aside £2,600 for this
purpose;
applications for grant aid

local community. In recognising the important
work of the voluntary sector at a local level,
Cirencester Town Council will also be setting
aside a total of £12,300 to be shared between
Cotswold Counselling, Citizens Advice and
Cotswold Volunteers and £3,500 for

About Town - Spring 2015
Plans are coming together around the
Hare Festival Way – the legacy of the
Cirencester March Hare Festival 2014.
We are thrilled with the number of
diverse groups and individuals who
are getting involved in this project as it
gathers pace. The Park Community Group,
for example, have developed an action plan
to work with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust
(GWT), Cirencester Town Council, Phoenix
Gardeners, Deer Park School, the Farming
and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG), the
Probation Service and others to make the
walk from Gloucester Street to Thomas
Street a more pleasant and wildlife friendly
walk. Bird and bat boxes built by Cirencester
residents during GWT’s Brighter Futures
courses have now been erected by the
allotments next to the millpond.
Around Beeches Road and the land adjacent
to City Bank, volunteers from GWT, Brighter
Futures, FWAG and the Friends of City Bank
have all been involved in various activities.
Local blacksmith-artist Ben Prothero is
producing a hare-themed centrepiece for the
empty pub sign by the bridge, and will be
installed shortly. Cirencester Town Council
and GWT have also undertaken a lot of work
in the Old Nursery Site, improving this wildlife
habitat with groups of local volunteers – the
lifeblood of this project.
Later this year look out for the return of
wonderful decorated hares to Cirencester,
specifically along the route of the Hare
Festival Way. There are also plenty of
opportunities to involve more schools
and groups to create and enhance wildlife
habitats for the town, and increase awareness
of Cirencester’s magnificent natural and
The Estates Team have carried out
a number of improvements across
the town these last few months in
addition to their maintenance duties.
This includes
• Repairs to the banks of the Abbey lake damaged by last years flooding
• The start of a tree pruning programme
at the Church entrance to the Abbey Grounds to make a more welcoming entrance
• Soft landscaping to Thistle park
• Improvements to the Obelisk area of the Amphitheatre, new entrances
(see photos), fencing and replacement
of a hedge at the old Nursery City Bank

historical heritage. Many thanks are due to
CCDT, Cirencester Town Council and many
others for their drive and support, and
particularly to the residents of Cirencester for
rolling up their sleeves and embracing this
project so enthusiastically.

All of these projects and our plans for
further improvements to these and other
areas would not have
been possible without
the support of the
Friends, Community
Groups and volunteers
who have been involved.

We’re looking to re-establish a Youth Town Council
in Cirencester and are on the hunt for engaging young
people aged 11-18 to help us.
Saturday 23 May until Saturday 3 October, 2015
(open alternate Saturdays 10 to 2)
And 8th to 12th Sept 10 to 4 for Heritage Open Days
Admission free - [email protected]
This exhibition shows portraits of local people over 200
years, from an early engraving of Earl Bathurst to a
portrait of local magistrate W I Crome.
The exhibition will focus on a rare collection of early
photographs, from the 1860s of local people, from shopkeepers
to businessmen and servants. Who were they and why were
their photographs taken? The exhibition will also explore how
photographs were made in pre-digital age when many families
may have only owned one or two
pictures of themselves.
We need your help. As a taster for the
exhibition there will be a small display
of the photographs in the foyer of the
Town Council Offices (opposite the
Local Information Centre).
This is from 13 April to 14 May.
We are hoping local people might
be able to help identify some of the
people it has been difficult to find
out more about. Included in these
are the Beeches servants from the
1880s and members of the Boulton,
Townsend and Brindle families.
The photograph from the exhibition
shown here is of Dr Adamson and
his family in about 1865 whose
surgery was in Dollar Street. The
doctor is crouching to hold his
daughter still for the few minutes
it took the photographer to take
the picture.

In previous years the Youth Town Council
helped design and set up a Youth Project
called ‘Ozone’ which runs at the Impact
Centre on Lewis Lane every Tuesday
7-9pm during school term time.
Youth Town Council members were also the
driving force behind the successful Phoenix
Festival (www.phoenix-festival.co.uk) and raised
over £40,000 to make the event happen.
Other projects have included the graffiti art
on Kingshill Bridge, an art project with New
Brewery Arts and more.
If you know a young person aged 11-18 who
might fancy doing something fun, interesting
and rewarding, then tell them about Youth
Town Council!
