you can work full time and earn
around $6,000 over 18 weeks (for undergraduate students).
External scholarships

The Ontario Trillium Scholarship program aims to help the
best doctoral students from around the world to study in
Ontario. Each Ontario Trillium Scholarship is worth $40,000
annually, renewable for a maximum of four years.

Do I qualify?
General requirements
You need to have completed your secondary school program
(at least 12 years of education under the Ontario system) to be
admissible to the University of Ottawa. You must prove that you
have completed university preparatory courses in senior secondary
school. You must also have completed some university studies to be
considered for admission to most professional programs.
Most undergraduate programs require an admission average
between B+ and A (75% to 85% by Canadian standards) or above,
depending on the type of program and enrolment limits.

The duration of an undergraduate degree is normally four years.
To be eligible for an undergraduate degree at the University
of Ottawa, all students must complete at least 60 credits at
the University (two years of full-time studies) from a total of
120 credits, regardless of the number of credits transferred.
Official transcripts for courses taken at a university are required
for advanced standing (affidavits are not accepted).
Applicants from recognized universities and colleges can
transfer into the first, second or third year of an undergraduate
program. In order for the University to assess a request for
transfer of credits, you must provide official course descriptions
(in English or in French) for all studies conducted outside

Do I qualify?

Admission to graduate studies is competitive. Generally, in order
to be admissible to a master’s program, you must have an honours
degree (at least four years of university studies) with a minimum
average of B, or the equivalent (70% in the Canadian education
system). The admission average is calculated from the applicant’s
previous 20 courses (60 credits).
For a PhD, a master’s degree in the discipline with a minimum
average of B+ (75% in the Canadian education system) or the
equivalent is required. The admission average is calculated from
the applicant’s previous 10 courses (30 credits).

Minor
Minors provide introductory-level training in a branch or a
sub-branch of a discipline or subject.
Joint honours
Joint honours degrees allow specialization in two related fields
or disciplines. As a result, they involve a large number of
compulsory courses in each discipline and few electives.
Integrated programs
A program in which the requirements of two separate bachelor’s
degrees are completed, thus leading to two separate diplomas.
French Immersion Studies
This is an academic stream, offered in certain honours bachelor’s
programs, where a specific number of courses must be taken
in French.
We offer a variety of resources, some casual and some are formal, to
ensure success in your bilingual studies.
In Canada, university undergraduate studies lead to a bachelor’s
degree whereas graduate studies lead to a master’s or
doctoral degree.

The University of Ottawa confers
four types of bachelor’s degrees:
General bachelor’s degree
The general bachelor’s degree provides a basic university education.
Honours bachelor’s degree
This degree requires the equivalent of four years of studies and
at least 120 credits completed with the required graduation
grade-point average (GGPA).
You can easily pursue studies in two disciplines by combining
programs with specializations, majors and minors, and have access
to graduate studies in these disciplines.
Specialization
Specializations require training in a single discipline or in an
interdisciplinary area.
Major
Majors involve training in two main disciplines or areas, that is
two majors or one major and a minor.
Professional bachelor’s degree
This degree, for the most part, provides training that meets the
requirements of professional associations or colleges (medicine,
law, engineering, education, etc.). All of the programs contain a
large proportion of discipline-specific courses. Length of studies
varies by discipline (one year for Education, three years for Law,
and four years for Engineering, Music, Visual Arts, Commerce and
Medicine). Professional degrees in Law, Medicine and Education
all require preliminary university studies.
Certificate
An undergraduate certificate diploma, conferred by the Senate of
the University, confirms the successful completion of 30 university
credits. Certificates are offered at the graduate level as well.
Schedule and credits
At the undergraduate level, the academic year is divided into two
15-week sessions (Fall and Winter). Many courses are also offered
during the Spring/Summer sessions. At the graduate level, the
academic year consists of three compulsory sessions. Normally,
a full-time undergraduate student registers for five courses in a
session (three courses for graduate students). Most courses require
three hours of class time per week and are worth three credits.

Workload
Although in class time, per week, takes up only about 3 hours
per course, you must devote at least two hours of individual
study or group work for each hour spent in class. Courses
are interactive and require preparation — especially reading.
Discussion groups, team projects and laboratories also add to
course hours.
Grades and exams
Most courses include research papers or lab reports and exams.
Other assignments depend on the nature of the course. Grades
are given in percentages and then are converted into letter
grades at the end of the session. For example, a grade above
90% corresponds to an A+.

An honours bachelor’s degree or a professional bachelor’s
degree allows advanced studies and is normally required for
admission to graduate studies.
