Public Speaking – At CIS It’s a Basic Skill I ran this article last year and believe it is important enough to do so again this year. Over the past year, I have watched our students in several different venues as they led assemblies, spoke at receptions, performed in a variety of skits, presented their work to an audience and performed in debates and in the most recent musical. It has been truly delightful to see students perform and present with confidence, poise and grace. One of the things we value at CIS is providing many opportunities for students to develop their public speaking and performance skills. We believe that the ability to speak and perform for an audience is a basic skill that is important both in and out of a school setting. We are proud of the fact that we offer students a variety of assignments and opportunities to talk in front of others and to grow in confidence. We are not only committed to developing students’ writing, reading, mathematics and analytical skills, but also their speaking and presentation skills. Whether the venue is the Friday Elementary School assembly, a Monday morning skit, or the High School students presenting their Theory of Knowledge (TOK) assignments, we believe that such opportunities are essential to developing a well-educated global citizen. turn to page 2 CIS Newsflash Page 2 of 8 Superintendent’s News from page 1 Your Teen, the Tech Teacher You may know how to access a YouTube video, but chances are, your teen is more technologically savvy. So swap roles— have her teach you some tech tricks. Your teen will get a chance to be an expert, and if she isn’t sure of the details of an app or program, she’ll have to learn them to teach it to you. You’ll get to interact with your teen in a positive new way. Source: “Helping Students Learn, April 2015,The Parent Institute®, www.parent-institute.com Middle & High School News One of this week’s highlights for me was the Teacher Appreciation Day assembly that was organized by our Student Council on Tuesday. It had many thoughtful messages and performances from our students and parents to express their appreciation for the hardworking teachers at our school. Then I returned to my office to find a touching ‘Thank You’ message from several students on my desk. It was accompanied by some chocolate and an apple which I sat and ate while reading the messages and reflecting about what an amazing group of students we work with here at CIS and how proud I am of everyone who contributes to their education. Thank you. Also happening this week in Middle/High School has been our final round of MAP Elementary School News Hello All, With just 6 weeks left (27 school days), students and teachers are working hard beginning their final unit of inquiry for the year. It is hard to believe that we are approaching the end of the year; when I walk around to classrooms, the students and teachers are so actively engaged that it seems like they could go on forever! We will continue to share classroom learning through Facebook and through personal classroom communications. If you wish to learn more about the specifics of your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher. We will be working hard straight through to the last Wednesday and want to keep you informed of what happens in our classrooms. Grade 1s shared their learning this week related to the creation of trash and waste, how it affects the environment, recycling and what actions we can take as individuals and a school to shape our trash output. They conducted a trash investigation in school and invited Sir Ram to answer questions like: How much trash do we make in school? What happens to the trash collected in school? by: Mr. Neil Walton, MHS Principal testing for the school year. This will ultimately provide us with some good comparative data on the progress of our students through this year. When we get the results back you will be able to look at your child’s academic growth in the areas of Mathematics, Reading and Language Usage and allow us to analyze the effectiveness of our programs. Believe it or not, this week has been the last full week of classes for our Grade 12 students! Next week they will be on study leave from Thursday onwards since they will be beginning their final IB Diploma examinations in the first week of May. It is an extremely stressful time for them as they make their last preparations and focus years of studying on the goal of achieving their diplomas. We know that they have prepared well and we wish them all the best, but before that, we have a special occasion to mark the end of their formal classes at CIS. The Senior Farewell Assembly will be held in their honor on Wednesday, April 29 at 1:45 pm and I would like to invite you all to attend and help celebrate this milestone with them. The Grade 12 students and their parents are also invited to be our guests at a merienda after the assembly in the canteen annex. I hope to see you all there. Have a great weekend! by: Mr. Ted Mockrish, ES Principal They found out that we make more biodegradable trash compared to nonbiodegradable so they wrote a letter to Sir Ram asking him to make a composting site in school. After learning about the negative effects of trash and how long it takes for trash to decompose (5,000 years in a landfill for Styrofoam!), they wrote letters to Mr. Mockrish about reusing plates and cups instead of plastic and Styrofoam in the canteen. Today in assembly, they showed the videos that they made to help convince more people to reduce, reuse and recycle. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse! With April and May comes lice season in the tropics! Please be extra careful over the next 6 weeks and check your child’s scalp regularly for lice or nits. We have been “lucky” this year with only one reported case discovered and treated over the weekend, but it is important for us all to remain vigilant; lice are best eliminated when we work as a community to identify, treat and eliminate them all at once. Thank you for your collective support! A letter was sent home yesterday about the last book sale through Scholastic for the year. This is a great time to boost your home library in time for summer reading for your children. Please see the flier and letter about how to order. Our school basket will close next Thursday, April 30. Please make sure you place your orders by then. Please contact Ms. Kelly at [email protected] or Ms. Dunham at [email protected] for further information, or stop by the office for help! This Wednesday, April 29, we will hold our Senior Farewell Assembly at 1:45 pm. We expect that it will be completed by 2:30 pm in time for dismissal, but there may be a chance that your child maybe a bit late to dismissal. Clubs will run as per normal. This is a fun assembly where we say good bye as a school to our seniors and the last whole school event they will be at…other than their graduation! All are welcome! Thank you all and have a lovely event with friends and family. These students attend school in Pangan-an Island, a neighboring island that is 1.5k away. Since there is no High School campus in Caohagan, the students don’t have a choice but to swim to the neighboring island of Pangan-an Island to attend school. The Principal of Pangan-an Island personally received the boats in behalf of the Pangan-an High School PTA and Administration. A student said, sometimes they miss school because their parents cannot afford to give them money for banka fare. If it is low tide they walk across muddy mangrove areas, and if it is high tide, they have to swim. The boats that we donated will serve as their “sea bus” for going to school. CIS also donated toys, Yellow Boat of Hope bags, school supplies, books, sports equipment, shoes and clothes to the teachers and students of Caohagan Elementary School. These boats were donated and painted by students of Cebu International School during the Week Without Walls activity held last January 27-30, 2015. Definitely our students gave the students of Caohagan a new hope. ================================================================================================================ To all CIS Players (Including ISAC Volleyball and Soccer) For those who ordered a sports uniform, kindly pay for it at the cashier. CIS Newsflash Page 8 of 8 Other News Library News by Ms. Linda Odelson Read, read, then read some more, is what I tell students. That is especially true over the summer too. With that in mind, I wanted to let you know, if you are a returning family to CIS, you may check out books for the summer, ten books per person, including moms and dads. Reading over the summer in your home language or English is highly recommended. On the library home page is a link for family resources. You can search books by grade level, award winners, guys books and more. If you are going home for the summer, consider purchasing a few books for the NEW library. We will be creating mother tongue sections and your contributions and suggestions are needed and welcome. A HUGE thank you to Avril Davey and Amy Rudy. They have donated hours and hours to help transform the elementary library. I don’t know what I would do without them.
