News Items:
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that the number
of older adults in the US who die from fall-related injuries has nearly doubled since 2000. The CDC
found that about 30 in every 100,000 older adults died following a fall in the year 2000. By the year 2013,
about 57 in every 100,000 older adults died following a fall, nearly a 50 percent increase. Falls are often a
triggering event that signal larger health issues, such as balance issues, poor nutrition, or poorly controlled
diabetes that results in foot numbness. Researchers have found that the study highlights the importance of
coordinated fall-prevention efforts, such as home assessments and balance exercises.

Congress established the Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission in
2013 to provide the President and Congress with recommendations to modernize the military’s
compensation system. The Commission’s report validated many of the VFW’s beliefs that the government
does not appropriately compensate and care for the men and women of the armed forces. Most notably, the
Commission recognizes that the country has an obligation to better help all service members save for
retirement. Action: Members of Congress are considering whether to modernize the military
compensation system. The VFW needs you to contact your members of Congress and tell them to vote for
legislation that will enhance the current military compensation system by providing a 401(k)-type
retirement contribution to all service members.
